Airfix Gazelle

Recommended Posts

Morning folks,

This is probably the fastest build I've done in a long time, but it still took just over 2 months!!

This is the Airfix Gazelle from a starter set (no, I never used the paint!!) pretty much straight out of the box. I did titivate the cockpit with a bit of wire for headset/comms leads, new cyclic's from black wire shaped and some masking tape seat belts. The instrument panel had some dials roughly painted from a photo, but the glazing is not quite clear enough to allow you to see it.

The pic's below were taken late last night in the kitchen but aren't brilliant,

These images are a bit better due to natural light (a sunny day in Glasgow for a change!!)

The only thing I need to correct is the green paint on the 2 doors is quite translucent and needs undercoated and re-done and there's a couple of antenna missing from under the nose. Also the Airfix decals leave alot to be desired as usual and the 2 roundels are out of register and have a sliver of white around part of the circumference, I may replace these, but the "day-glo" patches will have to do despite showing a bit of the grey/green demarcation thro the decal.

All comments good and bad gratefully received, I'm just pleased to have finished something again, but still have too many projects to complete.

Thank's folk's,

Eng

I'm liking that ! Always loved the Gazelle and its lines, and this is a cracking little effort - the blade sag looks very authentic as well, that instrument panel looks particularly well done as well.

Very good :)

Aww cute! Do like the Gazelle, but have a lot of respect for anyone who's had to fly one under fire! A cracking build, really captures the look of the real thing beautifully. Will have to have a go at one of these one day I think. Well done!

Looks nice - how did you get it to sit on its skids? (mine sits firmly on its tail!)

Nicely done, it's not the most compliant of kits. There are definitely some issues with it, so to turn out what you have is good work. I like the instrument panel as well - looks good. :thumbsup2:

Re the tailsitting, I built one for Telford last year and had the same problem...ended up with small lead shot being fed in via the intake and then PVA trickled in to hold it in place. Followed by a long wait while the moisture evaporated out slowly... The next four on the bench are preweighted with lead shot filling the floor on the passenger area and some more in behind the fire wall. The skids don't help either. For some reason they're not positioned quite correctly and that has a knock on effect. On one of mine, I was missing a skid and scratched one up from brass wire...worked a treat and it almost sits perfectly. Almost.

Hi all,

Many thank's for all the "biggin' up", feeling rather chuffed

The kit was painted with Xtracrylix, decals sealed in between layers of Klear, and a misted coat of Humbrol matt varnish out of a spray can to dull it all down again. Details and metallic bits were all done with Vallejo acrylic's. A brush coat of Klear on the transparencies finished the job.

Thank's again for the great comments folk's.
