Pat C
Just wondering whether anyone has a foolproof method for removing masking tape residue from canopies? I work so slowly that I always end up leaving tape on the canopy for a long time and even Tamiya tape leaves a bit of a sticky residue. Nick Belbin
I would use lighter fuel and cotton buds. Take your time; the residue will need to soften by absorbing some of the fuel and don't rub to hard to avoid scratching the canopy. Nick
Pat C
Thanks Nick - doesn't fog the canopy then? If lighter fluid would work do you think white spirit would do the job? Was worried about that fogging but could test on a spare I suppose. Pat
modelmaker
WD 40 on a cotton bud is how I do it, same reason as yourself, too slow!
AdAstraMasks
Pat, If you can get "Goo Gone" in the U.K. it is made for the purpose (removing gooey residues) and doesn't react with paint/Future etc. It also has a pleasant orange citrus smell so your models will smell good enough to eat . Pat C
Thanks for the responses chaps - Goo Gone is on Amazon UK so I might invest in some. Pat
Nick Belbin
Lighter fluid won't fog the canopy – white spirit is too fierce and will attack the plastic. Never heard of Goo Gone so would be interested to hear your findings. Nick

chaddy
I asked a similar question a month or so ago. The recommendation was Goo Gone. I bought some and it worked perfectly. It removed the residue of 20 year old drafting tape from an unfinished model very easily and very quickly. And no nasty smells.
gcn
I'd be careful of using IPA if you have futured the canopy as the IPA can dissolve the future.
Pat C
Well got myself a small bottle of Goo-Gone and was very pleased with the results - thanks chaps!
Dermo245
I found this thread when I searched online for 'how to remove tape residue from canopy'. Had a little sticky leftover from Tamiya tape on the cockpit of the Seahawk.....to be honest, I may have left it on a little longer than usual. Anyway, tried a little WD-40 on a Q-Tip and it worked a treat - thanks all! Dermot
Nigel Heath
I used B&Q's Terpentine Substitute on this sticky canopy without any adverse effects:
RudyBob
I had the same question. I used WD 40 a Q-Tip and I am happy that it worked for me. I had both so no extra expense. Thanks for the question and the replies
lasermonkey
I had the same issue last night with Tamiya Taoe that hadn't been on for very long, maybe a week or two, tops. Lots of residue left, which I hadn't encountered before. I tried using some more Tamiya tape to remove the residue and it worked very well indeed. It has to be worth a try, as it's not an extreme method and there's little chance of things going pear-shaped.
