WW1 vintage VW class destroyer

Recommended Posts

I was given a couple of these castings some years ago,by the producer of Rhenania models in Germany. For those that don't know,Norbert Broecher makes some of the very finest models in the World, either military or civil. He had several "gash" models with parts poorly cast or broken off,and I was happy to take them off him. Suffice to say that have sat around since, waiting the time to finish them, and,as afar as I know, the model is well and truly OOP,as are a lot of models made in this scale.

I finally got around the cleaning one up,and adding some extra details, such as bridge supports, masts, finer gun barrels,TT davits etc. Blown over with some primer it is starting to look like the classic British destroyer.

Having painted it, I thought I'd have a go at some simple rigging, a skill I have wanted to try and master for some time. A trip to SMW and a look at the likes of Messrs Baumann, McCabe and Kernaghan will inspire anyone I think, though I have along way to go and see this as just an apprentice piece. The "rigging" is not as fine as I'd like, and takes some careful handling, but I think the next will be better. As it is,this makes no pretence at being scale nor realistic, but at 1/1250 scale I think the usual materials used by 1/700 and larger models won't work.

I managed to lose the decals in the intervening years, which is why it remains unnamed until I can source/make some. It retains the correct, early twin TTs.

If you want to see how it should be done,I suggest a visit to www.finewaterline.com
