OzH
Well its December and I've broken my 2011 New Years resolution - That was, not to start any new kits until I'd finished off all the other WIP's!! - I lasted 11 months, so not bad! I picked this kit off Ebay a month or two ago, opened the box and had to go for it... Found the Montex masks, inner an outer, on the A2Z website and Ali dispatched with his normal zest, I had them only a couple of days later... So, started it about two weeks ago and then remembered to take some photo's, so here's the interior, OOB apart from Eduard seat belts Needs a bit of matt black on the back of the instrument panel and some dull coat, but otherwise ready to seal up... I have to confess to knowing very little about the aircraft, I have seen in the FAA archive a piece about them being used by the Royal Navy in WWII and a couple of articles on this website (and tonyot's lovely model) about AR720 spotting that the Bismark had left port.... I would like to build a Navy Maryland and would like to do something in the Temperate Sea Scheme, EDSG/DSG over Sky as depicted in the FAA website... but I'm not sure that they were ever repainted in this scheme.. not bothered about what era of WWII, just as long as it happened... Can anyone help with this? Photographic evidence is always good (but normally as rare as rocking horse poo), but any advice would be useful... Thanks in advance... AndyC
I'm sure there was an article on the Maryland in either SAMI or MAM and a pic of a RN machine - I'll see if I can drag it out somewhere unless somebody else beats me to it Andy

tonyot
Hiya Oz, I`m liking your Maryland so far, keep up the good work! I did an article about the naval Maryland which went looking for the Bismark in an old issue of MAM and here is my rendition of the FM kit in 1/48th scale if this is of any use to you for reference purposes?; I did the underside in Sky without roundels but since then I`ve found that the aircraft most likely had A Type roundels under the wing tips. There is a photo in Sturtivants Sqns of the FAA which shows this aircraft later in its career and it looks to have a third darker colour applied over the usual camouflage , but it is hard to tell, as well as the code letter `T'. If you PM me with your e mail address I can send you a photo of another naval Maryland circa 1944. All the best Tony O Edited December 17, 2011 by tonyot
OzH
Not done as much as I had hoped over the Christmas period, but hey ho.... Here's an update... Engines built, 29 parts per engine... good fun!? The nose glazing is on, this comes in two parts, dome on the front and then the piece behind. This second piece was to wide for the fuselage, I had to pin it in in order to get to fit, but looks OK I think... Other components are coming on, lots of test fitting, filing, filling, filing, more filling and more filing (you get the picture...!)... more to come as well me thinks!! tonyot
Looking good Oz, are you doing the Hatston aircraft that we discussed and have you settled on a colour scheme? To say that you had trouble with the nose glazing, you cannot tell and those Montex masks look excellent, I may get some for my Maryland if I ever get around to doing it! Looking forward to seeing this one finished, Tony O
Maxidad
Cockpit looks wonderful, but all the rest of that fabulous interior has disappeared when you sealed it up. Shame.
Navy Bird
Oz, What a beautiful job you are doing on this Maryland! Fantastic! I love to see the more unusual subjects that pop up here every now and then. Can't wait to see more progress! Cheers, Bill PS. It seems you really are a Wizard! The Montex Masks are good, but I have had to replace the nose masks as they started to peel off after a while on the bendy bits, so, either don't apply them until you are ready to paint, or (as I did) use them as stencils for your own masks - I used Tamiya tape... Silver Fox
Brilliant work. The engines look great after all your work, much better than the plastci ones in the SH Oxford.
OzH
Paint is on.... I wanted a nice faded finish but I may have gone a little OTT, will have to darken it with a few wahes! Edited February 15, 2012 by OzH
