Markings

Daz and I, were discussing a certain F-teen aircraft and it's markings; at which time a question popped into me 'ead. What are your favorite aircraft markings.

My favorites in no special order would be VF-1 Wolfpack, 35th FW Wild Weasels, VF-84/103, VF-114, 111, 33, w/Tomcats, 11, 31,56, 228OCU Squadron Tornado's or Tooms. I love the F-15 Eagles, but the markings are basic and to a degree generic only the Tail codes vary. and yes all Grey. Oooooooops I cannot forget those certain vipers that wear that distinctive Red, White, and Blue scheme :DB)

USN VF-111 Sundowners, just love the tail markings.

USAF 497th TFS Night Owls....there's something about those black bellied F-4s.

RAF 56 and 74 squadrons, all varieties of post WW2 a/c, but particularly the FGR2s with the red, blue and black tails, breaks up that oh so tedious all over greyness (F'teens....yuk!).

2 Squadron markings have always looked good but my favourite has to be 11 Squadron markings - those BIG eagles on the tail.

With you there, XI sqn jets have always looked good when alongside other squadrons aircraft when comparing type for type, though treble one always know how to paint a jet well too :)

Got to agree with you there, the F-4's looked really neat with the different coloured tails.

Only non-British markings that look good that I can think of are the F-16's of the Texas ANG - nice!

I've always been partial to 3 Sqn's markings as far as the RAF is concerned. Any post war RAF aircraft I've ever seen with 3's markings on it looked good, and that includes the Typhoons.

If I had to say why, I think its the colour combination, the bright green and yellow compliment each other well, they just kind of jump out at you, whatever you see them on.

Beyond the RAF, one of my all time favorites would be the Canadian Armed Forces in the later part of the F-101 Voodoo era. That big red and white lightning bolt on the glossy air defence grey fuselage.... classic really. Even better with 409 Sqn's screaming hawk's head marking on the tail.

409's colour presentation aircraft "Hawk One Canada" is probably one of the most memorable sets of markings ever put on a Voodoo. I remember seeing it at an airshow in 1982, man did that leave an impression!

That's a very good pic you found there Rich, but I think the Rippers best markings were CAG Tomcats from 2000 onwards, and the SH they fly now.

I do apologise, but I haven't got one favourite. I like all USN and USMC markings from the 60's onwards. I'm not keen on line jets in TPS, they are grey, but I think the CAG jets are really spectacular. It's the same with AF F-15s and -16s, the line jets, especially USAFE and PACAF are ,again, just grey, but the CO jets are quite spectacular, AV, WP and WW spring to mind. There are some really nice RAF schemes, a favourite is No.111 Sqn for Lightnings, Phantoms and Tornados being a fave of mine, along with No.74

Well- ever since I got a revell /542 scale Forrestal for my birthday around 67-68 I have always had a thing about that ship- and also, being a med cruiser it's a little closer to home than all that N-something stuff.

Forrestal although never really going on line in SEA, has always been at the sharp end of keeping the peace in the Med and surrounding territiories, and it's a shame they only received the F-14 after the tomcat went to the overall light gull grey paint job.

Also- of course my other major youngster modelling memory was getting the NEW Airfix 1/72 F-4h1 with the Forrestal Bedevilers jet- WOW!

I do wish I could find a mint Revell early release Forrestal, but I've never seen one at the shows

The airfix Phantom was my first as well, but I did the J from VF-31 (Bandwagon!)

It was a Phantom from VF-74 which started the Forrestal's fire while she was in the Gulf of Tonkin. An electrical surge accidently fired a zuni rocket, which then hit an external fuel mounted on a VA-46 Skyhawk.

The Clansmen's Skyhawks were always very smart. If you can get hold of the Victory Productions sheet, one of the 10(!) options is an A-4E from VA-46 which was destroyed in the fire.
