I find that using a circle template bought from WH Smith is the best thing. Every diameter you need is there. Just paint the whole wheel black then put the template over the wheel and spray the hub, works every time! Hope this helps.

Permanent marker has a habit of changing color when exposed to sunlight - particularly when it's on a non-absorbent surface. It will also bleed through most paints, so isn't advisable for using with models really.

You could try & get hold of a black or dark grey Gundam Marker? They're paint pens used for painting Gundams (crazy, eh? :hypnotised: ).

Mike Is correct do not use a Permanent Marker, I had a Brainwave to Preshade with a Black One and just drew on all the preshading!!

BIG MISTAKE!! every coat applied showed through Purple!! Had to Power spray off and start again, and basically sand it all off a nightmare

Nough said

To be honest most of the time I just use a 10 zero brush around the hubs and a slightly larger brush for the rest of the wheel. If I am in the mood and it's a big project I'll pull out the old template and give the AB a go but I find that is quite rare now.

You'll find that most of your handiwork disappears under dust, mud and dirt anyway so don't get to fussy.

Cheers

There was an excellent tip, on this site I think, about brush painting wheels. Paint the rim 1st. Then thin your tyre paint down and load your brush (a fine detail one) and press it up to the rim, capillary action pulls the paint around the wheel rim/tyre edge. You can then paint the rest of the tyre without touching the rim. It works for me!!

Stuart,

A quick search on here has revealed the original post (linky) that you are searching for, bizarrely in a thread titled "Painting Tyres, What do you use?"

I don't think that's the one being referred to Ian. I recall the post as well, but I think that as well as thinning the paint down the poster also wet the tyre with water for acrylics or white spirit for enamels to aid the capilliary action of the thinned paint when applied.

IIRC that is!!

Apologies for the bum steer if that's the case. I've a very vague recollection that there may have been another tyre painting discussion in one of the "clanky tanky" threads ......

Cheers,

The one I saw had illustrations of each step on it. I think it might have been on another site. I may be wrong!

I wonder what all our collective memory capacity would be measured at by any 'specialist' reading this thread.....!!!:rolleyes::lol::D
