James G
James,To add a bit of colour, why not paint your Boz pod like this?.. Hi Spike, Could do that, especially like the heavy weathering.....did the Telic Tornados actually carry any Desert Pink BOZ pods? I have seen pics of really scuffed ones in ARTF, with the green showing through. What colour is the orginal green btw? Cheers James
James G
Hola, I have been steadily working away on the Tornado despite the twin distractions of work and the World Cup! The marking scheme is set to change, to 'BF-Born Fighter' -the one with Dennis the Menace and Gnasher for those of you familiar with the Eurodecals TELIC sheet (if not I will include a pic in the next update - coming soon). I've also invested in a pair of Flightpath Storm Shadow missiles (the big resin beasts!), to fully complete the weapons load. Primer is on, and I am just sanding/repairing surfaces and joins, and resribing panel lines (boring and frustrating but worth it). Painting 'proper' is hopefully not too far away. Update to come soon. Cheers James

Shaun
Looking forwards to see the next in progress shots, Will be great to see some paint on the model. Typically as normal, Aires annouce resin upgrade sets after you've done all the hard work yourself on the undercarrage bays. Hopefully these will be available by the autumn when I plan to restart my big Tornado. Shaun. Edited July 10, 2010 by Shaun
James G
Hey guys, A quick update, as promised. The primer is on the main airframe and I'm still on the boring process of micro-meshing surface irregularities, re-scribing panel lines, etc. As a more interesting diversion I have worked on some of the stores, and I'm pleased to say that the first small part of this build (namely the Sky Shadow ECM pod) is finished! I've also started painting the Sidewinders but they aren't done yet. As for the other weaponry, I hope to make a start on the Storm Shadows soon. I'm not too far away from the main stage of painting either, hopefully I can snatch some more time in the next couple of months.... All the best! upnorth
That's some fantastic work, James! If it's of use to you for adding visual intrest to the paint scheme, here's a pic I took a few years ago of a GR.4 sporting a drop tank with the remnants of a temporary winter finish over the old green/grey camo:
James G
That's some fantastic work, James! If it's of use to you for adding visual intrest to the paint scheme, here's a pic I took a few years ago of a GR.4 sporting a drop tank with the remnants of a temporary winter finish over the old green/grey camo: Hello mate, Thanks for the interest + kind praise - just to reassure you, my Tornado will have an extensively weathered finish - I am in the precess of undercoating patches of the tanks in dark camouflage grey (overall 'normal' GR4 colour), and then masking with Maskol and wetted salt, to wear off patches, as would be seen on the real thing. The BOZ-101 pod I have painted in the normal dark green, and this will be finished with a very scuffed ARTF coat. I have kept the Sky Shadow pod relatively pristine as it seems to be much cleaner in all the photos, and having it a darker grey adds visual interest I think. Updates to come as I get the many paint layers on! Cheers James
James G
Hi Guys, A quick update. I've just about managed to get the basecoat of WEM Barley Grey on the aircraft, ancillary parts and some of the stores. I'm adding the Sidewinders to the (virtually) finished list along with the Sky Shadow pod. I've made a start on the Storm Sadows, and the BOZ pod has been undercoated with green and then haphazardly masked with stippled patches of maskol. I also used the same appraoch with the front edges of the pylons and slat leading edges (having undercoated them in dark camouflage grey beforehand), and I used wetted table salt for additional masking - the result as you can see from the photos looks like some sort of bizarre candy! After the enamel Barley Grey basecoat is dry I will pre-shade with acrylic ocean grey, then finish with Vallejo Barley Grey, and hopefully the shading will look right.... Any comments welcome, hope you all like the progress. I hope to have this done before too long.....(!) Cheers James

James G
Hello again, Another update, I've snatched a bit of time to work on painting. I've done all the preshading, (over the WEM Barley Grey) layer, then blended everything in with a thin coat of Vallejo model air Barley Grey. The 2 tones are complementary and give the finish a bit of depth. The preshading is VERY subtle (perhaps too much?) so the close-up of the wing hopefully shows it better. I think I will go over some panels with the WEM Barley Grey again, and maybe post-shade some lines....then I reckon the painting will be done! I'm quite pleased with how the 'chipped' areas on the tanks and BOZ pod came out - I'll let the photos do the talking (Spike please note I have fixed the yellow caps on the AIM9Ls!) Cheers James

James G
Your getting closer, good work so far on the paint work.Your not fitting BOL rails for the AIM-9s? Hi Shaun, The BOL rails are attached to the pylons, I wanted to paint stuff assembled as much as possible.... Pretty much all the paint is on now, just some weathering touch-ups to be done tonight, then decals and wash/main weathering. I aim to have her in the comp at SMW 2010 Photos soon, Cheers

James G
Hi All, A little progress, it's been a while.... As you can see I am re-doing the preshading on the Barley Grey, I know, its a pain - but it wasn't showing properly the first time! All the stores are nearly done and just need decals and a little weathering. I'm pleased how the main canopy came out, I'm just tidying/polishing up a little. I'm very close now - frustrating as I have loads of work to do, and I want to have this ready for SMW....BM collective please cross your fingers to me! James G
Just to let you know...the decals are on and all she needs now is weathering . Hopefully all done by the end of the week, if not then I'm fairly sure she'll be on the competition table at Telford. I'll take some final progress shots and get them up when I can grab some time. Hope to see lots of BM'ers at SMW! Cheers James
