Kev1n
...I wanna do one! Just watched the movie (again) and I have an airfix 1/72 scale sherman in the stash somewhere for this very idea...I have in mind a small diorama of oddball's sherman sitting in the bombed out building ready to give one of the tigers a kuta. What I want to know is; is the afx kit ok to use, what do I have to do to change it if not. I can scratchbuild all the added bits on the tank, like the loudspeaker, etc, and the building, but since I'm not usually an armour builder, thought I would check this out with the experts re the sherman itself Ta! ps Oh yeah - I have had a look around the net so lots of pics n things to refer to but wanted to ask anyway
dragonlanceHR
Those are the JNA M4A3E4 (wet stowage M4A3 VVS refitted with 76mm gun in a standard Sherman turret after WW2). I believe Airfix only does the M4, which has a totally different hull and transmission housing.
Kev1n
...which means what exactly? like I said, I'm not an armour builder so know absolutely zilch about sherman tanks, or any other tank for that matter
dragonlanceHR
...which means what exactly?like I said, I'm not an armour builder so know absolutely zilch about sherman tanks, or any other tank for that matter It means you want to build a Spitfire Mk.XIV using a Mk.I kit. Here is a late M4 drawing And this is M4A3(75)W Notice the 60deg vs 47deg front armor slope (glacis) and different engine decks. In the end, they're both Shermans. Maybe just adding a barrel extension and the loudspeaker to the Airfix kit will do? Edited December 5, 2011 by dragonlanceHR
Kev1n
ok that helps......ty for the pics, so I could make some mods to the afx kit and it would be close enough I guess
Wayne rc
Those are the JNA M4A3E4 (wet stowage M4A3 VVS refitted with 76mm gun in a standard Sherman turret after WW2).I believe Airfix only does the M4, which has a totally different hull and transmission housing. Thats pretty much it, not sure about, the ref to the turret, the Shermans in the film may have been nabbed from some army that up gunned them postwar, ie Israel the oddball turret is the same as the airfix kit, but the usual turret 75mm with short gun on the M4A3(W) has an oval hatch for the loader, the trans cover on the Airfix is the early 3 piece that has 2 vertical ribs. With a bit of work with some milliput you may get a one piece cover. To get the different glacis angle, remove the hatch detail on glacis and a new roof where the drivers hatches are. The M4A3 series had bigger hatches, the reason for this and the extra turret hatch is obvious because they had a reputation for catching fire easily. Hence the British nickname 'Ronson' and the grim German nickname 'Tommy fryer' also the hull rear is different, and the engine hatches should have grill vents,I think your dio idea sounds good, remember that Oddball says in the movie, that the up gunning is just a big pipe to make it look like a 90mm...... And if you want to stay true to the movie study the Tigers... They are in fact T34's with fake sheet metal turrets and hulls, I think a good way to do this would be to get a 1/76 Tiger 1 and put T34/85 wheels and tracks on it, just make new axels for the T34 wheels after removing the Tiger axels. Brass rod ? You can do it, a bit of plasticard and putty and a prayer some drilling and scribing... Oh yes don't forget to splatter some pink paint on the Tigers bottom, (oddball's paint shells) lol !
dragonlanceHR
Thats pretty much it, not sure about, the ref to the turret, the Shermans in the film may have been nabbed from some army that up gunned them postwar, The tanks are as previously mentioned, the movie was filmed in Yugoslavia, US military aid, including armor ( M4, M18, M36, M32, M47 etc), was delivered from 1952-1958 and the "strafing Thunderbolt" is YAF Soko 522 trainer. The tank is a US postwar mod. Except the loudspeaker and M2 mount.
Pete in Lincs
Don't forget the length of drainpipe to fit over the gun. Woof Woof! Love that film. Pete

The T34 is about 3/4 the size of a Tiger, so the wheels would look weirdly spaced.. I reckon boxing in a T34 with card and putting a Tiger turret and details on it..
