keefr22
.....the fact is that we are able to laugh this and it does not offend anyone, yet exagerate a foreign accent and wow! WWIII.Rant over and sorry that this has been aired on a modelling site, I know it's not appropriate here. Well said Mark, agree 100%. And before anyone accuses me of being racist, I'm Welsh (good start!!) lived with being called Taff all the time I was in the RAF (can't say it did me any harm!!) & I have a Japanese Great-Grandfather on my dad's side, & Norwegian Great-Grandfather on my mum's. So, no jokes about whale hunting please...... We really need to learn to lighten up again in this country.... Back to the Trumpy Lightnings - let's hope they are scaled up/down Airfix kits, they might be accurate for a change then....!!! Keef
Van
I have worked in Vietnam and sat at a dinner table with 12 Vietnam Airlines hostesses all laughing at my attempts to speak their language. ..probably because you were saying something that either sounded totally nonsensical or was quite rude-the same word with different inflection or tone can mean widely different things...some very vulgar indeed! It is generally it is ok for a group to take the p*** of themselves , but it can be problematic to start doing it to others who are different. For an example nearer the uk, many Irish get more than a little fed up with the English and their Irish jokes- Also I am sure you are old enough to remember the series "love thy neighbour". The script writers were "only joking" but it was offensive to many then and even more so now. I won't go any further into politics. By the way I was not "baiting" anyone, merely making an observation about humour involving casual unintended racism concerning the Chinese. lets stick to models-I am looking forward to the Trumpeter Lightning, which may or may not be very accurate-we'll see. Mark
Yep, back to modelling... Just back from Yeovilton, good day out, met a few familiar people and made some new mates too! In the competition was a 56Sqn Lightning that was just beautifully painted, Brian I think the modeller's name was, and that did not get placed which was a shame. But to see that scheme on a 1/32nd Lightning, that would be a WOW! moment. Edited February 9, 2008 by busdriver

Mike V
How I enjoy racist humour! Anyone tried speaking Mandarin, or indeed any language other than their ownwith a good accent? The British are renowned for their abilities to master foreign languages. Not Van Half Vietnamese and proud of it. I don't know about "racist", but you have to admit some of the typos and words have taken on a language of its own "Engrish". I am reminded of when I was stationed at Osan. We went to the Burger King in Sungton, and on the advertisement mate by the register, was an ad for the Chicken sandwich, which said it was "Mouse Watering". Needless to say, we busted out laughing. The girl at the counter did not understand the humor, till my friend (who’s Korean) told her, then she busted up laughing too. You ought here some of the "Spanglish" words on my side of the family. Family reunions can be so much fun. Mike V

Thanks for the nice comments about my Lightning Mark, yes my name is Brian (Abingdon IPMS) , it did receive a lot of interest and compliments, Thanks people! When I have mastered some PC skills I hope to make regular postings with photos of my MOD aircraft. I am combining with Speedy to put an MOD flightline display at the Salisbury show. Brian aka MODeller.

Brian aka MODeller. Equally enjoyed the Lightning, Brian. Amazed it didn't place in the compo. (Apparently the competition tables looked suspiciously identical to similar tables at Telford several months ago - come on lads, come up with something new will ya?) Good to put some faces to names, notably Tigger and Mark the busdriver! EDIT: One more thing: I would suggest that the various people who mock Trumpeter's kits actually build one and draw their own conclusions from that...... thx6667
EDIT: One more thing: I would suggest that the various people who mock Trumpeter's kits actually build one and draw their own conclusions from that...... Amen to that. As I said to Jen and MikeW at the show, I'd rather have an 85% kit of something never before kitted that requires 15% of me, than no kit. That's why I enjoy Britmodeller because it does seem to have more of a fair share of practical modellers who build stuff.
Gmat
Perhaps this might be of interest. I am a fourth generation Japanese-American living in Japan. My Japanese is not very much more than survival Japanese, but I've experienced situations where the shoe is on the other foot. Here in Tokyo, on National TV, it passes for humor wear a blond wig, stick a plastic nose on and mangle Japanese for laughs. Not very funny to know that they are laughing at you rather than with you. Many Japanese comedians and TV personalities use it for a quick laugh. I see the kids that I teach English to throw the accent at me, even if they are not trying to offend me. I guess it would be like if you met a caucasian who could only speak Japanese. I first saw it here on Japanese TV in the 80s and it was a strange feeling. In my case, I've seen the ugly side of racism. I used to go a lot to live houses to listen to local bands. A few can speak English rather well. I would talk with them. Sometimes I would speak in English and sometimes would try to speak Japanese. My Japanese really sucked, but I tried. One guy said that he was sorry that he had to ignore me as the other fans were getting angry. Another one started intoducing a monologue in his act where he would mangle Japanese. I had to laugh along with everyone, but was pretty hurt and disgusted inside. Before and after each show, he was a decent guy. I guess that I had p*ssed people off. Just because people laugh, you may not know how they really feel. Sometimes it is just ignorance and misunderstanding that starts the dirty snowball rolling, but once you offend, it is hard to make repair things. Just my two cents worth. Proud to be Human, glad to from Hawaii. Best wishes, Grant
Ian
Much as I would treasure a 1/32 Lightning, I must reluctantly pass. It's display space y'see - where the h*ll would I put it. I have a Tamiya F-4J with all sorts of extras to go on it and I simply dont have anywhere to show it. Similarly the Trumpy A-7E. Ahhh well, maybe in a coupla years when I've migrated to the (cavernous) loft and left the lower floors for the family - That's exageration in case y'all thought I own a small mansion. Having said that I am really looking forward to seeing these things populating the tables at shows and events over the next few years. I love the old Frightning and was fortunate enough to be working close to Warton in the last couple of years of them flying 'chase' for the Tornados - the twitchers network there were very 'clued-in' so we always knew when flights were scheduled. Quite unforgetable. Ian Edited February 13, 2008 by Ian
Phartycr0c
The accuracy issue with Trumpy kits is surely one of opinion and exactly how far you want to go with representing a particular subject. In my own case, the models I build, I know will never win show prizes however In "Dave world" they are perfect representations of the real thing. It never ceases to amaze me the level of modelling talent out there and I know it is likely I will never aspire to some of the high standards of work, however I dont necessarilly consider myself as simply an assembler but a modeller and as such some alterations to kits are a necessary evil be it removing flash from parts through to the addition of aftermarket bits. I really enjoyed building my Trumpy A10 despite its inaccuracies. What I am trying to say is that I am satified with what I see at the end of a build, some will think its brilliant, some will drive a coach and horses through it only I know the truth. Therefore good or bad won't the Trump Lightning be a good basis for a subject? Im sure the aftermarket crew such as Chris at Zacto and the decal manufacturers will soon be producing stuff following the kits release!
