desmojen
And it's finished! I put the finishing touches on this morning. Nothing earth shattering, just putting the last few bits on, touch ups etc from where you saw it last. Here's a bit of background on the markings. As I'd already mentioned, this scheme is included in the kit options. I have had a Watermark Decals sheet though for some time which also has this aircraft. There were some differences between the two and the Watermark ones looked to be better quality and better researched, so I went with them. The aircraft featured is one of several that were paid for by the Maharaja of Manipur and then handed over to the British to fight the Japanese. Used by 155 Squadron in Burma 1944, this particular aircraft was flown by Flight Lieutenant Paul Ostrander, a Canadian from Winnipeg. F/L Ostrander arrived at the squadron in May 1944; he flew escort duties for Hurricane fighter bombers and C-47 transports. He finished his tour safely in May 1945 and went on to become a helicopter pilot after the war. I'm very pleased with the finished product, in fact it's one of my favourite finshes in a long time. The model perfectly captures the menacing and yet sleek look of the MkIX Spitfire. Of course, there are a few nit picks, there almost always are. I'm not overly happy with the way the chips on the gun covers look over the white stripes, there are a few bits of silvering on some of the stencils (kit decals) and it has the wrong exhausts. That aside, I like it I don't think I would use the Aeroclub fuselage again. While it looks good now, it was a load of extra effort that it should not have been, and is crudely moulded in comparison with the rest of the kit. None of the small parts would fit as they should either. In future, I would make the necessary mods to the kit parts myself. I don't currently have any more Hasegawa Mk IX's in the stash, but having built this I will be happy to go and get some more! That's it for me now in this GB. I know I said I was going to do the Avenger as well, but other projects intrude, leaving me with insufficient time to fit it in. Thanks for all the support and nice comments though, it's been fun! desmojen
Thanks everyone! does your f/sgt get any work out of you or are you claiming modelling as your secondary duty,if i ever get my brick finished then this will be(for the moment !!)the kit on the top of the next kit to build list I'm on standby guard at the moment mate, I do enough work when I am there to keep people happy Nice one, great looking Spit, very nicely finished. Was wondering what wash you used. Thanks mate. There isn't much wash on it actually. The majority of the weathering is worked into the paintjob as I go. Where there is wash it is one of three different kinds; Promodellers Dark , Mig Productions Dark Dirt enamel wash or my own home brewed oil wash which I make up in whatever colour I want. Grooveh, even if it's a little short (?). I used the aeroclub corrected fuselage, so it's the right length Jen.
