Operation Musketeer in 1/72

Recommended Posts

I recently got the Trumpeter Wyvern kit in 1/72, and since I had resolved to paint it with those swell-looking yellow-and-black invasion markings for Suez, I thought it would be best to get some other period appropriate kits so that it didn't feel lonely. I also have the HobbyBoss Seahawk FGA.6 and am planning on picking up the Cyber-Hobby Sea Venom, but what other aircraft participated in the war, and, even more importantly, have available kit/decal options so they can be modelled in 1/72? Any particularly nice kits I should look out for?

You have most FAA types covered, you would need only some support types: the skyraider AEW, the avenger and the whirlwind and dragonfly helicopters. Now the whirlwinds can be built from the italeri kits of the H-19, and I'm sure someone will know what's the best option for the avenger (guess hasegawa), but the Skyraider requires the use of the aeroclub conversion on the hasegawa kit. Now only the Skyraider and the avenger carried stripes to the best of my knowledge.

If youwant to add the RAF types, then there's a good number:

- Canberra B.2/6 (old airfix kit only unfortunately)

- Hunter F.5 (revell kit with some modifications)

- Venom FB.4 (not sure there's anything apart from the CMR resin kit)

- Valiant (airfix kit, these did not carry stripes)

- Valetta C.1 (vacform kits only)

- Hastings C.1 (no kit that I know of is available)

- Pembroke C.1 (Special hobby kit)

- Sycamore (there's an old Glencoe kit in some scale that might be close enough to 1/72...)

- Shackleton MR.2 (convert from the frog MR.3 kit or reboxes, don't think they carried stripes)

The french Armee de l'Air and Aeronavale had a big part too and used several types:

- F-84F (airfix or italeri)

- RF-84F (italeri)

- Mystere IV (matchbox or its rebox from revell)

- F4U-7 (Italeri)

- Avenger (hasegawa? they did not carry stripes)

- Noratlas (heller)

- HUP-2 (A-model or Mach2)

As you see there are several interesting types and I haven't considered the Israeli aircrafts. Unfortunately several are not available as modern kits and other require some sort of conversion

Check! Preferably the briefly available "Avenger AS.6" boxing which included Suez markings, including transfers for the stripes (HA00769). Failing that, it needs to be a TBM-3 and preferably the night attack boxing which contains the underwing radar pod. If you can't get a AS.6 or night attack boxing, the radar pod is available separately from Quickboost.

- Venom FB.4 (not sure there's anything apart from the CMR resin kit)

Aeroclub made at least a couple of 1/72 Venom kits and an FB.4 was one of them.

They were styrene with some white metal parts.

I've seen them pop up occaisionally on ebay.

Wow, thanks for all the information so far! Are there many Suez decal options for these kits? I've seen a Suez F4U-7 boxing, but my limited research hasn't turned up an F-84 or Hunter F.5 decal option. (My interest lies more towards the fixed-wing combat types, rather than the helicopters and transports.)

Microscale 72-328 has French F-84F Suez markings on it.

Ah one of my favorite topics. I've built most of the UK front line aircraft, except for Sea Venom and the Valiant:

4B25.jpg

CMR Venom FB.4,

Revell Hunter F.5 (I milliputted the dogtooth wings to make them straight and did a bit of scribing)

Special Hobby Sea Hawk FG4

CMR Wyvern.

High Planes Canberra B.6

I've got four Frog Sea Venoms, and I'll probably pick up two of the upcoming CMR kits (instead of the Cyber hobby ones). I might do a small deck scene diorama with all these kits.

Czech Propacteam offers a Hunter F.5 decal scheme.... though I don't know if its accurate. There is some evidence that the F.5s had sand colored stripes.

I know you are not interested in Transport aircraft in the Suez crises, but I plan to make the HP Hastings (AIM kit) with the black and yellow invasion stripes, one of my late fathers friends was at Suez and probably parachuted from these aircraft

Dang man, I hope my efforts end up looking even half as nice as yours. That ol' Wyvern's so ugly she goes right back around to beautiful.

Do you know of a good place to get the Propagteam Hunter decals? I could only find them online at their website, which doesn't take credit cards.

That's it!!! I'm making my Hobbyboss Seahawk this those stripes!!!

That was roughly my response as well.

Cool, I hope you post it up here to be seen when you finish it!

Actually I really like the Wyvern... it was originally a strike fighter so it could have been quite nimble. However It was not well served by the slow throttle response of its turboprop and the weight of its carrier equipment. The CMR kit was a bit of a challenge, but I think it provides a bit better detail than the Trumpy kit.

Overall, let me make a plug for the CMR kits. They are simply some of the most accurate you can get and are really rewarding to build. Their Venom FB.4 is your only realistic option right now for that aircraft, but the price is worth it.

I don't, sorry. I bought mine in the Czech Republic. They may pop up from time to time on Ebay. However of all of the aircraft involved over Suez, the Hunter saw the least service. It participated in one strike, then was relegated to flying cap far away from the Egypt. The real stars were the Seahawk, Sea Venom, Venom and Wyvern... which undertook fairly challenging missions over Egyptian territory.

High Planes also did a B.20 which could be converted back to a B.2 - not a bad kit for a limited run, and the forward fuselage is MUCH more accurate than Airfix's offering. I don't know how available it might be at the moment.

They do a B.2, which you can order through HPM Models. I might actually build another one day. The High Planes model was one of the most difficult I've ever built, and mine isn't really that good. I rushed on a number of aspects and it really showed. It requires a lot of patience, but I've seen some great builds of them however, so its probably my skills that are suspects.

I know that helo`s are not your thing but Westland Whirlwind Mk.3`s from the Ships Flight of HMS Eagle undertook some challenging Combat Rescue operations to recover downed pilots behind Egyptian lines, sometimes under fire, and the Sycamores and Whirlwinds from 845 NAS and the Joint Helicopter Unit (ex Experimental but this was dropped for the operation as it might worry the Royal Marines!) flew the first amphibious heliborne operation in British service, and most likely the first to be undertaken in the world?

I have a long term ambition of building a Hastings and a Valetta from the Airborne Drop on El Gamil airfield and would like to mount a Jeep under the belly of the Hastings, but I`ve not got all of the info and reference material that I need yet.

Don`t forget that Meteor NF.13`s from 39 Sqn also wore Suez stripes, flying night operations from Cyprus and the Meteor FR.9`s of 208 Sqn were used to protect the Canberra and Valiant units operating from Malta, albeit without suez stripes applied and at least one Gannet based in Cyprus had Suez stripes applied.

All the best

Tony O

Edit; Sorry I meant to add that the models on this thread are wonderful and the CMR Venom in particular is devine, although the High Planes Canberra looks great too, I love the silver finish and the stripes on all of the models look so crisp!

This might interest Douglas AD4W / AEW-1 Skyraider conversion with suez stripes

Its a bit pricey tho!

And, alas, in 1:48 scale. Although it is quite impressive; I'd love to find something like that in 1:72, although it'd tax my meager skills to the limit.
