RAF in Devon and Cornwall (mostly WWII)

My site detailing the RAF bases in Devon and Cornwall has just had a major update. All bases now have full unit listings (subject to checking) and I have made a good start on pictorial references and modelling notes (to be continued). The aim is to get together enough information to build 1/72 models of a good cross-section of units, types and bases. So far I have built just 3 models which will be on show at Yeovilton on Saturday 18th October.

It can be found at http://www.hrmtech.com/SIG/devcor.asp

Great stuff, my own stamping ground. Just a thought - you could consider adding Haldon airfield. Although it was mostly a (very small) field for the FAA the RAF took it over later in the war & 84 Gliding School ATC was there from August 1944 to June 1945.Now a golf course! Got some "Cornish" Shack photos, I'll dig/copy them out for you (although several have been published, mainly in Shack at War & Peace). And there's Upottery & Dunkeswell, the latter well known as a USN base but had a fair use post war with the RAF mainly as a RLG.

Bill

Hi Ross,

Nice site! Lots of potential there and very interesting!

Have a quick question.

A few years back I ventured down to Kernow with a group of freinds to visit a mate at the Cambourne School of Mining and he took us to Cligga Head to look at the rocks and minerals. We parked on an old abandoned airfield and walked down to the cliff section. What was the airfield???

Cheers

That was (& still is) Perranporth. Went gliding there a few years ago. Very interesting being aerotowed over the cliffs.......

Cheers,

Bill

FYI - I think Perranporth was up for sale (maybe sold) as a going concern last year.

I take the point about Haldon, Upottery & Dunkeswell having an RAF presence but I'm trying to stick to bases which had flying units permanently based there, although I have a photo of a Virginia at Haldon for trials of landing aids which is a tempting thought for a model - but then one also went to Exeter for a while and I know enough about that one to model it.

The whole project started as modelling research and just went out of control so I thought it worth sharing and collecting as much input as possible - on that basis I'd be glad of your 'Shack' photos if they can be loaded to the website without copyright issues, just an ackowledgement

Thanks and Regards,

Ross

Virginia at Haldon - mind boggling! Flew a T21 glider from there years ago & thought it a bit cramped! Photos no problem, just got to get up the loft & dig through the boxes (without being diverted).
