Boeing 727 Continental Golden Jet Decals

1/144 scale decals from Vintage Flyer Decals

The Boeing 727 is a narrow body tri-jet, built in the US by Boeing. The 727 first took to the air in 1963, and was being produced until 1984 with 1,831 aircraft rolling off the production line. Some 727s are still flying now, lots being converted to a freighter.

Continental Airlines was founded in 1934 and continued until 2011 when it was merged with United Airlines. Continental first started operating the Boeing 727 in the late 1960s, and they remained the workhorse of the fleet for the next 20 years.

This decal sheet is for the delivery livery worn by Continentals 727s, also known as the “Golden Jet” livery.

This sheet will fit the Airfix or Revell plastic kits in 1:144 or the Authentic Airliners resin kit also in 1:144.

The decal comes over 2 sheets, both are printed on a constant clear and as such will need some careful cutting. There are some basic instructions advising the use of Micro set and Micro sol when applying the decals. The first sheet, shown above is nicely printed, and the colours are good, and the details are sharp. There are some extra numbers on the sheet to allow you to build one of 5 aircraft from the Continental fleet. There are some non-metalic decals on this sheet and they are to be placed over the various antenna on the aircraft, this is noted on the instructions.

The second sheet is printed by Vintage Flyers new ALPS printer and has some white printed parts, and some gold trim lines for the livery. They are very nicely printed and the gold is nice and metallic.

There are some very finely detailed Continental logos for the engine pods along with the white oval backing, and for both sides of the nose.

The gold trim is well done and is sharply printed. There is some extra supplied in case of mistakes!

Conclusion

I have looked at some Vintage Flyer decals before, and now they have a new ALPs printer, I feel that the quality of the decals is much higher than previously.

I look forward to sticking these to a model!

This sheet is available in 1/72, 1/144 and 1/200 scale.

I have this set, intended for an ancient Revell 727-100 blank I have had ready to paint for 32 years (!!). I'm in the process of using a different set of decals from Vintage Flyer, and have a few tips:

1. The decal film is pretty tough, but the printing isn't. On the decal I was using (National DC-6B) I got a few pigment chips on the stripes when I cut them out using a straightedge and a #11 blade. Cutting out with scissors solves this problem.

2. The decals do respond to the Microscale decal system, but will take some coaxing over compound curves and bumps.

The Continental 727-100 set does indeed look good, and matches well with the one photo of the actual aircraft I've found:

Apparently it was a rare bird even when it was in service!
