Rhodesian T-55

Hello all,

I've already read numerous books about the Rhodesian bush war (The last was Winds of destruction, an EXCELLENT book! And I'm about to read Fireforce)

but I've never heard about T-55 being used during this war, till I came upon this topic on military photo.net.

With those pics:

Can someone here make it clear for me?

I believe that a shipment bound for Angola was seized at the port of Durban. The South Africans kept some for evaluation and the rest were given to the Rhodesians.

My book on vehicles and weapons in Rhodesia says a French ship the Astor was bound for Mombasa to drop off arms for Amin's Uganda but the regime fell and the ship was redirected to Angola, it called in a Durban and the cargo was confiscated as South Africa was at war with Angola at the time, the cargo incl 10 Polish built T55Ls with spares and ammo. THe SADF kept a few and passed the rest onto Rhodesia in Oct 1979. Never used in combat, they were of questionable servicability and their effectiveness was dubious

Regards

Wayne
