The hatch was a standard part of the manufacture, and was built into every fuselage. Although the transmitter/receiver might have been fitted in the cockpit, there were other items, which would have gone into that compartment, especially the I.F.F.

And, as an extra bit of information, the strake, above the door, was not a strengthener; it was a gutter, to guide rainwater away from that compartment, when the aircraft were parked, and water was pouring off the top of the wing.
