A line up of Lightnings........

With the forthcoming bevy of Lightnings being issued - I got me a thinking about a representative line-up of all marks with a full range of squadron markings - and here's what I came up with initially......

F1 - 74 Sqn, F1a - 56 Sqn, F2 - 19 Sqn, F2a - 92 Sqn, F3 - 29 Sqn, F3a - 5 Sqn, F6 - 11 Sqn; Hopefully someone will bring out some T-bird conversions so we can have a T4 of 111 Sqn and a T5 of 23 Sqn.......

Then that leaves the second line units.....!!!

Bill,

I'd go for 92 as the F2 - the arrowhead marking they used in that scheme was far more attractive than the chequerboard they used later and 23 for the F3a (white fin)! As for the F3 surely 111Sqn (close call between that and 56). So many choices!

Well Wez..this is the first line -up...all of these will be in natural metal. You may have noted that I've chosen one aircraft from each of the RAF's front line Lightning squadrons..and as 29 only flew the F3 (and T5 of course) then I had to choose that squadron for the F3...likewside the F1 was only flown by 74 Sqn (though I seem to recall that 111 may have had one or two on strength to suppliment their F1a's.....

The second line up will include other options....and a few F3's will of course feature - these will include the colourful 56,74 and 111 Sqns and an F2 of 92 Sqn.

Then on to some of the camouflaged aircraft......of 19 & 92 Sqns (F2 hacks and F2a's) and 5 & 11 Sqns (F3& F6's).

That should take me up to the "grey" era - before I even think about the second line units!!!

Super stuff Bill. Go it.

Many years back I did a full line up of Airfix Lightnings, including some home made 'orrible balsa and plunge formed canopy two seater conversions. That was way back when natural metal Lightnings were all the rage. Your line up when complete will be really nostalgic - for me and I bet for a bunch of other folk too. I've long meant to do the same again - maybe yours will spur me on.

Didn't do 29 then, because they were still on Javelins. 5 Squadron were done, don't think 11 Sqn were (also Javelins ?). Had to have several Tigers of course because they in black tails, and 23 with white tails, were my 'local' F3 squadrons at Leuchars. A T4 with Tiger stripes and yellow T-bands had to be done, along with a red & white spine OCU beast. First F6 I saw was a 74 machine, just before they headed off from Leuchars for Tengah. Simple looking but v impressive when new and shiny, so that had to be modelled too. Nice large tiger stripes, nm spine and tail.

Also had a 111 Sqn machine with the black and yellow tail, and of course 56Sqn's over the top checkered fin scheme which finally called a halt to the whole thing.

Happy days.

I attempted something similar when I first got my hands on Modeldecal Sheet No 1 John!! I daresay I'll commence this "project" and may get a few done....

Just another thought..maybe its best to go with A squadron at a time! 111 or 56 would be good choices......F1a/F3/T4/T5 & F6 or maybe 92 Sqn with the F2/F2a & T4 (in Nat Metal & camo. there's half a dozen already!!!!)...even 5 or 11 would be challenging...Nat metal, Camo & umpteen grey variations!!!

Too many schemes! Not any kits out yet!!!!

Well Bill for me,,

A 74 Sqn T4

2nd Line-... would have to go with my old LTF unit when we formed with the British Egg Marketing Board logo on NMF F3's and T5's XS417 + the All grey XS458, All green XS452 in the mid 70's

Also a 226 OCU T5.

She was a pig to work on at the time but age and time bring to mind the happier occasions. Like seeing a vertical take off... ummm
