All the ones I've seen are coloured red, but I saw a reference that said they were brass.

Were the USN and Royal Navy different?

From a long ago memory, these could have been the old Carbon Tetra Chloride (CTC) extinguishers, which IIRC were banned when it was found out that when used on a fire, they produced a poisonous gas.

The body of these extinguishers was a brass/copper colour, IIRC.

I am ready to stand corrected if anyone knows better.

Cheers, Brian
