  1. Hi all! First just to say a quick hi to everybody! This is actually my first post and my first model in a really long long time, actually it's my first armour kit. The model in question is an old issue of a Panzer Ausf. V G 1/48 from Academy, which is a motorized version. Although I am not planning in focussing much on the motor bit. I got this model back when I was a kid so I had to go through undoing a big gluey mess I did back then. As I am using this model to learn all the techniques back again I would much appreciate comments on how to improve things! As you see I cleaned the side objects there were glued to the sides of the hull and have started adding Miliput plaster for the Zimmerit cover. I have made a custom mould for the zimmerit pattern out of plasticard with a scribbler. I have also added some brass mesh to the air intakes at the back to the tank. Here is a detail of the zimmerit pattern: And here from the back of the tank: As you see there is still plenty of fitting issues at the back of the hull and also on the front. Here is a detail of the front: Also as you can see I have started adding some plasticard to the sides as I plan to add some scratch-built armour plates to the side. This is it for now. I plan on keep on adding the zimmerit and give it a light sanding. Also finish adding the armour side plates and modify the upper bit of the turret where the gun joints to give it the proper shape of the Ausf. G. I was also thinking in adding the curled protection plates to the exhaust at the back of the tank. Thanks in advance for your comments! All the best, Alex
  2. Panther A Updates (36390, 36391 & 36392 for Takom) 1:35 Eduard There has been a rash of new King Tiger [/i]AND[/i] Panther models lately in the dominant 1:35 scale, with Takom amongst the competing camps. These sets have been designed with their kits in mind to provide detail upgrades, scale thickness parts and the anti-magnetic mine countermeasure paste that is called Zimmerit. As usual with Eduard's Photo-Etch (PE) and Mask sets, they arrive in a flat resealable package (the larger ones using Ziplok bags), with a white backing card protecting the contents and the instructions that are sandwiched between. Upgrade Set (36390) This general set is spread over two frets of brass, one of which is nickel-plated and pre-painted. As this is an kit that includes the interior, the majority of this set consists of parts for the many shell storage boxes adding tons of detail and scale fidelity to these areas, with the rest of the set dedicated to replacing all the driver's instruments, radio boxes etc. with laminated and painted faces that offer much more realistic finishes whilst reducing the workload on the modeller. Late Zimmerit (36391) Zimmerit paste was a mixture of wood pulp and cement to resist the placing of magnetic mines on the hull as a slight overreaction to their use on the Eastern front. It was applied with trowels to most vertical and near vertical surfaces in a pattern, some of which were specific to the factory the vehicle was built in. This set is on two larger PE frets, and uses a thinner gauge of brass to make it conform better to the model. The sections are tailored specifically to the Takom kit, and this includes the kugelblende armour around the bow machine gun, which is best rolled to shape on a soft surface using a good sized marble or other hard ball to obtain the correct curvature, so lots of trial fittings will be appropriate there. Annealing the part will assist in this, making the brass more malleable. Holes in the brass match the fixtures moulded into the exterior, which is most evident on the hull sides under the fenders and on the rear bulkhead, with separate parts for the stowage boxes and multiple sections around the exhausts. The curved front fenders have multiple strips of PE Zimm that fit between the stiffening ribs, and each of the side-skirts (Schürtzen) have a Zimmerit panel keyed to their specific shape and size. The mantlet is another curved surface, and you are shown how to attach the PE to these parts for the best fit, starting at the top centre and working your way around. A few small raised areas will need to be removed before it can be fitted. Exterior (36392) A single sheet of brass containing new track stowage racks; pioneer tool details and shackles; fire extinguisher cage; clasps for the rear stowage boxes; jack block box, and a complete new holder for the barrel cleaning rod tube, with clasps and new end-cap skins for ultimate detail. Tiger 1 zimmerit

Hi all, i apologise if this has been asked before but I can't find anything after searching. I'm building the Tamiya mid production Tiger 1 and have decided to attempt to apply zimmerit. I am also planning on removing some of the side 'mudguards/fenders' as damaged. My question is would the zimmerit have gone all the way down the side to the bottom of the hull side, or would it have been applied behind the side mudguards, (the ones that stick out the side) so if I remove some of the mudguards would the area underneath be covered in zimmerit or not? thanks Al
  4. I'm probably getting a bit too carried away with the anticipation and excitement of it all but I've decided to build another 1/48 tank to go along with my Hobby Boss M4A3. This one in fact: With it's rather lovely packaging: I hope this is okay with the mods? The Tiger 1 has fairly recently become one of my favourite tanks and, while I was looking for a suitable 1/48 version for this GB I came across AFV Club's Final Version Tiger 1. I found it online and had one on order, but the retailer was unable to get one from the supplier, despite claiming to have several in stock when I ordered. I then struggled to find another one at a reasonable price. I had given up on getting one when I read somewhere that AFV Club's boxing was based on a kit produced by Skybow. Then, by chance, while checking out Parabellum's website, I discovered they were offering the Skybow Late Tiger 1 kit for £11. AFV Club's version comes with a small PE fret whereas I've had to buy it separately - but it worked out at about the same as the cheapest AFV Club's version I could find. When I picked up this tank I also got the track links set to go with it. I will post some photos of the contents of the box later. Kind regards, Stix
  5. This is going to be my second build for this GB: I thoroughly enjoyed building Dragon's 1/72, Zimmeritted, Panther and Tiger for the D-Day GB so when I saw this online I figured it it would be great for this GB. As of this post it is the first German armour in this GB. Can't wait to get this one started after next weekend. I will be building this when I'm not at home so, like my recent 1/76 Airfix Tiger 1 and Cromwell builds, it will be made with only very limited equipment available. Kind regards, Stix
  6. Right - I am now getting a bit carried away (or I ought to be!). Now that my 1/72 Dragon King Tiger is nearing completion it's back at home where I can do the remaining work on it, decals etc., but only at weekends. Having done a quick check through the list of builds in this GB I realised, if I'm not mistaken, that no-one is making a 1/72 Tiger 1. I'm making a Tiger 1 in 1/48 and DaveJL is building one in 1/35. Then, a couple of weeks ago, while in Birmingham, I was in the Ian Allen bookshop where I noticed this: .......and it was reduced! So this will be my next weekday build and this GB will have Tiger 1s in three scales. I'm thinking I might make it as part of a small diorama alongside the King Tiger. Not sure of the setting yet. I hope to get this started tomorrow. Kind regards, Stix
  7. Hi, I am about to built a few King Tigers of s.SSPzAbt. 501 in 1/72 during their deployment to the Ardennes offensive and I am a bit confused regarding camouflage schemes, turret numbers, Zimmerit (or not) and so on. Does anyone know about a good site where I can get an overview? I found something here and there on the net but I would love to find something listing up tanks and their specifics. And by the way - did King Tigers have a standard factory camouflage pattern from some point on? INgo
  8. Well, as if I didn't have enough on my plate. I dug this out and found that it had markings for LAH in Normandy. Not bona fide leopard print per se, but close to it. Leopard Print in Dark Yellow, Olive Green and Chocolate Brown. If I ever change my mind about this, it's a car-yard respray and off we go. This is, actually, a pretty good kit. No kit is perfect, and the tracks are ok for DS, but I've seen better (nothing is better than Dragon DS Leopard 2 tracks - they're sublime). Actually, the tracks in this kit are a bit short from memory. There's no excuse for this, when DS is such a pliable medium, and you're not trying to make a working running gear. So, Box Art: Contents: Markings - the Leopard Print example is 2nd from the bottom:
