Stebos
More stuffage done. Up to date with my filling, just some minor sanding left. The 2 engines are put together minus props: They went together well, luckily the front grill doesn't need any filler. There's a small hairline gap around it but the paint will fill it ok. The tiny rear gun was also put together, it was a nightmare - the resin's so thin it was quite flexible and the gun just didn't want to stick down. It dry fits nicely into the hole, no filler or sanding will be needed. Lastly I've started on the floats. Adding the struts in stages as it takes a while for the glue to fix them. Temp supports with tape & bluetack used to stop gravity pulling them out of line. The struts are a pain - the sprue wasn't molded too cleanly, so the two sides don't match up, leaving ridges to scrape off. Dry fitting suggests I'll probably have to fix them with thick gap filling CA. Not much left to do before I can consider my painting/rigging strategy. Thanks for looking as always. Stebos
Almost to the priming stage! Oddly enough a stack of M977 wheels make the perfect jig for the float spars (and upper wing). Some gaps to fill with thick CA to help strengthen the joints. I've attached the engines as well. They were a nightmare to get aligned, the port one is more squint than I'd like but I'm overall happy with the result. The upper wing is staying off until things are painted. The final resin detail pieces need adding then it's off to the paintshop.

desmojen
That is looking properly cool Stebos. Only a mother could love it though eh, it reminds me of a Manatee Keep up the good work, I imagine your patience must be wearing thin with it now but it will be worth it in the end! Jen. Stebos
Thanks all, she's primed up (that & the HEMTT for the armour gb took an entire new can of primer!) after fiddling with the mainplane struts. None of them were quite the same length so I had to do some careful trimming. They'll be a pause before the painting starts, I want to try the airbrush on this one. As I've not used it yet I testing things on cheapy kit I don't mind ruining.
Stebos
My apologies on this one, been a bit of a hair pulling experience this one so motivation and photo evidence has been thin on the ground... Time for an update however. Everything primed: The top plane is just dry fitted, as expected none of the support struts neatly sat under. The lengths varied, giving gaps of varying mm above each one. I trimmed the tops down in stages until it was all mostly level (with scissors no less, I'm such a butcher). After a good 4hrs of masking the basic camo was laid down. It was not good and there's no pics as at this stage I was considering just abandoning it. Double ridged lines all over, poor coverage in the hidden away spots and overspray damaging the unmasked underside... Patches were brush painted over, I tried micromeshing the ridges but it didn't help a great deal. Motivation did return, I just thought 'sod it - time to get this done'. Hopefully weathering and Klear will hide most of the paint sins... Not having a beaching trolley or the means to make one, I'd been considering a diorama base, and recent *excellent* examples of this from Madman and Desmojen persuaded me a base was needed! A suitable photoframe base was found in B&Q, the glass removed, polystyrene added to build up most of the bulk and the whole thing was covered with polyfilla, roughly smoothed into a shallow beach. When the polyfilla was set I spread it with Vallejo 'sandy paste', which is little more than a thick paintlike gritty substance. I wasn't happy with finding actual sand grains fine enough for 1/72 so I tried this paste. The main problem I had with this was it wouldn't behave well well spread thick, I had to keep it very thin. As I couldn't add the thickness of sand I wanted the top level is more sunken than I'd have liked, I think I just get away with it. The grit was very fine though, just the level of texturing I wanted. The natural colour of it will need painting over, it's not very beachy straight from the tub. I wasn't able to get it as 'beach smooth' as I had in mind, it's rather pitted and rough in spots. For a first diorama attempt I'm pleased with it though. More progress with the 59: Weathering and decals on, rigging is underway. Ah the decals... another disaster there. I'd added them to the underside then had that horrible sinking feeling... I'd only put them on the underside of the *top* plane, not the *bottom* plane (yay biplanes)! The curse strikes again. Off they come, far to fragile to be saved. The reg. code is lost, I hope one really notices that The rest of the decals went on mostly fuss free, they were very thin and tended to dislike any adjusting once laid down. Microset worked well on them. The centre spars were still a little on the low side. Before adding the top plane and finishing the rigging I added dabs of milliput to each one, this will fill the gap (with careful trimming) and will be sticky enough to keep it held on, CA only being used on the pairs of outer supports. I will be soooooo glad to finish this, I swear I'm having fun though!
Mike
Musta missed this one Very nice it is too. I often wonder how people remember which rigging thread goes where when they finally put the top wings on

Stebos
Thanks folks, been a busy bee again tonight and painted up the crew: I picked up this small set of Luftwaffe crew by Preiser, the detail is a little on the soft side but I really can't complain for 1/72. From normal viewing distance they look pretty good with proportions etc. I'm no expert on the right colours and wasn't going to be hugely fussy on that score. Primed: Basic colours blocked in: First simple wash: and following some drybrushing and more washes the finished crew: My next update will likely be it all finished, very little left to do - waiting on the 'water' to go clear might well take a week or so. I'll be very glad to move onto something else...

Stebos
Phew! I'm calling this one done. My first biplane - not sure I want to do another! Not just yet anyway. The paint was a struggle, ridges defeated me. The water took about a month to cure fully. I learned a lot from this one, quite a number of mistakes made. Hopefully most have been sneakily hidden or aren't too noticable. I lacked experience of biplanes and good ref pics to do a full rigging set, I hope I did enough to make it somewhat plausible. Some lines I found later refs for, but it wasn't possible to add them by then. Despite being no masterpiece I'm very pleased with it. If I get to the end without trashing it or giving up I count it as a success.

Old VG 33
Hi congratulations ! I like your Heinkel 59 and as I made one I can say yours is nice. Next time if you want something a little easier as a biplane from the same era just try the Koolhoven FK 51 by AZUR / SECIAL HOBBY. Erwin
STUNNING work ! I love the camouflage. And ofcourse the waterbase.Very well done job. The figure on the wing gives a good idea of the size of the plane. Edited October 27, 2008 by Erwin
brooksy
That scene is just awesome Stebos. It's a great aircraft model, but I can't get over how realistic the water is. It just adds so much to the finished piece, and I am most envious. Regards Andy
