1/48 F-14A, VF-84 'Cat shot, Desert Storm, 1991

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Well i've been looking forward to this group build for some time now! Was hard to decide what to do first. Have a few to choose from....

Decided my first entry will be in VF-84 'Jolly Rogers' markings during Desert Storm, 1991.

The kit:

The aftermarket: (Fightertown decals, master brass pitot tube, PJ productions pilots. Have also ordered some Royale Resin weighted wheels.)

The piece de resistance (said in a French accent of course) is this:

Skunkworks Nimitz deck section. A bloody big kit in itself!

Some of the references for this build:

Should hopefully end up like this:

(these images are not mine, i'm using them for reference only)

Will have a full load of missiles, ready to shoot down the Iraqi Migs that never came the F-14's way. (Spare a thought for the poor Mi-8 that did though!)

So, cue the music...

put on the dvd and strap yourselves in!!

MUCH more to follow.

Wasn't the MiL Mi-8 shot down by the gun rather than missile?

Anyway good luck with the build, the flight deck aspect looks interesting. I made the verlinden 1/72nd one many years ago and it does make for an iteresting diorama.

Almost certain it was downed by an AIM-9 from a VF-1 jet.

Thanks for the well wishes, looking forward to getting stuck in!

48th for you also?

Yeah, Hasegawa 1:48 kit, same boxing, with the Skunk Modelworks catapult base, in VF-84 markings. I'm using the Afterburner Decals sheet for a 1986 cruise, though, and the only other aftermarket I'm using (not counting missiles, I'll probably just raid the spares box for those) is the Eduard cockpit set, though I may also raid the spares box for a slightly different pilot or RIO figure, haven't decided yet.

Very nice indeed. We can have a little competition between us then! Your modelling skills are probably well beyond mine i dare say!

Thanks... Indeed! May the best 'Cat win... Kind of you to say that, but yours are probably better than mine. I look forward to seeing your build, best of luck!

I'm a bit of an amateur! I might change my decal option on the 'cat shot now!

Likewise, and good luck from me!

I'm thinking of maybe swapping the VF-84 'A' model and making an Operation Enduring Freedom VF-213 'D' model, all bombed up and ready to fly over Afghanistan.

Only reason i'm thinking this that there is another VF-84 'cat shot being done by Sabre Days, so maybe a bit of variety!

What do you think?
