A week off

F-32

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have next week off due to the discovery of 17 holiday days not yet taken and the threat of losing these if I don't take some by the beginning of April. So I'm going to have what my boss is describing as a geek week!

My plan is to do the following:

Monday: RAF Brize Norton to see the Herc's, VC's and Tristars

Tueday: Long Marston to see the Shackleton, Wellsbourne for the Vulcan and then Brunty

Wednesday: Norfolk & Suffolk aircraft museum, Norwich aircraft museum and then Lakenheath to see the Eagles

Does anyone have any suggestions of anything else I can do around these locations? I'll be there so I might as well cram in as much as possible!

Cheers

Tony

Definately Midland museum, haven't been there for over ten years (nice one smeds) and I guess a stop in to see the Nimrod at East Midlands needs to be done too :)

I hadn't considered going up as far as Lincolnshire but I guess I could always book into a nice country hotel with a good selection of bitter on tap.............. :hmmm:

Thanks chaps

If you're Lincoln bound stop at the Peckwood for a drink in the Dambusters room, then visit the Bluebell for lamb shanks.

And there's a nice ice cream place in Woodhall Spa.

That's not a bad idea Radleigh..................I suddenly realised they'll be gone in a couple of years and I haven't seen them in the air too often, the occassional flypast at Fairford and a display at Biggin Hill has been my lot.

Same with the Eagles, they've been here for over 20 years and I've never paid them a visit.........................which is just rude to be honest!

What about Raf Cosford, they have two new planes a Hercules and Gr9 Harrier (haven't been my self to see them, hoping someone would post pic), good day out, free entry except car park fee, which isn't stupid price

Exactly, Museum stuff isn't going no where and could always be a family day out one weekend, make the most of it and get some VC-10's or something. If the weathers good with clear skies, Brize and Lakenheath are GREAT for photos.

If you've not been to Brize much, i'll get a link to show you the good spots. :)

For some reason I can't post the link, but if you go to google and type in 'brize norton spotting guide' You want the thunder-and-lightnings guide, it shows you loads of spots.

The road that leads up to H is called Burford Road, You can park up there with no problems, and when you get towards the crash gate, you'll see a slip road with Public Footpath signs to your left, you can drive up there, round the twisty bends and park at the very end. You'll see C-130's parked up to your right, If you have steps, you can take photos over the fence. If you walk the footpath to the end of the runway, you can get shots like this ( http://russianplanes.net/EN/ID66343 ) which I took around xmas time. This was at 360/400mm though and only really good if something big comes in. Your best bet is spot K (my favourite) if there are alot of movements, good take off shots and landing (get them coming off the runway)

I stayed here a few years ago -

Comfortable room, good grub, can hear (and possibly see depending what room you get) the hardware doing circuits and bumps at Coningsby.
