Neal Posted July 14, 2012 Author Posted July 14, 2012 Great link Neal Look forward to seeing your Tonka on one of those Andy Cheers Andy Got the paint tidied up around the UC bays, and painted the fuel tanks. Spent ages masking the thrust reverses then layering some silver under some gunmetal mixed with some blue, I've then sanded the centre of the reversers to bring through the sliver. The result is a bit disappointing as is barely noticeable. Dry brushed the exhausts, and fixed the wheels to the UC. Attached the pitot as I'd complete forgotten about and are bound to knock off at least a dozen times before the end. Time to get the klear on next. As the observant of you will have noticed I've taken the brave pill and split the canopy, it's come out pretty well if I say so myself.
paul_c Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 (edited) This looks great for such a small scale, brilliant work. Any idea what colours to use for his uniform? I'm assuming olive drab coverall, day glow vest, green bump cap and black ear defenders. You're correct with the green coveralls and yellow day glow, however RAF lineys very rarely wear bump hats (that's more a Navy-led Harrier and helicopter rule that us crabs sometimes have to adhere to) and his ear defenders from that era would be dark green overall. To tie in with the era, maybe a nice 80's/90's RAF 'tash? Edited July 15, 2012 by paul_c

I offered up the ladder to the cockpit yesterday and it's a bit big so that needs some adjustment, I may be being critical but it doesn't look that great up close, so I might have another go at it entirely if my patience can put up with fighting the 1mm rungs again.
Neal Posted July 22, 2012 Author Posted July 22, 2012 I fear another week has slipped by without any progress, after next week everything will be in a definate hold until September, thankfully I'm in no rush to complete this. Can you imagine how long it'd take me to make something big in 1:72 or 1:48!
nimrod54 Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 I fear another week has slipped by without any progress, after next week everything will be in a definate hold until September, thankfully I'm in no rush to complete this. Can you imagine how long it'd take me to make something big in 1:72 or 1:48! I wouldn't worry about the time it is taking Neal, it is coming along really well and I'm looking forward to seeing the figure painted up. I'm amazed at what you have achieved in such a short amount of time - it takes me much longer to make a model. It should be interesting when I take part in the F18 STGB next year - I will need to get plenty of practice in to try and speed up. Thought that this might interest you Link - I have ordered this for one of my builds which won't be started for a while yet.
Neal Posted July 22, 2012 Author Posted July 22, 2012 John, Thanks for the support. That's a great link, looks forward to seeing you using the parts. I recommend the retro kits clear LRMTS and cockpit set if you really want to go to town. I recon that I want to do 3 more Tornados; a gulf war pink GR1 (some JP233's would be ideal for that) a ETPS raspberry ripple scheme and a grey GR4. I think this is great little kit that's crying out for GR4 conversion set, FLIR, Brimstones, Paveway IV (or stormshadow) and some resin exhausts (the weakest part of the kit I think) I've not found time to do any actual modelling but I have been looking at some reference material and I noticed that the kit is missing the VHF blade antennas on the spine behind the cockpit and some probe sensors on the cockpit sides, I'll probably add those with some plasticard. I can't see that it's missing anything else, but does anyone know if the kit is missing any other lumps and bumps?
Neal Posted July 28, 2012 Author Posted July 28, 2012 Any opportunity for further progressed seems to have slipped by and the outlook doesnt look great, so all modelling is now on hold until mid september.
nimrod54 Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 Look forward to seeing you restart this in the autumn Neal. Have a good summer break.

Tornado Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Just want to press on a get this finished, but still a big list of minor jobs still to do, unlike this great 1:144 A-10 Link which is positively racing along by comparison. I've been looking for one of these for a while now and I finally found a reasonable one (in terms of cost and presentation) The tomcat looks ok, not as nice as the latest revell F-14D though, however the deck and accessories look great. So I think this chap is swapping sides and is going to become Tornado ground crew kneeling on a ladder checking out the cockpit. Any idea what colours to use for his uniform? I'm assuming olive drab coverall, day glow vest, green bump cap and black ear defenders. Seriously....! Come on, you panting that with an eyelash.?
Neal Posted August 25, 2012 Author Posted August 25, 2012 (edited) [seriously....! Come on, you panting that with an eyelash.? /quote] No it's all 1:32 and I made a massive 1p. Hopefully well be back up and running in a week or two and I'll have to actually paint him! Edited August 25, 2012 by Neal 1
Neal Posted September 21, 2012 Author Posted September 21, 2012 (edited) Hopefully I can dig this kit out over the weekend. There's a few tidy up jobs then it should be time for some klear ready for the decals. In the meantime I found this pic I took at the Coventry fly-in a couple of years ago. Its not a patch on some of the shots I've seen on BM, but one of the best I've ever managed. Must do a 1:144 grey GR4 Edited September 21, 2012 by Neal
Neal Posted September 22, 2012 Author Posted September 22, 2012 (edited) Banged on a couple of coats of klear and fished the canopy out of the klear bath. Whilst that's all drying I've squinted through a magnifying glass and got the ground crew painted up. I've followed Paul's suggested outfit and using a single hair I've painted on the early 90's 'tache, even so it's probably on the Dick Strawbridge scale. I noticed in my GR4 pic that all 3 under body pylons are fitted was this usual in the early 90's as well? Edited September 22, 2012 by Neal 1
Neal Posted September 23, 2012 Author Posted September 23, 2012 Following Marks lead with his build I've started some RBF tags http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=234926261 Just need to turn this pile of painted plastic into a Tornado now. Decals next.
mark73 Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Nice work, looking forward to seeing this finished
nimrod54 Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Good to see this back on the go again Neal. Great work on the figure.

Neal Posted September 24, 2012 Author Posted September 24, 2012 I've given some of the larger decals a go on the less visible underside to see how they settle down and to see if I need to invest in some micro set. There are some quite complex curves on the tailfin that I want to get right. They look ok at the moment but I'll see what they're like tomorrow. Oh and I've knocked the HUD screen off twice.

Neal Posted September 25, 2012 Author Posted September 25, 2012 Cheers Mark. A quick check this evening and the main green & yellow decals have settled into the panel lines pretty well although they have come away a little on one of the wing tips. The aircraft codes under the wing bags have silvered a little which is disappointing, and doesn't bode well for the large stencils on the top of the fuselage. On balance some micro sol / set might be worth the investment.
Murdo Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Now that is insane! Deeply skilled, but insane.
Neal Posted September 27, 2012 Author Posted September 27, 2012 (edited) Now that is insane! Deeply skilled, but insane. Thanks for the very kind comments Murdo, insane? a bit daft yes but good fun. Deeply skilled? Not really, the pics are quite flattering. Micro sol / set ordered so something new to learn about. Edited September 27, 2012 by Neal
