erikmuntz Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 Still looking awesome! Watching your projects really gives me something to look forward to during school, haha. Or something to do if I have my phone. Watching and of course, taking notes Erik
Dr.Jellyfingers Posted May 12, 2012 Author Posted May 12, 2012 Cheers Erik, glad its brightening those dull moments, a long time ago for me !! Thanks again Jason, I'll probably end up making the tanks from Milliput, is the tank in front of the pit fuel or oil ? I'm having a few senior moments !! Made a little progress with the engine covers, its taken a while to cut these without including my fingers too! I think I'll be able to thin most of the panels to a realistic thickness, the ones that wont lend to that I'll make from copper. Few pics:- I'll open uo the cover for the genereator after I've put the engine frame it to keep it square. On to building the bulkhead bits and the intake needs to be fiddled with, probably re-make it in copper. More soon, Si.
tank152 Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 I tend not to measure anything and just use the 'hold it to it' and give it the eye method, I really am roughSi. Where I first started working we had a foreman whose favourite saying was "the eyes don't lie" in other words if it looks right it normally is right. He wasn't wrong either. Progressing well Si.
Dr.Jellyfingers Posted May 13, 2012 Author Posted May 13, 2012 Cheers Tank, A little progress tonight on the engine bay. Around three hours ago I had a nice cottage pie from ASDA which came in a fairly nice looking ally container, slightly thinner than my copper and once heated, nice and plyable! I used this to plate the wing roots and spar as they pass though the engine bay, then used some copper to form the bearers for the engine itself. A few bits of stock styrene and its not far off some paint. A few pics:- Going to have a go at soldering up the intake tunnel now, fortunately if the crew were taking the engine out most of the complicated, curved intake would be removed just leaving a stright, rectangular opening down to the radiator. That's how it seems to be! More soon, Si.
tank152 Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Excellent stuff, all done by the mark one eye ball method again?
Martian Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Probably your best aircraft build yet Si and thats up against some pretty dtiff opposition! I'm sure we are all looking forward to the diorama taking shape! No pressure or anything. Martin
erikmuntz Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 You are just bringing down the house with this one, aren't you?! That looks great, mate, looks great. Your engine work has been incredible and the interior looks just as good. Looking forward to the rest of this one and Erik
Dr.Jellyfingers Posted May 15, 2012 Author Posted May 15, 2012 Excellent stuff, all done by the mark one eye ball method again? Cheers Tank, and yes, cobbling things together and 'heavy-weathering' the bits that go boobs skywards !! Probably your best aircraft build yet Si and thats up against some pretty dtiff opposition! I'm sure we are all looking forward to the diorama taking shape! No pressure or anything.Martin Thanks Martin, I've a few ideas, still thinking of the greenhouse roof for the workshop so long as It doesn't look like a conservatory! You are just bringing down the house with this one, aren't you?! That looks great, mate, looks great. Your engine work has been incredible and the interior looks just as good. Looking forward to the rest of this one and Erik Thanks Erik, it may go on for a bit this one, bit like the others ! A little progress tonight with the air intakes for the engine induction and radiator. The copper tunnel looks to be about right but I think it has a flap it it, I'll try to get a clearer pic of that and add it if its there. The washer on the induction intake will have the white tube reamed out to look larger once the epoxy on the washer is dry. A few pics:- A few pipes and wires and I can get the fuse and wings all glued up then onto the U/C. More soon, Si.
Dr.Jellyfingers Posted May 15, 2012 Author Posted May 15, 2012 Eve all, I decided the washer looked too thick and I couldn't drill bolt holes in it so I've re-made it from copper and drilled it. Also done some extream weathering in the bay, I'm presuming it woould have got quite nasty in there! A few pics:- Possibly more later, Si.
Canuck63 Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 (edited) Ok...here we go again...another crazy guy badly needing psychiatric support!Jeez Si.....it's turning out a beauty !I can only imagine what will you do when you'll tackle the Tamiya IL-2...because you LOVE IL-2s,don't you? This forum's really great and very, very friendly;you feel yourself at home and it's a pleasure to see such marvels shared with the rest of the lot! Hope to post something new myself quite soon! Cheers Manu Edited May 15, 2012 by Canuck63
Learstang Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Great looking work, Si! Great job with that induction pipe. The way the Hobby Boss kit is engineered there wasn't room for me to do that, and I know it didn't come through the wing spar, so I just left it off. Here are some more photographs. (As an aside, I love what someone, on this very site I believe, wrote - they'd rather spend time with Hyacinth Bucket than photobucket! Luckily my experiences with photobucket haven't been as bad as theirs.) Something to note: the port diagonal engine bearer has a slight bow in it so the oil pipes can clear it on the inside. If you look closely on the first photograph you might be able to see this. The last picture is a drawing of the engine from the front with the two oil tanks as egg-shaped objects on either side of the engine. Regarding a previous question, the large integrally-moulded tank in front of the cockpit on the AM kit is a fuel tank and should be painted black. Now don't go and ruin this great build with some ludicrous apple-green/black or green/brown scheme! Regards, Jason
tank152 Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 I think that was a wise move to replace that washer, the copper flange looks far better. After your last build this one is producing some serious modelling work.
Alan P Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Looks like a tank in there! Lovely representation. Possibly more later Oh, we do very hope so!
Dr.Jellyfingers Posted May 17, 2012 Author Posted May 17, 2012 Ta for that PHaTNesS, there's plenty more to come yet ! Thanks for the info again Jason. I've taken both the struts off and put bends in both as I found some pics from the other side and I suppose with the engine being fairly symetrical it makes sense for them both to have clearence. Here's the site I found, some good pics on it:- http://www.historicflight.cz/html/main.asp...mp;subpage=Il-2, bet you've already got that! I've glued the engine bay to the fuse' and surprisingly it won't need much filler to make it good! Also added some more plumbing that I'll detail and route round once the dio starts to take shape. Quick pic:- Decided that the nice little gun would benefit from some attension, I've removed the locating tab for the slide for the back of the gunner pit, made the groove deeper and slightly wider. In the instructions you are told to remove some tabs from the gun mount to enable it to be glued to the slide, I want mine to slide ! I've removed the tabs and drilled out the bracket then inserted a bit of wire and now my gun moves left and right ! Also did some work on this bit, the kit ammo belt. I still think SCSI cable makes much better ammo belts! A few pics of the result:- I think there's a gun sight along a balance tube on the gun, if I can confirm I'll add that later then paint it up. More soon, Si.
Learstang Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Here are some more photographs for you Si. The last one is of the pneumatic starter motor at the front of the AM-38 engine. Enjoy! Regards, Jason
Martian Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Nice work Si! The weathering in the engine bay is very effective. Martin
shark 64 Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 I dig the rusted look....Dont know if calling it rusted is right but it looks fantastic. You guys rock on this site. Love the build dude. Oliver
Fozzy Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 A great rust effect Si..she must have been sitting around for years! ...looking great as usual.
Dr.Jellyfingers Posted May 18, 2012 Author Posted May 18, 2012 Nice work Si! The weathering in the engine bay is very effective.Martin Cheers Martin, not sure if I've overdone the rust but it doesn't look as rusty in real life! I dig the rusted look....Dont know if calling it rusted is right but it looks fantastic. You guys rock on this site. Love the build dude.Oliver It's definately rusted Oliver, my thinking that the enginge has given up hence a new one going in so I'll probabbly add some fresh oil stains towards the end of the build! Great pics again Jason. I've been fiddling with the gun and seen what I think is an upgrade balance or recoil tube on the gun so I thought if it's having a new engine it can have the upgraded gun, just 'cos it looked easy to add really ! Plus it now slide about a bit too! Few pics:- It just needs the weathering touching up and its done I think. Next is to get the wings on and the U/C sorted out. More soon, Si.

lufbramatt Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Using computer ribbon cable for the ammo feeds is an amzing idea- will be using that one in the future! Build looks great
Learstang Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Glad you liked the photographs. The gun looks great, Si! That tube was some sort of recharging device that replaced the manual recharging on the earlier guns. Since this a late war Shturmovik (metal arrow wings), this would be appropriate. Regards, Jason

Glad you liked the photographs. The gun looks great, Si! That tube was some sort of recharging device that replaced the manual recharging on the earlier guns. Since this a late war Shturmovik (metal arrow wings), this would be appropriate.Regards, Jason I must admit to being a little apprehensive about adding it, whilst I'm not an accuracy nut I am aware that certain people watching are expecting some accuracy from me this time! I'm sort of counting on you to keep me on the right lines!! BTW do you have any pics on typical Russian airfield workshop/hanger buildings? Just a quick pic of a bit of a mock-up, mainly for me but thought I'd share. I'm fairly happy with the cowl to fuse join after all my chopping. It is in need of a spot of filler round the leading edge wing root. the wings should be glued on by the end of tonight and I fancy having a go at that air intake, should be able to sort some nice mesh for that! Si.
Learstang Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 ...I must admit to being a little apprehensive about adding it, whilst I'm not an accuracy nut I am aware that certain people watching are expecting some accuracy from me this time! I'm sort of counting on you to keep me on the right lines!! BTW do you have any pics on typical Russian airfield workshop/hanger buildings? ... Si. Not to worry, Si, that's what I'm here for. Do you know which particular aeroplane you're doing (markings-wise)? There should be photographs of it (of course, that's why they have the markings for it!). If you have photographs, go by those to see if the UBT (the machine gun) has the automatic recharger or not. Regarding a typical Soviet airfield, for Shturmoviks it was just that, a field! I will however endeavour to see if I don't have something in my huge (electronic) pile of pictures to fit the bill of a more proper airfield with workshops and the like. By the way, that is looking nice - you can almost smell the Soviet 95 octane petrol! Regards, Jason
Martian Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 This is really shaping up Si. I think you underestimate your talent for this sort of thing. Martin
