Think that's all they were carrying during the Libya campaign, just had a quick check and I've found two photo's in AFM of an 11 Sqn (ZJ933) and 3 Sqn (possibly ZJ623?) airframes carrying enhanced Paveway II and carrying Op Ellamy markings.

Mark, thats a Paveway III, pretty sure there not cleared to be carried yet, the next set of weapons to be cleared with the Block 8 upgrade SRP14 (I think) are Storm Shadow, Paveway IV, Brimstone and the Meteor AAM. The Paveway III is a 2000lb weapon so not sure how many the airframe would be able to carry when loaded.

Yes, Tornado GR4 cleared for and used on operations in Op Telic. Yes, your spot on with the photo, you need Paveway II's like the training rounds in the photo, or live of course. Not sure if they would ever carry six on real world ops but you never know!! :)

Hyperthetically.... if i were to do a fully 'bombed up' typhoon i would go for:

STN 1 & 2... ASRAAM

STN 3 & 4... MFRL with AMRAAM

STN 5 & 6...1000ltr SFT's

STN 7 & 8... PAVEWAY II

STN 9 & 12... AMRAAM

STN 13 ... LDP

not saying that this load is gospel.... but it isnt far from the realms of possability.

Harriers also used the 2000Lb paveway, sometimes balanced with a fuel tank on the opp side

Julien

Harriers did use PW3 , carried on the inboards, fuel tanks were moved to the intermediates and the balance was on the L/H outboard, a CBU or 540, Fuel tanks weren't used as a balance.

If you put Typhoon Gioia Del Colle into search on Yahoo images, there are a number of shots of Typhoons loaded with Enhanced Paveway 2, in the shots you'll see they have two silver bands mid way on the bomb body, basically these are two huge jubilie clips that secure the conduit to the bomb, also two round aerials on top and bottom of the head (GPS).

I was shown a picture of a Harrier with one PWIII on one side and a fuel tank on the other side, only carrying the one tank?

That seem strange as on release it would leave the jet aysimetric, don't suppose you have the pic?

Cheers

If you want "gospel" then the load would be as follows

Tips - ASRAAM

Outboards - EPW2

Centre-Wing - Tanks

Inboards - EPW2

Fuselage Launchers - AMRAAM

Centreline - LITENING III pod

That's a pretty realistic combat load. As for the question about the bombs in the box, they are non-enhanced UK Paveway IIIs, so they are good for Tornados and Harriers (and I've seen a photo of one on the centreline of a Jaguar) but not Typhoon. For Typhoon you want enhanced UK Paveway II 1000lb bombs.

Not unusual, though. The Super Etendard balances an Exocet with a tank and the F-105 sometimes did the same with an M118 (3000lb!).

Hi Mark,

These any use to you? Practise EPW II rounds on a bird late last year. Pilot saw the pics and was intouch afterwards and said they were dumped on Aberporth range. Pretty poor light at the time I'm afraid.
