Fw-190 D-11

Recommended Posts

Now i feel its safe to say that when i first started following this build i thought

A. He wont beable to get this to work .

B. if he does manage to squeez everything in it will look like the FW190 version of Mr creasote.

The answer to both

A. you have managed to build the Eduard Version of a Faberge Egg

B. It looks smashing

This could herald a new age of models on stands.

That is incredibly kind, thank you. I have to admit, I never really thought I would get all this to work, in such a compact airframe. The landing gear proved to be the biggest headache. At the end of the day I only went to this levels as I wanted to see just what you could accomplish with enough time and mad imagination. Overall I am very very happy with it. Once i fix the backwards decal, then I shall Gloss it all up, then onto the fun part....weathering.

Been on a roll today chaps, Fixed the silly issue of the backwards decal (still no idea how I managed that) Then cracked out the aqua Gloss, after a session of spraying that and it curing, it was time to start the weathering process. Now bear in mind the photos as usual dont do it justice. Also if paint chipping, or heavily weathered Dora's are not your thing, then walk away now.

You still here...

Good.

Paint chipping was achieved using a very fine brush, and hours of patience. Once I had a level I was happy with (well sorta, who is ever fully happy with the finished article) I then proceeded to add the washes. Mainly used MiG dark and neutral washes, I was aiming for a heavily weathered and generally beaten down look, I like to think I have achieved this. Of course this is not fully 100% accurate as I have no photos to go one, so I just went with what felt and looked right. My main question is though...what you all think, be gentle as this is my first ever time at weathering a plane, I usually go for the factory fresh scheme.

Well here we are, picture time, wish I was better at taking pictures as I seem to of failed to grab the essence of the tonal variations that are on the real thing. ah well, you will just have to believe me that it looks better in real life.

Enjoy, as usual all feedback is deeply welcome (Tank, looking in your general direction here as yo have steered me right in the past) Also bear in mind, there is not alot I can do at this stage other then the odd wash to try and tone down the chipping if you feel its too prominent, or generally s***e.

Right , picture time:

I still have to add the exhaust staining, and the tail wheel (which is now painted) along with all the other bits and bobs, hopefully get this added tomorrow. Might even get the drop tank done, who knows.

Looking like I'm on the home straight though.

Cheers for watching.

Not sure how to answer your question Mottle, I added the Weld line as I came across some photos that showed it on D-9s and as we are well aware 109s, I liked the look of it on the 109, had this rudimentary appearance, so I assumed that it would be there on a war weary, multi repaired the D-11. I made mine by adding some stretched sprue. I dont think you could really get away with adding it via a re-scribe.

Well I hate to see models that look as if they've just come out of the factory, they just don't float my boat and I think they look like toys. So although a little over the top, this is right up my street. I'm not one for all the electrical gizmos but its been great to watch that paint job being transformed.

Cheers bud, aye she is a heavily weathered beast, looking forward to seeing how it comes out once the matt coat goes on. As for the electrical and other gizmos added, was really just a test to see what was possible, not all my models are as mad as this. Glad you like the look of it.

The matt coat calms things down a bit, I love playing around with the weathering, its probably the bit I enjoy the most, its great fun.

Aye I must admit, was a real hoot weathering this build, was toying with the idea of a post shade, but in the end I thought better of it, only second time I have used an airbrush properly, so thought I should take things slow,

Cheers all for the compliments, just a small update, spent the day adding various bits and bobs, the master barrels 30mm are works of art, very glad I added them. On a disappointing note, I started to build up my drop tank, only to find that it wont really fit....rear end clashes with the mounting electronic plug...seems I got my measurement out by a few mm...ah well. Will just have to be flying without a drop tank.

Model is now very very close to being finished, hopefully it shall be done by the weekend.

Cheers bud, chipping was done with a very, very fine brush, and more patience then I was aware I had.

Small update, pictures to follow some time this weekend. Model is now pretty much done, the electronic base with battery compartment has now been fully constructed and painted, matt coat has gone on the model, and all the fiddly bits have been added. I have also added fuse wire for the aerial. My canopy was causing me a problem with the aerial so ii mounted a small magnet inside it, and added a magnet to the rear of the cockpit, the canopy is now held firmly in place...until I want to remove it and have a look inside.

Interesting fact...this model contains no fewer than 44 individual magnets...

You have become quite a "magnetic builder" as people are "drawn to your builds". Sorry had to be said!!

Great stuff and shows how a little "out of the box" thinking can give such a result!!

Well chaps its been emotional, but sadly my epic journey has come to an end. I honestly cannot remember having this much fun building a kit, so to Steve and Rowan, and all the rest of you, cheers for a simply fantastic group build.

Before I show you the photos a little back story is in order (fictional).

In February 1945 JG./300 received a small attachment of Fw-190 D-11's. One of these was Red 4. During the following weeks Red 4 was involved mainly in Defence of the Reich. During one such encounter in March 1945 Red 4 engaged a flight of Tempests over Berlin, during the ensuing dogfight Red 4 received multiple 20 mm cannon hits, forced to make an emergency landing in a nearby field. The resulting damage to the plane required a new tail section taken from a scarped D-9, the canopy was also severely damaged and required a replacement. Due to a shortage in 'Galland Blown' Canopies a standard old style canopy was sourced and fitted, however the original armoured headrest was retained on the pilots request. Red 4 continued to fly until its eventual destruction on May 6th 1945, when it was heavily engaged by a strong patrol of P-51s escorting a B-17 bomber stream headed for Berlin.

And now Ladies and Gentleman I present to you Red 4.

And finally I have a short video of the beast in ''Flight'' IN FLIGHT VID.

I must say it was damned difficult picking the final 4 photos for the RFI section, not an easy task.

To everyone in the GB thank you for watching and the continuous support.
