Empire Test Pilot's School Cossack F.1

This is my entry to the annual One-Week Group Build on the 'What-If?' site. I started it Wednesday night and finished this evening. I'm not very happy with the pics, so I'll take more tomorrow after work. The kit is the lovely Fujimi 1/72 Mig-21MF.

On July 28, 1976 two RAF Lightnings were scrambled from RAF Gutersloh to intercept a pair of fast moving targets inbound from northwest Czechoslovakia. Intercepting the two targets just inside West German airspace there were tense moments as the RAF fighters armed their Red Top missiles. However, when interecepted the two aircraft, which turned out to be a pair of Czech Mig-21s, complied with international interception procedures and indicated a wish to defect. The two Migs were escorted to RAF Gutersloh, where under great secrecy they were studied and the pilot's debriefed. Within two weeks a Shorts Belfast arrived at Gutersloh to remove the Migs under cover of darkness. Little else was known of what happened to the Migs until they resurfaced two years later, both at Boscombe Down.

Both were initially sent to the Aeroplane & Armament Experimental Establishment for evaluation. While the single-seat Mig-21MF remained with the A&AEE, serving in many roles, including Dissimilar Air Combat Training, the two-seat Mig 21UM was tranferred to the Empire Test Pilot's School, also at Boscombe, in late 1978. In 1984 the single seater joined the two seater at ETPS when the RAF and USAF formed a joint (and highly secret) Agressor Squadron flying ex-Soviet hardware at Nellis AFB in the US.

In British service the two Mig-21s were officially known as Cossack F.1 and Cossack T.2. Both were retired from ETPS in late 1997.

This is absolutely brilliant APD :thumbsup2: The back story is perfect, fits nicely with the Cold War :worthy:

That's a cracking Mi.... err Cossack. It somehow just looks the part in the ETPS colours and you could easily believe that TPs were trained on a bit of Eastern hardware as well the usual Western stuff. Like the back story as well, again believable and fits the jet nicely! :clap2:

Thanks for all the comments. I was quite surprised, but I actually won the One Week Group Build with this!

Well deserved win too Sir!

Love the build, and the back story, but it gets me thinking that a MiG-25 needs to join the ETPS...! :evil_laugh:
