Ok. Here goes. The first of my trio of Mustangs(for now).

N332 (Formerly 45-11471) Race No.9. The 'Maytag' Mustang at Reno and Las vegas 1965. N332 later became, after much modification, N51UR 'Stiletto' Race No.84 and won the 1984 Reno race flown by Skip Holm.

Hasegawa kit (old tool), Draw Decals, and Life Color acrylic French Brown thinned with H2O and airbrushed and coated with several light coats of Klear. Mods to kit were: removal of guns and ejector chutes, underwing pylons and a fairing covering up the rear seat. N332 had a 'wet wing' meaning the extra fuel tanks replace the weapons bays. I also made an attempt to modify the kit propeller to represent the post-war Hamilton Standard square tipped version and rescribed some of the panel detail.

So. This is the second of my P-51s for this GB. Again 1/72nd.

Academy P-51C kit. Decals by Flightline (in the US). The only kit mods were to the wing by filling, rendering all gun ports and chutes. The rear 'quarter light' window panels are painted over as per the real aeroplane.

The model depicts NX1202 owned by Paul Mantz who bought the aircraft from a scrap dealer. It was entered in the 1946 Bendix Trophy Races from LA to Cleveland Ohio and despite some issue with the undercarriage won the the race. N1202 went through a number of colour scheme detail changes and a race number change to '60' at various points of its career. The airframe is now on show at the NASM I believe. AnotheC model that Paul Mantz had was N1204 and this one is still airworthy and owned by Kermit Weeks and is in the markings 'Ina the Macon Belle'of the 332nd FG, the famed 'Tuskegee Airmen'.

The sharp eyed of you may notice that the 'D' undercart doors are open in a couple of views and closed in another. Studying photos of the P-51B series the doors seemed to operate slightly different to the D model where the doors drooped down as hydraulic pressure bled off. I understand the B had a different system and worked independently from the flaps. In the photos I noted that the flaps were generally up and the D doors were either up or down! So I chose both during my build and decided to settle for the down position.

Crappy Airfix 1:72 build. Paint is Motip Primer, Motip Aluminium Wheel Spray, Modelmaster Olive Drab and Revell Aqua for the rest. Completely OOB except for the stand which is bits of sprue formed and stuck together by heating and then some CA. Built this as a bit of a practice run for the Dragon 32nd one (and to clear the kit from the stash)

My fourth for this GB(And possibly final). 1/144th Platz kit of P-51D of the 55th FS, 20th FG, Kingscliffe 1944.

Straight from the box. Come on, you didn't really think I open up the engine and add lots of scale detail did you!!!????

IMG_4394.jpg

IMG_4395.jpg

It was fiddly enough trying to add the main leg covers on let alone try anything smart with the kit. I may have a couple more pics to add later.

IMG_4455.jpg

IMG_4457.jpg

The sharp eyed will note that these new pics show yellow tips to the prop that I'd forgotten to do when photographing the earlier shots.

RNZAF 1 Squadron TAF 1954/5

Formed as Territorial units to keep a reserve of trained pilots the four TAF squadrons were each issued with 6 P-51D-25-NTs from a reserve of 30 machines delivered in 1945 and stored for 6 years. By 1954/5 they had been repainted in High Speed silver and had been adorned with area related coloured bars. As such they were mainly used at weekend and at annual Armament Practice Camps and remained remarkably clean.

Kit:- 1/48thTamiya F-51D,

Decals:- Ventura

Additions:- Ultracast propellor and flaps, Eduard cockpit set.

"Cripes A' Mighty

A Tribute Warbird

I've been wanting to build Cripes A' Mighty for some time. It was my original intention to build Maj George Preddy's mount. However I ended up finding this modern warbird

1279381.jpg

So as my tribute to Maj Preddy I have recreated the flying tribute.

Maj George E Preddy

February 5, 1919–December 25, 1944

George_Preddy-1.jpg

At the time of his death Maj Preddy was the sixth highest scoring American ace with a total of 26.83 enemy air-to-air kills, this made him the highest scoring P-51 pilot of WWII. Injured in the far east he, after his recovery, was reassigned to the 352nd Fighter Group in the European Theatre. The group flew out of RAF Bodney, England and Asch Airfield, Belgium. On August 6, 1944, Maj Preddy claimed six German Luftwaffe fighters in a single sortie. Thus leading to his famous pose of holding up three fingers on each hand.

Preddy was killed by "friendly fire" on the morning of Christmas day, 1944. As commanding officer of the 328th Fighter Squadron, 352nd FG, he was leading a formation of 10 Mustangs. They had been patrolling for about three hours, when they were directed to assist in a dogfight already in progress. Preddy destroyed two Messerschmitt Bf 109s, before being vectored to a lone Focke-Wulf FW 190, strafing Allied ground forces south-east of Liege, Belgium. As the FW-190, Preddy and two other Mustangs passed over the Allied front line at tree-top height, a US Army anti-aircraft battery (believed to be part of the 430th AA Battalion, XIX Corps), fired at the FW-190 and missed, but hit all three P-51s. Preddy's aircraft hit the ground at high speed and a low angle, which caused it to break up into many pieces. Preddy had no chance of surviving the crash.

Maj Preddy was buried at the Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint Avold, France. Later, his bother William, a P-51 pilot with the 503rd Fighter Squadron, 339th Fighter Group, was buried alongside him.

Kit: Tamiya
