marty_hopkirk
I have been dabbling with these for a couple of years but resolved to get them complete this year. - Disney Moonliner (IPMS Ltd ed, with Base) - Forbidden Planet Robby "film poster" (Polar Lights kit with Paragrafix etch, Mecha Labs light kit, Jimmy Flintstone Altaira figure and base and posed/corrected legs) Try to create this: - Forbidden Planet Robby (Same aftermarket parts, except Space Babe figure base and figure instead of Altaira) - LiS B9 Robot (Mecha Labs light kit, Creature Arts Corrected arms and dome, Jimmy Flintstone Marta Kristen figure and Base) - Spindrift (TSDS interior, Crows Nest Deanna Lund figure/stand, Paragrafix etch and Easy LED) Trying to recreate the LotG promo shot below. As I have mentioned aBOVE they have all been in the works for a while. The figures are all cleaned up assembled and have a flesh base coat, but need painting. The bases have been cleaned up and have been painted and are complete. The Moonliner and Spindrift are reasonably well advanced. The Spindrift has been a breeze (not surprising as it a modern kit). The Moonliner whilst a simple kit belies it age lots sink mark the, the breakdown of parts of is not really conducive - particulary the main rocket body which is three long 'fingers' which is challenge to to get a true cylindrical cross section - which is not helped by the styrene being brittle and flimsy also. But, I got there its together and has the top coat on. I'm not using the glazing in the kit as it is clunky and would have made painting a pain, I'm going down Kristal Klear route. Photo's soon, but in the meantime some links to some of the products I'm using: http://www.jimmyflintstonestudios.com/onli...mages&p=522 http://www.jimmyflintstonestudios.com/onli...mages&p=529 http://www.jimmyflintstonestudios.com/onli...mages&p=523 http://www.culttvmanshop.com/assets/images...robotgirl02.jpg http://www.culttvmanshop.com/assets/images...robotgirl01.jpg http://www.culttvmanshop.com/assets/images...y/pararob01.jpg http://www.culttvmanshop.com/assets/images...robbylight4.jpg http://www.culttvmanshop.com/assets/images...botlights03.jpg http://www.culttvmanshop.com/assets/images...botlights04.JPG http://www.culttvmanshop.com/assets/images...botlights01.JPG http://www.culttvmanshop.com/assets/images...x/paraspin1.jpg http://www.culttvmanshop.com/assets/images...ispindrifta.jpg http://www.culttvmanshop.com/assets/images...inibikini01.jpg Marty... Kallisti
Oh yes indeed, Deanna Lund sellotaped to a microscope slide made a very great impression on me as a boy... What was the Moonliner? Edited January 31, 2012 by Kallisti
marty_hopkirk
Ooh, I'm definitely watching this thread. Forbidden Planet and Land of the Giants, with the wonderful Deanna Lund... Crikey, no pressure there then! I dug out the three Mecha light kits out, it appears I have already done the wiring but forgot I had done so - therefore I'm further advanced thn I I thought. All the figure kits are really well cast and went together reasonably well, but they did needing a fair bit of cleaning and filling, but all were well thought out, so no detail was lost fairing them over. I'll try and post some images over the weekend. Marty... Edited February 2, 2012 by marty_hopkirk
little-cars
If you get them finished before July you could exhibit them at the smallspace show!
marty_hopkirk
If you get them finished before July you could exhibit them at the smallspace show! Two issues here, realistically I'm unlikely to get them all finished by then. Secondly, as I pointed out in the Smallspace thread as much as I would like to attend the event it is long way way for me to travel to, albeit in hopefully better summer weather. I also need to keep my options open for various other reasons. But, I won't completely rule out the notion out of making it along. Marty... marty_hopkirk
I have kept to my promise and have taken some photos of progress to date this weekend, albeit through the crappy camera on iPhone 3 - I'm not due an iPhone 4 until the summer. I'm a pretty atrocious photographer at the best of times so excuse me. With that in mind the models do look better than the images portray particulary the bases in the images below. First up, Ms. Lund holding Spindrift. There is still some cleaning up of the paint work. Because I added the TSDS light translucent interior I have had to come up with an inventive way of of painting the part then filling. I did this be decanting Halford paint, which thickens nicely and this needs to be cleaned up on Spindrift by running down the Micro Mesh grades. Obviously the Deanna figure needs to be painted. the wire tails connect to the Easy LED, which is tested and working and inside Spindrift. I'm far from satisfied how I painted the grilles. Behind the grilles to te get the correct red 'glow' I cut and cemented in (using Kristal Klear) theartrical gel. Onto... A couple of space babes, on the left is Marta Kristen and the right is Altaira from Fidden Planet. Assembled, filled abraded and faired using a base coat of white primer coat on top is a base of Tamyia flesh. The front of the B.9 and Mara Kristen base and the work to date carried out on the robot. This is the robot from the Dr. Smith and Robot combo kit - Polar lights upgraded this kit and corrected a number of fundemental errors apparent in the earlier kit. For some reason Polar Lights use ABS styrene so liquid cement that is suitible for ABS obviously has to be used. I carried out a lot of work to hide the seams in the corrugated flexible rubber parts. A view of the rear. The Robby Poster plonked on a turned hardwood timber base. The legs required a significant amount of cleaning up. I have to work out a method of feeding the wiring through the legs and the base. The Space Babe and Robby base. The Space Babe assembled primed again with white and a base coat of Tamyia flesh applied. The completed Moonliner base only awaiting the application of the 'nameplate' decal. This really does look better in the flesh. The Disney/TWA Moonliner. The landing legs are 'jury attached'. They still require more cleaning up work and painting - a simple kit that was the original sink-mark queen. Marty... Your not kidding Can I politely suggest you turn on a light, or two and find away of holding the camera still...or is the i phone 3 really that poor? In which case a cheap digi camera would probably be an improvement. I only say this because I think you are on a great build and it would be really great to see the quality shine through.
