1/48 F-14A, VF-84 'Cat shot, Desert Storm, 1991

Recommended Posts

The RIO needed his feet chopped off (thank goodness you can't see it) in order for the seat to go down far enough to allow the canopy to sit. I had to shorten and thin the control column for the pilot and chop off his feet too! He's a bit of a short bottom now, but at least the canopy will close!

brings new meaning to the term; "footloose and fancy-free".....:)

That aircrew will really add to your build - nice.

What are the PJ productions stuff like Dave? I'm thinking about them for a future build, albeit their wee 1/72 cousins..

Cheers,

Dermot

Thanks Dermot. The PJ aircrew are very nice indeed, lovely casting and great details. In 1/48 anyway! I'm sure 1/72 would be just as good!

A little bit done today, not much. I had a look at the canopy and was not happy with the seal so off it came, sanded off the glue and re-attached. Looks better now so will leave to dry for a good 24 hours. Because the elastic bands were still on, i couldn't attach the fuselage together. But i did add the tail fins:

And made a 'mock up' of how the jet will look. Wings and horizontal stabilisers are just sitting in place, no glue yet!

This is going to be a big diorama!

I'll leave you with this:

Great progress Dave. It can go together pretty quickly at times. The video is great, quite a few to watch tomorrow night while I get on with mine

More done today. First step was to mask off the canopy. Took me 3 goes to get the thing to seal to a satisfactory standard!!

Then i attached the forward section to the rear fuselage. As this was drying, i broke out the carrier deck and made a start. My word, what a big bugger it is! Much larger than i had anticipated.....

The sections went together easily enough, with some heavy duty pegs to get the seal nice and tight. The rectangular gap is where the blast deflector will go. To give an idea of size:

Yep, that's two 1/48 F-14's, with room for a third!

A few shots of the base of the deflector:

The bit that actually rises up is under construction. More photos of this in the next update. I then returned to the jet and tidied up the fuselage joint. I like to add a small bit of filler here as it is easier to tidy up, but this is not essential, just a personal preference:

Also, the Royale Resin wheels turned up and they look great!

Finally for today, a shot of the half completed jet and the carrier deck:

Bloody big!
