bexwh773
Hi ya Gang, Ive always had a soft spot for both the Grumman Hellcat & Wildcat, because of the work they did in the early war years, and as both MikeeW & GregB have both done the Hellcat (Mikes finished & Gregs just started) I thought Id go for a Wildcat, but was lucky enough to find a kit that had FAA markings in it so Bexy goes FAA World War 2 style and up comes the 1:32 Revell Martlet Mk5. I have to be honest, this kit is well detailed but its not the best fit around the cockpit tub or fitting the fuselage together The decals which I forgot to photo look very good too (next update will include a shot). Thanks for looking and please feel free to comment either good or bad Bex
CPNGROATS
Martlet/Wildcat...a significant a/c in either case....good start....an historically significant a/c all collections should feature an example.... Grumman Cheers, ggc

Tedfellows
So Bex, is this the next step? Lots of WW2 planes? You should be proper chuffed with that cockpit, it looks lovely! Adam

So Bex, is this the next step? Lots of WW2 planes? You should be proper chuffed with that cockpit, it looks lovely! Adam Adam, thank you I go through phases, earlier this year I built 3 WW2 Luftwaffe aircraft one after another and at the moment Im having a problem getting jets finished so Ive put them to one side for a while and then see where I end up again. Jim Thanks Jim hopefully you will now be prepared for the awful fit Todays efforts then, the lower glazing was fitted, the joke of a tail wheel was added, it looks like Mr. Revell forgot about it then chucked a circle of plastic in to get him out of the poo Right then, I had to start at the top rear of the fuselage behind the cockpit and work my way back, then once that was glued tightly with CA, I then glued the forward top finally finishing with the forward lower, where you can see a horrendous huge gap Photos then: Forward Lower: Forward Upper: Thanks for looking Bex
general melchett
Hi Bex , my God you're brave , that is an ancient kit and I well remember building one way back in the late sixties ( the US version) and finding it a horror back then when I didn't much care for things like filler, waiting for paint to dry and putting decals ( transfers lol) in the right place . Good start with the old beast , look forward to seeing the final article.Well done for taking her on. Cheers now, Andy
Murdo
Hi Bex, I made this kit a few months back... "First plane built for about thirty years" The fit problems might be caused by the U/C fit which a total PITA to get in place correctly but once it is might sort the problem. Ah... Have you already glued the fuselage together?
AnonymousDFB1
Okay, maybe I don't want this kit.
Murdo
Okay, maybe I don't want this kit. Nah... You should try it Mish. Apart from the very fiddly U/C I don't remember having any problems with it... (Sorry Bex. ) It's very cheap (for 1/32) and really not that bad. I certainly liked it anyway. I even used the kits' invasion stripe decals. The only thing I would suggest (and I regret not doing) is cutting out and off setting the control surfaces. IIRC the kit cost me about £16 from a model shop. Definitely worth getting and building.
mikeew
You're putting up a good fight Bex, but I would bin it if I were you, that looks like too much hard work . Go and get yourself a Trumpeter Wildcat - far easier to build! See. Edited September 23, 2008 by mikeew

Did you notice the wing construction Part 13 is bottom about face, nice of Revell to print the idiot guide wrong Yes Bex Sorry Bex, wasn't rubbing it in. I had a helluva job getting the U/C to fit and close the fuselage. It just suddenly seemed to "click" into place. Yikes!!! What's bottom about face about the wing? I just took it on face value... (Sorry, Destructions are long gone). Edited September 23, 2008 by Murdo
bexwh773
Yikes!!! What's bottom about face about the wing? I just took it on face value... (Sorry, Destructions are long gone). You build stage 11 & 12 which are the folding arms, then stage 13 says use stage 12 + wing part 46 except part 46 doesnt fit onto stage 12, its fit with stage 11 instead. So, stages 13 & 14 are printed wrong. So you need to add stage 11 with stage 13 then stage 12 with stage 14 contrary to the idiot guide I hope that makes sense Bex

Erwin
Great project. Watch out for sagging wings. The hinches in the kit are weak.Don't move it about to much or they will break. Best is to build it as fixed wings and reinforce it from the inside.

THanks for the tip Erwin Having taken an hour to work out the diagrams were wrong I gave up and just glued the wings together so they wont budge Bex

bexwh773
Wings are now on with only a very small gap requiring filler, which will be done shortly when I fill the rest of gaps. I also remembered to photo the decals and Ive also included a shot of the instructions which are printed wrong. Thanks for looking Bex Look at stage 13, you will see it says use stage 12, that should read stage 11, and the same for stage 14, it says stage 11, that should read stage 12.
