SR-53 details

Recommended Posts

Got hold of a Eastern Bloc copy of the Airfix 72nd scale Saunders Roe SR-53 some time ago but hit a blank wall trying to find much in the way of detail pictures. Found one of the instrument panel but that's about it, can anyone help or point me in the right direction? Always liked to look of them and would love to detail up what is a pretty basic set of parts.

Cheers chaps!

Wooksta; That book sounds pretty interesting, think I'll have a search on Amazon. Is there much in the way of detailed photos?

Jonathan; If you're willing to share I'd love to see them. What format are they on?

When it's closed up and built, there is little scope for detail. The airframe is clean. You'll need to hunt for some squared off decals for the serials. Mine needs re doing now, cos they yellowed.

Did think there would be little to see with the canopy shut but wanted to pose it open; the kit part is so poor I'll need to form a new one and adding some cockpit and undercarrige detail feels somehow 'right'.

Thanks for the tip on the decals, get the feeling the ones in my example are dead anyway ;)

Airfix needs to re-release this kit to go with their TSR2. Also this book has an history of the SR-53 and pictures British Experimental Turbojet Aircraft

Robert

Amen to that Robert, they'd look cracking together in any display! Seems to be a good chapter on the SR-53 there, getting a fair Amazon order sorted out again, ha ha.

They're all JPGs, I'll dig them out.

FWIW, a TSR.2 and SR.53 boxed set was floated around Humbrol, "Cosford Collection" or something.

That would be great thanks Jonathan.

Interesting to hear about the 'Cosford Collection', I always though the apperance of the Eastern Bloc kit ment Airfix no longer had the moulds for the SR-53.

You may want to look at Carmel Attard's article on building this kit. It includes drawings of the instrument panel.

Thanks for the link David, think that's the instruction sheet that was included with the Airfix kit. I'll post that photo I found of the instrument panel once I'm sober enough to find it and transfer it to Photobucket ;)

Ah, marquee season

While the Crowood book is probably you're best bang for the buck .... er.... pound, HPM Publications put out "The Saga of SR.53" in 2000. It's a card cover 64 page "pictorial tribute" in the X-planes profile series. The photos aren't reproduced as slick as the Crowood book, but there's plenty of back story to read if you're interested.

You will not find it on Amazon, there was a copy kicking around on a US bookstore site at £185, as the book is like rocking horse poo. As for pictures, there are only four and none of the cockpit, plus a set of 1-72 scale plans (cost me £60 when I managed to get my hands on it 3 years ago).

I would try to get hold of the HPM book as it has all you will need. I think I got mine from the Aviation Bookshop. If you're really stuck PM me and I'll try to sort out some copies for you.
