BigReg Posted September 9, 2008 Share Posted September 9, 2008 In 1970 cadets and staff of 2393 squadron excavated a Bf110 in Billericay Essex and the OS map is TQ69 and this became the title of the project. On Sep 7th 1940 Gerhard Granz and his gunner Willi Schuttle escorted some Do17s on a mission to bomb London. They were intercepted by the Big Wing lead by Douglas Bader. Bader's wingman was Sub Lt Richard Cork flying Hurricane LE O L and he had a dofight with Granz's 110 3M+BB bothe aircaft were damaged but Cork returned to base. Granz and Schuttle escaped by papachute and were captured by the home guard. Thirty years later, now Col, Granz returned to Essex to pick up the reduction gear and propellor blade of his aircraft and returned it to Germany where it was displayed at the helicopter school commanded by Granz. My build will be a diorama of the aircraft involved in 144 scale. The 110 is a Japanese capsule model, deconstruted and reassembeled and the Sweet Hurricane. BigReg Posted September 10, 2008 Author Share Posted September 10, 2008 Here is some progress from last night's work. The gun bay has been cut out and the guns, from Oz Mods, mounted. From the spares box comes Andy the Armourer - I think he contributes to this site! I changed the 110 donor kit and used the green one in this spectacularly boring shot you should see the control column, the instrumnet panel and gun sight - but as ints only about 1/3 of an inch its asking a lot of the camera! Sweet give you two kits in one, each has 2 canopies and foor landing lights on the sprues - but 1 model is grey or green plastic and the other in clear. I am using the clear one for this build to better show off the navigation lights. The model will be depicted refuelling so here is the Bowser. I have added the magazines for the cannon and the third seat as well as the radio gear. The Hurricanes have the instrument panels prepared and the seats from Aeroclub painted. The machine guns have been painted ready to be added to the starboard wing. Interviews were held last night and some of the characters have been identified. Don't forgrt these are about 1 cm high! BigReg Posted September 17, 2008 Author Share Posted September 17, 2008 A little more progress, the Bf110 has hac its undersides painted Hell Blau and a mist coat of green. I usually use rattle cans but for this project I've dug out the airbrush. Here it is closer - remember the span is less than 3"! And from the other side The Hurricanes are a slower they are shown here in primer to show up the work still required on the joins. Here is a close up of the cockpit Meanwhile the Hurricanes have been filled and the sky undersides painted To avoid the what colour are the undercarriage bays - here is one in silver and one in green! I use blu tack as it allows a tiny bit of feathering But getting some of the bits off afterwards are a bit of a pain. Next time will be decal time. The main markings for Granz's 110 have also gone on - a mixture of Myk decals and Aeroclub letters. I have tried placing the models in position for the diorama. The base has been painted and the grass added. The dispersal hut is in the paint shop. I have put on the backgrounds for the 110's badges. The small blob will have a black hand on it and the larger has a clown figure to go on it. I have been looking at the layout for the diorama The Hurricanes will be weathered tonight and as I messed up the starboard prop of the 110 I need to make a new one. The 110 is in Brugues, France and will take off about 15.00 hrs and will meet 242 squadron over Esssex The crew of Lt Granz and Corporal Schutle have their photo taken before the op. Here is the scene reproduced. At Duxford 242 squadron are at readyness The lead section will be Bader, Crowley Milling and Sub Lt Cork Cork's aircraft is being refuelled and rearmed. BigReg Posted October 17, 2008 Author Share Posted October 17, 2008 Here are the pictures of my diorama depicting the events of the afternoon of 7th September 1940 with a section of Hurricanes from 242 Sqn lead by Douglas Bader intecepted a raid over Hornchurch. In the ensuing dogfight Bader's wingman, Richard Cook, shot down a Bf110 piloted by Lt Gerhard Granz. 30 years later Air Cadets of Billericay Squadron dug up the remains of the 110. The diorama is based on actual photos of the 110 concerned. Here is Cork's aircraft And an overview of the entire Diorama The knife gives scale to the models The model Hurricanes are the Sweet 1/144 scale, the 110 is a japanese capsule model rebuilt, figures are a mix of 'MiniFigs' and prieser railroad people. The Bowser is by Matador models and the trolley acc is by Pavla. There is an etched metal bicycle leaning on the fence and that is a model rail accessory.
