Modern RAF Air to Air Missiles 1/48

Folks

I'm needing to boost my collection of ASRAAM and AMRAAM stores for a current project and as you cannot (to my knowledge) buy them together in a weapons set, I was planning on buying a cheap'ish kit to harvest the stores from! Was thinking about the Revell Eurofighter kit but was wondering what other kits out there supply both missiles with the kit, Italeri Gripen for example?

On a side note, I've maybe missed it being announced but I take it with the Harrier long since departed the AIM-9M Sidewinder is now retired from British service?!

Any suggestions appreciated.

The AIM9L and M are externally the same and the Tornado GR4 still uses the L and

The RAF currently use the AIM120B and C versions of the AMRAAM.

All the above missiles are available in different kits and most modellers will have spares so just ask over in the "wanted" section within the buy sell section.

Hasegawa Weapon Set "E" comes with 8 X AIM120C. The rest of the set you could use for trade for the rest.

Scott,

RAF Tornado GR4 now got the AIM-132 ASRAAM, from photos that I've seen. Think they were flown just before Libya last year. Remember someone getting a photo of them on low-level in the UK. Didn't realise until later, that they weren't just AIM-9 training rounds or ACMI pods.

Regards,

Gerard

Yes, as far as I was aware the GR4 force is now using ASRAAM so the only aircraft that would still be capable of carrying Sidewinders would be the Hawk for training purposes!

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll give the wanted section a go.

Sidewinder is gone. The only 'winders still in use are the acquisition rounds carried by Hawks for training. All front-line aircraft carry ASRAAM.

Aviation Workshop do ASRAAMs in resin, and you can get AMRAAMs in Hasegawa's Weapons Set E.

Doesn't Revell's Typhoon also come with ASRAAM as well as Meteor? If you make it unarmed or one of the non-UK air forces, you could put AIM-9s or IRIS-T missiles on it. THe kit also comes with AMRAAM I believe. Get a free aeroplane with your weapon's set:)

The kit comes with ASRAAM, AMRAAM, IRIS-T, Meteor and Sidewinder, but you won't see any operational Sidewinders on the jets. The only 'winders they occasionally carry are inert rounds for ballast on test flights.

What has happened to the stocks of AIM9's, surely the Tornado still has the capability to fire the AIM9 as well as being able to fire ASRAAM?

I might have some AIM120's spare soon that you're welcome to have, how many do you require?

Cheers for all the replies folks, Jens thats exactly what I was thinking, a weapons set with a free aircraft kit, at the moment I have no interest in building a Typhoon for some reason but you never know in the future!

Scott, I need two of each so I think I'm going to go down the route of purchasing a Typhoon kit, thanks very much for the offer.

I assume the Revell Typhoon is better than the Italeri offering for weapons selection and quality?

I'm no expert on the matter, but I built a 1/48 Revell Typhoon and added Aviation workshop ASRAAM's to supplement the kit ones. Comparing them, the kit parts are smaller, slimmer and slightly shorter than the lovely resin examples. Thus, I would assume, the kit missiles are a tad inaccurate, but as i say, i'm no expert!

Missiles, like everything that has an explosive in it (or a rocket motor) are lifed, so I would imagine that they are either out of life and being disposed of, or if not they are being kept as a "war reserve" until they do run out of life.

Tornado should still be able to fire AIM-9, although it would depend on having missiles available for it to carry...
