Dave Fleming
Of the original HI-Tech range, only the weapons sets were really worth the 'Hi-Tech' parts - the down side being that those can only be built with the HI Tech fins etc.

It's already a nice kit but the enhanced cockpit parts and, especially, the unspatted undercarriage legs really moved it up a few notches. I've got 3! I'm fairly sure there were 2 different weapons sets? John

JohnT
Overall, I'd say it's all a bit of a non event. Apart from the Gnat, Valiant & Skyhawk, there's nothing there new or retooled to tempt me to spend my hard earned. I'm personally disappointed to see yet more done to death already subjects like Spitfires, Mustangs & BF-109s but, I'm enough of a realist to understand the obvious commercial reasoning behind those releases. Sorry Airfix but, you won't be getting much out of me in 2012!! Guess I must be getting fussy in my old age. Just as well I've got a stack of re-releases to work on!! I think I'd have to agree. As a boy I can recall the days when you went into Woolies or the local HBS and found that yet again Airfix had produced a model of an aircraft or subject that I knew little of. I think - though stand to be corrected - that they did many "firsts" e.g. Fielser Storch WW1 tank Stormovik Pe2 Aichi Val and Dinah (maybe a Japanese manufacturer beat them to it) Mossie Typhoon Mig 15 He 177 Sunderland and more ok they were pretty crude by today's standards but they fired the imagination and certainly didn't attract the comment "not another spitstang 109"
tangerine_sedge
Any chance of some more info on the new paints? Do they list them simply by Humbrol No. or RLM No or both? Any mention of sets? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see a return to the concept of the old Humbrol Authentics, as long as they are properly researched.Steve. techniquest
The MiG-29 is the old tool with new decals. The Valiant parts are to convert the bomber kit to a PR or Tanker variant. Decals are also included. Thanks for the info. Shame about the Mig-
John
I think the new list shows, once again, that there's a lot of constructive thinking going on in Margate! I lost my bet about a new Typhoon, but I'll happily carry that over to 2013. I didn't see the Skyhawk coming but, given the Falklands 30th, it's a good move - I think the only other "B" Skyhawks were the Fujimi kits, and they're not too common at the moment. The Swordfish floatplane was a banker, and the Spitfire 22 is one that I will buy several of - and I expect we can look for a Spitfire 24 and maybe a Seafire 47 in the not too distant! I like the 1/48th scale modern British army stuff too - I suspect I'll be buying a few of those. John
carlstavros
Nice to see a few of the older kits get released such as the Harriers, personally I think it's a good thing that there aren't too many new 1/48 releases as it's going to work out expensive enough with the Merlin & Lynx's! I presume other older kits could be released at a later date without being in the catalogue? Was the Lightning in last years list to be re-released this year? Cheers, Carl. maudesman
Hi all.... Found my new airfix catalouge waiting on my door mat when i got home...... Flicked through it....... Saw the MK22 spit...... Wish airfix would do a 72nd FR47! Spent enough on CMR and JAYS MODELS.... Need something easy to build! Well still to build! :-O :-( As for the F51 Mustang, just bought the italeri kit off ebay, as wanting to build Korean war version! Damn you airfix! LOL Would it be a better kit? So much so little time!

Thanks for this, that sounds very promising, I can think of a few of them I'll be looking for. I wonder if you might check the RLM nos for Hu248 & 249. In theory, Himmelblau should be RLM 78 & Sandbraun should be RLM 79, if thats so & they've got well matched shades then. Found some more info with pictures HERE Hope its only a mix up in the catalogue. Steve. Edited December 31, 2011 by stevehnz
jaw
As far as I am concerned a very poor and disappointing selection - certainly as far as those of us who 'do' 1:48 aircraft kits. Nothing new at all! And why do they persist in ever more Spitfires, Mustangs and Bf109's! At least there could be interesting kits from other manufacturers such as the MPM Firefly. So Airfix will not be doing very well from me either. John
Bobski
Very happy with that list. Although they aren't as good as more modern kits, the re-release of the Harriers in 1/48th is a welcome one (I'll probably be doing a couple of SHARs) and the modern British Army vehicles in 1/48th is also a good sign. The Lynxes, Merlin and the Daring will all be on my list as well. It should be noted that Airfix announced much of this last year as a combined 2011/2012 release list, so there was never going to be a massive amount more (well, other than in 1/72). Combine that with the inevitable delays that come with these things over the last 12 months and I think it's a fair enough list. With the ever-increasing quality of Airfix's releases over the last 12 months and a good selection of new kits to come, yet again Airfix tops my list of "wants". So Airfix will not be doing very well from me either. John I am also a little disappointed there are no new aircraft in 1/48. However, I already have plenty of kits in the stash and have yet to buy the Seafire XVII. I may also be tempted by Swordfish, even though I build little in 1/72, so Airfix will still be getting my money. Also, I have very few kits which I have bought and built in the same year so a "dry" year is disappointing but not the end of the world.
ChrisL
Another odd new thing at the back of the catalogue is "Clear", a 125ml bottle of "thin clear varnish that goes on clear and stays clear. Humbrol Clear dry's [sic] to a low gloss finish, a higher gloss finish can be achieve [sic] by applying further thin coats". Has Humbrol bought the formula for Klear now it's no longer available in the UK (the original formulation at least)? Their regular matt/satin/gloss cote varnishes and their spray varnishes are still in the catalogue too.
