canberraman
There's a few other preserved aircraft at Cottesmore (or at least there were when I last visited in 2011). Anyone know whether there are plans to save the Hunter F6 XE606 displayed outside the IV(AC) Sqn hangar, and the pair of SHARs ZH800 and ZH801 shown beneath. So sad if they are to be scrapped. speedy
We've probably sold that one as well.
Wafu
The 801 Sqdn a/c shows the plug very well. Great shame that someone can't store these great machines for show. Thats the throw away world we live in I suppose.
Julien
According to the article the GR3 is going to Swanick Julien
Pete T
Both SHARS are now resident at RNAS Yeovilton. The Hunter is still in situ outside the former IV Sqn hangar I believe.
smeds
Thought if it was going to be scrapped, it would have been cut up on site rather than lifted with care (cushioned straps) as seen in your pic Merv.
jimbuna
The Harriers, which completed their final flight in December 2010, have been sold to the US Marine Corps in a deal worth £110m. I wonder what the number of aircraft involved was?
Work In Progress
I wonder what the number of aircraft involved was? 74 aircraft, plus additional engines and spares.

Benbow
Don't worry fellas it's not off to be scrapped!! As Cottesmore is no more and hence no need for a Gate Guardian it's been nabbed by my boss (whose pleased as punch and like a kid in a sweet shop) to be used a a Gate Guardian here instead- can't tell you where for the mo though- (To give you a clue though the old place used to have a Lightning as a gate guard and I believe the cockpit/nose of which now resides in a Maltese Air Museum!!) The pic you have is of it be lifted off and carted to Boscombe for a spit "n" polish in preparation for it being place on a plinth at its "new" home!!! Only thing I can say is that the general public won't be able to get a good sight of it at it new resting place. Ben
Julien
To quote the Stamford mercury Published on Wednesday 25 January 2012 17:40 THE Harrier outside the gate at RAF Cottesmore was removed today (Wednesday), marking the end of an era for the station. RAF Cottesmore is winding down as bosses prepare to close the base at the end of March, ahead of the Army taking moving in during the summer. A huge crane arrived to move the Harrier GR3, which has stood at the gate since 1999. It will be stored at the base and later moved to the military’s air traffic control centre in Swanwick, where it will be a gate guardian. bobgpw
Can't wait to see where they leave this - at least it will be a bit more stimulating than the forlorn Viscount prop that sits by the flagpoles. Bob
