Thanks Troy,

I think I remember seeing a table with all the individual colours for the engine and ancillaries in one of the links you supplied.

I should think about painting it before I add too much cobblers to it. I painted it all silver to get a feel of where I need to add filler.

A couple of pics of tonights progress, some ignitioney bits :-

Troy, that list of engine colours and colours for the various systems (air, hydraulic, coolant, etc.) agrees with Mr. Orlov's work on the subject (the Russian expert on Soviet VVS colours for those who aren't familiar with him). I think it's safe to go by that. Just for the record, I painted my Hobby Boss AM-38 in a light to medium grey (Testors MM Light Ghost Grey), with black cylinders, and with the various pipes and wires painted as per the table mentioned in your post. Fortunately, AM have the fuselage as the correct wooden fuselage on the arrow kit, so no filling is needed. As far as the "Za Leningrad" aeroplane(s), it sounds like those are two different aircraft as they have two different borts (aircraft numbers).

Jason

Again, great work on the engine Si! You must like working on engines to scratchbuild one. Here are a few photographs of mine. May help, may not.

Jason

Thanks for those Jason, they will help a lot, I'll start painting it something like the correct colours before I get too carried away with wires!

I'll try to keep it scale with the plumbing as its easy to go mad then it just looks like a dollop of spagetti!

I've found a tin of Hum23 which looks nearly right for the interior, I'll be mixing some colour in the next day or two but I'll post tests before comitting. I'm not massive on accuracy be it colours or detail but this subject could probably do with me making a little extra effort this time!

Thanks again for the help Jason,

More soon, Si.

You're welcome, Si! One thing I need to add about my engine - I painted the cylinder blocks steel, with the cylinder head covers black. Sometimes the covers were steel also, but I liked the contrast, and I have seen photographs where they were clearly a dark colour, probably black.

I can tell you like making engines Si!!...the one your working on is looking fantastic mate! ;)

Thanks guys! :)

Progress has slowed a little, mainly due to me actually getting some more paid work, soon I'll not need to ponce off the wife !!

Managed to make a reasonable sump and gearbox with that funky Milliput stuff. Also made the ouput shaft and got some bits painted, thanks to Jason again for the paint guide, I'll follow that for the detail painting once all the cobblers are on.

A couple of pics:-

And it still will fit in the fuse if I wanted it to!!

More soon,

Si.

BTW Jason, does the 38 definately have three injectors per inlet manifold, I seem to remember reading about only two but that may be the 35??

Eve all,

Now the Milliput has cured I cut the recess for the starter unit and stuck it on,

Oops! Sorry, Si. It looks like my e-mail notification is a bit wonky. I would have gotten back to you about the engine if I'd seen this posting. At any rate, it looks like you've gone with the three injectors which according to photographs is correct (I always check photographs when working on any Shturmovik - too many inaccuracies in drawings, even Soviet ones). Your AM-38 is really looking the part, it's a shame you won't be displaying it in the airframe.

Nice build so far, really adds to the look of the kit :)

A good thing would be to correct the spinner, which is kinda too rounded on the AM kit.

Ummm, all I can say is WOW!!!!! :worthy: That is just great work there, truly inspirational.

Si, warhawk is correct. The main shortcoming of this kit is the too-rounded spinner - this can be corrected with the Vector set, which includes both the spinner and propeller blades.

Thanks for the support and info' guy's, it's very much appreciated.

I've been doing a little detail painting ready for adding the final bits which will be the oil pump and electric generator and a few more pipes and wires.

It should be finished over the weekend and seeing as I've gone a bit daft agan with engine building, (not done a thing with the kit yet), it now won't easily fit in the fuse'! I always intended to display it separately anyway, now I'm thinking of a cut-away workshop area with this in and some other bits.

I'm thinking of building a fairly detailed worshop with large transparent roof panels and big-ish windows so you'll be able to see the detail, I now need to find some pic's of typical Rusian airfield workshps!

Also had some ideas to get some of the workshop equipment animated, still have lots of little motors and actuators that need a home so thinking of lathe and drill press for starters, any ideas chaps ?!!

Should be more soom

Si, if you need some photographs of IL-2's being worked on, I might be able to scrounge up a few. Just let me know!

Some pics would be great Jason, thanks in advance mate !

The engine is basically finished aside from final detail painting and weathering. I'm sort of thinking now that I might like this just out of the airframe on a hoist of some sort, either just removed or just going in. Now I need detail of the inside of the engine bay and what panels were likely to be off with an engine replacement!

Still fancy the workshop with some moving bits in !

Beautiful little AM-38, Si! Aleksandr Mikulin would have been proud. I'll find some piccies and post them.

I reckon having the engine on a hoist would be a good idea as it would be a chance to show off the rarely seen firewall detail and structure. Perhaps there might be a way of using one of the cats in that pack of animals you picked up for the Japanese diorama? BTW who makes this pack as I think I would like to get one for my bases?

Martin

Thanks guys,

Martin the little cat & dog set is made by Noch, part number 15715, I can pick one up for you if you want?

Last few pics of this engine. I've added another set of ignition wires, a few more pipes and painted them. I'll do the final weathering later once I've decided if its a new engine or a duffer that's coming out!

Must get on with the kit now, work out what panels can be removed and what detail to shoe-horn in !

Si, here are some photographs that may help you in showing the engine being serviced or moved. The second-to-last photograph of a wreck shows what the "firewall" consisted of; the front wing-spar carry-through, and the small armour plate in front of the top forward fuel tank. The last photograph shows my humble model before I attached the engine (the engine bearers are not present yet). I also threw in a photograph of an IL-2 being overhauled/repaired.

Jason
