609 Sqn codes

So I've applied Xtradecal's 30" codes, but wonder if the brush strokes of the individual letters need to be "beefed up" or do they look fine as is - what are some opinions? Aircraft is a Mk I Spitfire Bob time frame.

Hi Jack

As i said in the 303 sq question, BoB codes vary quite a lot, both in 'font' and thickness, so best to work from a photo.

EDIT - http://elearning-phys.uni-sofia.bg/~a_tzon...e%20109%20E.htm

a few BoB pics here, note almost complete lack of uniformity of code letter size and style!

Do you have a photo of the plane in questions? That is the decider on this one I'm afraid.

PS - I really should find better things to do....

609-squadron-spitfireLG.jpg

if this IS the same plane note that it's quite an old Spit, having smaller 40" upperwing roundels as initially applied and considerable wear to the wing root. As well as the gas warning triangle position.

Other will be able to fill in more info ....oh, hang on,

Nice Spit, look forward to seeing this one finished. What brand of paint did you use?

Troy - the Warmwell set of photos are the ones I've mostly been looking at. Particularly this one:

bd1.jpg

To me it appears the lettering is as wide as each individual colour on the fuselage roundel, (or is the perspective of the photo misleading in this?)

I've found no photos of N3280 and have arrived at the "E" code from extrapolating a few entries of the squadron's logbooks.

Rob - for longest time I have been using Tamiya's acrylic paints, but lately been running out so have been trying some other brands. The dark earth is from Life Color Paints while the dark green is Model Master. The underside is my own mixture mostly Tamiya white and yellow, but a few drops of Prussian and Sky blue from Andrea.

The build log is here

Jack

'I've found no photos of N3280 and have arrived at the "E" code from extrapolating a few entries of the squadron's logbooks.'

Jack

I recently posted a request for a code for a particular 609 sqn aircraft and was wondering, as you seem to have access to the squadron's logbook, if you could try and find it out for me. I'm looking for the code of N3231 as flown by P/O M E Staples from RAF Warmwell on the 7 Oct 1940. He was shot down (but bailed out successfully) and his Spitfire crashed near the village in Dorset where I grew up (in the 1960/70/80s).

Kind regards

Hutch

Hutch - yes, I saw your original request a while back but did not respond as I could not find a definite code. I don't have access to the squadron's logbooks, but I found a few excerpts from them by doing online searches.

There is FilePhotoService in the UK that can provide you with digital copies of materials from the National Archives, but there is a fee of course. There are no guarantees, as it has been pointed out to me most time logbook entries usually just have serial codes named but not the squadron codes.

Best I can do for you is provide my working list of 609 codes. Compare them to the aircraft flying that day (or that week?) in question and eliminate the individual codes that N3231 could not be. Another approach is to find the aircraft serial that was damaged/destroyed a day or two before N331 arrived at 609, or conversely the aircraft that replaced Staples destroyed craft. It is possible they shared the same individual code.

Jack

I am building a Tamiya 1/48 R6690 as flown by Dundas, (Aeromaster decals.) I have various depictions of the aircraft showing Rotal propeller, but it is stated to be a Mk.I. What is the correct prop and did this aircraft have the fishtail exhausts? I have the Ultracast Rotol prop, so I hope the depictions are correct.

It is possible they shared the same individual code.

regards,

Jack

I am the grandson of Spitfire Ace of the Battle of Britain, 609 Squadron Pilot Sgt. Alan Norman FEARY (742301). I am compiling a list of the 609 Squadron codes. I see how passionate you all are about this subject I was hoping for some help to discover the missing codes. The linked document lists the Serial Number of every Spitfire the 609 Squadron was issued during WWII with the corresponding known Squadron codes. The link supplied allows editing of the document so please be sure of your source before adding information to it and please don't remove information you consider incorrect, just add a comment why you think it is wrong and I will review the evidence. I am hoping with enough help to fill in the majority of missing codes. My grandfather died in Spitfire Mk IIa N3238 so I am particularly keen to learn that aircrafts Squadron code, I have been searching for it for quite a while now. Of course anyone that helps is more than welcome to use the document as a reference.

I`d say that the letters need beefing up myself.

I hope that yours is a different PR-E,......for this one has a different camouflage pattern, the fuselage roundel has a small centre,....also note the small upper wing roundels with the anti gas patch and check out the scuff marks on the wing root!

Here are some more;

Hi Tony, nice looking 609 Spitfire you've got there!

Yes, the one I researched/built flew in September 1940, as piloted by Canadian Alfred Keith “Skeets” Ogilvie.

Jack

Jack, that’s a cracking bit of research you’ve done there.
I’m slowly building all the main aircraft 609 flew in 1/72 and was going to skip the MkII as I didn’t have any codes or service numbers, now I’ll add one to the list 👍🏻
