My Alclads have gone bitty!

Has anyone else had this? I was painting the bare metal sections of an F-15 yesterday and was rifling through my Alclads to find my trusty Jet Exhaust shade. WHen I found it and shook it up, I discovered that it had gone all bitty, the pigment wasn't mixing in and had a nasty gritty look to it.

On searching through the rest of my Alclads I found that four others had done the same, is it a shelf life thing?

Never had this and some of mine are 5 - 6 years old. Have you used cellulose thinners to dissolve them again?

I'm still using some of mine from the first incarnation of Alclad II not problems noticed. Must be something to do with storage or location.

You've not been eating biscuits near them with the lid off, have you? :wicked:

Some of my Alclad is around 3 years old, and as yet, no sign of any bits. I wouldn't have thought there was enough pigment in there to form clumps... perhaps it's something crystalising in there? :S

:hmmm: Storage in room temperature, like all the others. No biscuits consumed nearby, no Alcladdy bits :hmmm:

I think the ones that have done it are some of the older ones, maybe as much as three years since purchase but it's hard to recall. I have to go up to the Med Centre now, I will take a photo when I get back, to try and show you what I mean.

Jen, i've only had this happen once and it was to the Jet Exhaust shade.

Maybe a bad batch? I put it down to dampness in the cupboard, but the rest of the Alclads in there were fine.

I keep mine in the airing cupboard now and they've lasted a good 5 years as Greg says,

Hi Jen never had this happen to any of mine, but there was something on ARC about a bad batch getting through about 18 months ago but that might be across the pond only.some of mine are about 3 years old now ,& still OK.

I had the same thing happen with my bottle of Alclad Steel. Bitty and gritty as you describe, but I didn't bother doing anything with it, I just bought another bottle. I thought I must have left the lid slightly unsealed or something, which led it to coagulate, but after reading your post I think it must be something to do with the paint itself. I haven't had it happen to any others in my collection. Yet...

Mind you, it's such good stuff that I can live with the occasional bottle going off!

Cheers,

Dean

Alclad quoted me four-five year shelf life when I had a problem with some of the original batch a few years ago.

You also have to take into account the length of time the bottle was sitting on the shelf before you bought it.

is it the original Alclad and not Alclad II?? If so, I have had the same issue a year or so back. Tossed the bottle and use Alclad II exclusively now with no issues.

It was one of the first Alclad II bottles that I had a problem with.
