I was thinking the same, so far I have found 2 sources

model alliance do sets

http://www.theaviationworkshop.co.uk/index...products_id=182

and xtradecals have just releases a set

http://www.modelhobbies.co.uk/shop/xtradec...99-p-38915.html

there is also the tiger squadron set that covers se5as spits lightnings, tornados and phantoms

http://www.modelhobbies.co.uk/shop/xtradec...80-p-25272.html

tho why they done a 111 squadron sheet without lightnings is a bit daft to me

I think 56 did fly the F6 but only converted off the earlier marks after they gave up the Firebirds team. The conversion onto the F6 was in 1975 and the Arrows were in place by then.

Mark - the 1/48 Airfix F1 model has Firebird decals which I won't be using - any use to you? Call it a wee pressie of Santa !

regards to both

Hi John, You are correct, 56 Sqn certainly did use the F6, but well after the "Firebirds" display team had disbanded by 1963. They were the last RAF "front-line" display team - costs were just too much even in them days! By the time they were flying the F3 - with red and white chequered tails the Yellow Jacks were flying Gnats - and these would soon be painted red - but thats another story!

56 Sqn markings for the F1a Lightning are very different from those used on the F6, so aren't appropriate here. Mark will need to use those from the original F6 kit. I have some spares Mark, if you need them.

Were there any lary, bright schemes at all for the F.6?

5 Sqn's XR770 was about the most colourful F6 with it's red fin/spine/wing leading edge's. It's an option in the latest Airfix release. Other examples were: - 11 Sqn XR725/XS903 black fin/spine, XR753 23 Sqn white fin/spine, XS897 74 Sqn black fin and the three 5 Sqn jets (XR724/XR770/XS903) with the shark mouths.

If you build 74 Squadron, most if not all of their aircraft were NOT fitted with the ventral tank guns; this is also true for early deliveries to 5 Squadron. I had wanted to do an as-delivered NMF 5 Squadron aircraft with my "stash" F6, but installed the tank parts with the guns, so changed to DG/DSG over NMF instead!

Not that it matters that much in modelling terms but initial deliveries to 5 Sqn were actually F3a's (Interim F6). Identical to the F6 but no provision for o/w tanks. These were converted later to full F6 standard. Regarding 74 Sqn Lightnings - these were delivered to RAF Tengah and there are plenty of pic's with these with o/w tanks. Most photo's I've shown has them in a shiny state! These would make a nice model with Alclad, and a shame that the new Airfix kit didn't have these decals - the cannon less tank is of course incled in the kit.
