1/48 F-14A, VF-84 'Cat shot, Desert Storm, 1991

Thanks mate. Just doubting what scheme to go for now!

I don't want to deter anyone from doing what they originally planned, is your VF-84 scheme one of the high-vis jets? Mine is completely grey, so I'd say that alone would be more than enough variety...

Not all all mate, i was doubting it before i put the thread up! But no, you're right, a CAG and a 'line' jet of the skull 'n bones would look the part!

Good choice both of you. I really liked the TPS sceme for VF-84 with the low demarcation line on the nose. There are some very nice choices on the Afterburner sheet.

I'm pretty sure the "Hip" was shot down by VF-1's CAG bird, the one that's in the recent VF-1 release.

For what it's worth the Jolly Rogers high-vis schemes are real eye-catchers IMO. The Black Lions high-vis schemes also look good but my vote goes for the 'skull 'n bones'. :)

Two VF-84 birds...perfect!

I'm planing to finish mine in the VF-103 TPS during OIF  I know it has been build before a hundred times, but I don't have one and I just love that scheme.

Can't await to see your Cat on the deck!!!

Great scheme, that's also on my 'to do' list! Look forward to seeing it.

Thanks, hope I can do it justice!

hmmmm - looks like the jolly rogers are going to be popular...my excuse for doing one of my three F14's is that I want to build at least one aircraft from the Nimitz as featured in 'The Final Countdown'

...but 1/72nd....

btw - go check out the orders of the day for the answer to your question about great minds.....

Thanks for all the interest thus far chaps. Will hopefully make a start next week. I'm away for a few days and hope to finish (or nearly finish) a current MH-60 project tomorrow.

Cheers

Now I understand where all the 1/48 kits on the market are !!!

Looking forward to see your build Dave, judging from your previous tomcats this will be great.

Thanks Giorgio, hope i can make it look halfway decent!

I am fond of a F-14 kit

Dave you're going to be busy, but we know you're up to the challenge!

I'll be interested to see how this comes out as I might have a go at this one my self at some point.

Phil

Thanks Phil, i'll do my best!

Right folks, finally made a start on my first 'cat this morning! Started off with adding gun vents, ladder doors and steps to the front fuselage. The gun vents on the machine i'm making, Bu no 162692, were the old style (like a grill). The part from the kit fitted very poorly, perhaps i trimmed too much off. Some filler will be needed to fix this.

I then moved onto the cockpit. As i'm putting aircrew in the jet, i'm just using the kits cockpit which, in all fairness, isn't bad at all, not as good as the Aires or Blackbox resin examples, but very good for a plastic kit. A quick build up and paint later, this is how it looks:

IMG_1403.jpg

I added the canopy jettison handles from parts found in the spares box. Next, i moved onto the main fuselage. Added the wheel wells and beaver tail, stuck together and let it dry.

IMG_1395.jpg

As that was drying, i started work on the air intakes. A quick paint and weather followed. By this stage, the main fuselage was dry enough to allow me to start work on the intake ramps. I hate these things! I normally add FOD covers to save all the pain, but couldn't do that in this case! Hasegawa provide the ramps as they would be seen in supersonic flight (fully extended- http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-detail-airintake-07.htm ) which would not be seen on takeoff so i had to modify them slightly. I chopped off all the raised detail on the longer part and shortened the rear actuator ramp by about 3mm to get the correct configuration- http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-detail-airintake-02.htm. Once done, the rear ramps were stuck on and left to dry.

While that was drying, i painted (very roughly) and built up the TF30 engines:

I also assembled the tail fins:

Pylons:

and ordnance.

IMG_1405.jpg

Going for a full load of 4x AIM-54 Phoenix, 2x AIM-7 Sparrow's and 2x AIM-9 Sidewinders, all from an Academy kit. (This was the standard configuration in the very early days of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, but this then usually reverted to 2x Phoenix, 2 or 3 Sparrow and 2 Sidewinder )

Next i moved onto the wings. Assembly was easy enough but Hasegawa have not included all the hinges for the flaps. Four more are needed on top.

Same story below:

IMG_1410.jpg

I'll come to that when i'm next building. A look at the PJ Productions resin pilots:

IMG_1408.jpg

Think i'll use the chap with the checklist as the RIO and the chap with the mask as the pilot. Here are their GRU-7 ejection seats:

IMG_1411.jpg

So back to the intakes. The ramps had dried by this stage so i decieded to crack on and get the intakes attached. Unfortunately, they do not fit as part of the landing gear assembly gets in the way. To overcome this, one must cut a bit out of the intake in order for it to fit:

IMG_1404.jpg

Not very neat, but it won't be seen anyway. So after that was done on both sides, i glued the intakes in place on the fuselage:

IMG_1412.jpg

and yes, all that tape is essential!!

Also added the beaver tail and engines:

Finally for today, i returned to the cockpit. Inserted the front wheel well, 'pit and closed the fuselage up. Then added the nose cone, rear cover (behind the RIO's office) and the two covers for the front and aft control panels:

Phew! Quite a good bit of work in 7 hours! Feels odd to be back on fast jets after having built 5 helicopters on the bounce!

I'll leave you with this:

More to follow.
