Will Vale 5,171
Thanks guys, that's very kind of you. I did a bit more at the weekend and the result is a new sample basket. It was fiddly cutting out the sides from 0.25mm styrene, but it should be worth it. I'm still making the other one which has even smaller cut-outs. I'll have another go at cleaning up the filler and then hopefully spray it matt black this afternoon. [edit: got some paint on, looks much better. Sadly that might be the last spraying day for a while since the weather is turning to custard from tomorrow...] Will Edited April 2, 2012 by Will Vale

That was really worth doing, well done! Excellent build. Inspiring The more you do, the more I realise I'll never do the kit as much justice... Adam
Will Vale 5,171
I don't believe that for a minute - you're the one providing the reference and general egging-on! It'll be nice to see someone else build it since it's such a neat kit - just a pity that there's only one colour scheme really. The mesh is from a Trumpeter LAV-R I bought to make this: As you can see there's a lot of kit left-over. I used some mesh on the radiator of the hydraulic power unit (not visible there) and you can see the bit for the baskets (the large square one) visible in one of the images in this review. Looking at that I'm a mite worried that I don't have enough to do the second box, but I think I can maybe stitch it together from bits and cover the gaps with some scientific stowage. Dave Batt 416
Grrrrr! Now why did you make me look at this thread? I thought building one of the Bronco 1/350 scale Victorian era Chinese battleships was enough to refresh the palate (from my usual aircraft diet) for a while. Now I want one of these kits! Seriously, this is a fantastic bit of work and has really opened my eyes. Thank you.
Will Vale 5,171
Thanks! I'd really recommend this one, there's scope to spend a lot of effort on it, but it makes a marginal difference since the basic kit is really nice. After a timely KUTA from Adam I made the second sample basket today - that should be the most difficult part of this project (it took about 3 hours) over with. It's a bit scruffy still, but not much worse than previous one so fair enough. Second sample basket by Will Vale, on Flickr Cheers, Will

Will Vale 5,171
Nearly done now. I was expecting the manipulators to be easy/fun but there was quite a bit of work involved, particularly painting the cameras with all their different coloured rings and reflectors. (click for big) I got all the wiring done for the manipulators, bundled the cables and it looked great but didn't fit into the space allowed when I tried to fit the parts - drat. I ended up pulling out the rear ends of the cables and re-fitting/re-routing them. Finally got it all together and ran some washes on to define the shapes a bit better. I also installed the camera turrets, which were much easier to wire but would look better if the cables were bundled. On the real one they're in one of those spiral wraps, so I can't really do what I did for the hydraulics and tie them together with thread. I suspect they'll just stay as they are now, or possibly I could glue them together in pairs? I've got a bit of misc. weathering to do, and tidying up, but hopefully I can take some decent pictures tomorrow to post in RFI Cheers and thanks for following along! Madam I'm Adam 3
Is that a 1/48 cable tie? Looks great. Adam
