  1. Reini's Century Series - F-105G Thunderchief Trumpeter kit. I've built the single seater years ago, but this is the two seater SAM-hunting 'Wild Weasel' variant. Pile-o-plastic - it's a decent looking kit. I'm not really happy with the Trumpeter decals, I've had issues where they are just the wrong size, usually too large. Like the ejection seat warning markings. They are quite prominent in the real thing, but these look just way too big! Caracal seems to be making a decent looking decal sheet, so I might pick that up. Wheels and pitot tube. I do have some items still missing from this kit, mainly related to the loadout. Trumpeter's AGM-45 Shrike and AGM-78 Standard ARM that come with the kit are apparently wrong size, But I have yet succeeded in finding replacements for them. This is my earlier work on the Trumpeter F-105 kit. From years back, brush painted and all.
  2. After about six months, I've finally completed my 1/48 scale Hasegawa F-4G Phantom "Wild Weasel". The kit itself was fine (other than the mysterious missing RWR), but I had primer related problems, or masking tape problems, or paint problems. Either way, I spent far more time scraping and reapplying paint than I'd have liked to. I wanted to do a Spangdahlem bird with shark-mouth, so decals came from Milspec (sheet 48-007), paints were Hataka (first time using them), a few bits came from my Eduard/Academy F-4, and I splashed out on a more correct AN/ALQ-131 from Eduard to replace the AN/ALQ-119 supplied in the kit. @Mark V provided some good information about colour schemes and likely load-outs - hence it's carrying a single dummy HARM missile (admittedly with fins), drop tanks, and an empty TER on the starboard inner pylon. Thanks also to @bar side, who was tackling the same aircraft at the same time and provided a lot of inspiration/information. Over-all, I'm mostly happy how it turned out. There are a few issues - the cockpit glazing's a bit wonky (could have done with the one-part canopy version), I messed up the starboard shark-mouth, and the tyres could be sanded/flattened so that both nose-wheels touch the ground. There are a few places where you can see I've had paint issues. However, the Hasegawa kit has held up well for its age and I'd happily build another one.   3. Both BM and Google search yielded a several individual results of the two most prominent Wild Weasel 'Thuds' in 1/72 scale, but I couldn't get a good direct comparison between the two. Apparently the Monogram is an oldie but goodie and very accurate; its main point of criticism being the old-fashioned raised panel lines. The Trumpeter kit has more up-to-date engraved panel lines, and supposedly features a lot of detail. However, I have read about some accuracy issues, plus overdone and oversized riveting. Also, the decal colours are way off. Any Britmodellers out there who can give me some pointers? At this moment I tend to lean towards the Trumpeter kit because of the engraved panel lines, but if its accuracy issues are serious, I'd be willing to invest some time in the rescribing of a second-hand Monogram kit.   4. Hello All, Another long term work in progress that has made it to the bench again. This time it is the Revell EA6A Wild Weasel. I started this several years back. It is a bear of a kit. with many hard to fill gaps , especially in the wheel wells. I did my best to fill them with strip plastic..they came out OK. Many of the panel lines at the intakes and underside panel were lost do to poor fit so those were rescribed. I don't worry about mixing raised and scribed lines.   5. Hi all and my latest finish, a Monogram 1/72 F-105G Wild Weasel built for a Vietnam GB elsewhere. The build thread is here if you're interested but to recap: Kit: Monogram 1/72 F-105G Build: Out of the box Paints: Halfords primer from a can. Revell Acrylics with a paint brush. Future, Flory Models Wash, W&N Matt Varnish Decals: Mix of kit and Superscale Sheet. Markings: 561st Tactical Fighter Squadron, 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, Southeast Asia 1972. This aircraft (S/N 63-8320) scored 3 Mig kills in Vietnam. I don't know if the aircraft carried kill markings but I added two under the cockpit. As a footnote, the last F-105 shot down in the Vietnam War was from the 561st and the squadron was the last to fly the F-4 Pantom II on ops. Anyway, some pics! I also love how the instruction sheet has call outs for what many of the pieces are e.g. 'ECM pods' or 'Drop tanks'......clearly aimed at the young builder.   6. As tated in the build thread, here are some hastily-taken, and not very good photos of my "Whacked Out Wild Weasel" build. So named because of the plastic mayhem needed to make a good kit out of the Trumpeter F-100 offering. In fact, the fact that it's the Trumpete kit is probably the only thing that sets if off from other builds of the F-100F -- that and the fact that most of the pics have disappeared from most of the other builds on-line!   7. Happy to show my first model after joining BM. This old kit, intended as a quick build for training freehand added airbrush camouflage, surprised me with robust quality plastic resulting in a very smooth build. Despite the age (1980's) and the raised panel lines I started to like it more and more during the construction period. The model is build in the colors off the 17th Wild Weasel Squadron based at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, (1970-1974). Plane no. 291, was nicknamed "Muttley the Flying Dog". A famous cartoon in that period. Crew chief Bob Wood himself painted the cartoon on the air intakes. The upper camouflage pattern is created with free hand airbrush. The transition line to the lower hull is created with help from "Tacky-Gum". Used paint: Gunze MR Hobby Brown H310, (FS 30219), light green H303, (FS 34102) and dark green H309, (FS 34079). The lower hull in grey H311, (FS 36622) except for the center-line tank. This is a non standard and own creation. Weathering washes from Flory Models and water paint, (from the kids). All finished with a layer Revell enamel matt 2. Metal exhaust painted with HK's "True Metal line Gun Metal Wax", protected by Tamiya's X-19 smoke. So the plastics turn out to be still fairly competitive with modern kits. The decals are definitely not. They are not as sharp printed as we used to nowadays. Little struggling on some spots with silvering effect despite using a base off Alclad Aqua gloss, (ALC600) and "emergency" help from SET and SOL. So if you thinking about a Monogram F-105 take a look at Revell's one. It is the same plastic but with more modern quality, (and a more extensive) decal sheet. Kind Regards, Rudie
  8. With a few builds to clear off the bench at the moment so I'm not getting straight on with this. However, here's the plan for thi very exciting GB. The kit: Trumpeter's 1/72 F105G Thunderchief. Extras: Eduard's "Big Ed" PE detailing set. Others: Hasegawa ground crew and equipment. CMK Vietnam era pilots (standing). In the group chat I heard the fin needs modifying to be accurate so if anyone knows how to go about doing this let me know and depending on how much time I have, I might give it a go.
  9. Its 1965 and the USA is deeply engaged in the war in Vietnam. The F105D Thunderchief is one of its main strike aircraft, but the NVA is fighting back hard and the F105D is taking heavy casualties As well as the tenacious Mig pilots, the US Air was was dogged by the Soviet designed SA 2 'Guideline' Surface to Air Missile (SAM). This missile was supplied to North Vietnamese by the Soviets - the Vietnam War was the first modern war in which guided antiaircraft missiles seriously challenged highly advanced supersonic jet aircraft. It would also be the first and only time that the latest and most modern air defense technologies of the Soviet Union and the most modern jet fighter planes and bombers of the United States confronted each other in combat. Indeed, nearly 17,000 Soviet missile technicians, and operator/instructors would deploy to North Vietnam in 1965 to help defend Hanoi against American bombers, while North Vietnamese missilemen completed their six to nine months of SAM training in the Soviet Union. From 1965 through all of 1966, nearly all of the 48 U.S. jet aircraft shot down by SAMs over North Vietnam were downed by Soviet missile men. The Soviet Union supplied 7,658 SAMs to North Vietnam, and their defense forces conducted about 5,800 launches, usually in multiples of three. By the war's end, about 205 aircraft had been lost to North Vietnamese surface-to-air missiles. The USAF decided to counter the problem - initially with the 2 seat F105F Thunderchief 'Wild Weasel III' after a version of the F4C Phantom failed. The aircraft were armed with 2 x AGM45 Shrike ARMs and 1 x AGM78 Standard ARM for longer ranges. Eventually the USAF converted 61 F105F's to G standard. Meanwhile the RAF was going through its normal painful procurement process, whilst keeping an eye on the USAF and the ongoing war in Vietnam. Whilst eventually ordering the Harrier GR1, Phantom FGR2, Jaguar GR1, Buccaneer S2B and later the Tornado GR1, it became apparent that the Wild Weasel mission would be vital in any war against a Soviet backed foe. The RAF requested an order of 20 x F105G in late 1974, just before the Vietnam war was coming to its bitter end in 1976. However production had ceased - an agreement was made between the MoD and the Pentagon, where the RAF would send 20 crews to the USA to be converted to the F105G and trained by combat experienced pilots. As part of this agreement, the RAF would 'Lend/Lease' 16 F104G Thunderchiefs to equip 1 frontline RAF Squadron. 41 Sqn had been earmarked to move to RAF Coltishall and convert to the new Sepecat Jaguar. The decision was taken to assign 41 Sqn to the Thunderchief and the new challenge of the Wild Weasel role, based out of RAF Wattisham in Suffolk. The logic was that the aircraft should not be committed to RAF Germany, but rather held in UK ready to deploy as required. The Squadron utilised the overhauled ex USAF airframes, keeping most of the USAF equipment needed to fly them (much as the F4J UK purchase), however they were painted in the current RAF colours of DSG/DG over LAG. They operated in a similar fashion to the USAF, often working with other RAF strike aircraft; the Thuds were kept in service to cover this capability gap until 1986. But by then the airframes were worn out. The RAF lost the Wild Weasel capability, in 1990 the ALARM ARM was finally bought into service and equipped Tornado Sqns - however the RAF was never again to have a true Wild Weasel capability. For this Group Build I will build a 1/72 Trumpeter F105G Thunderchief (on its way via Evil Bay at a reasonable price), with some decals grabbed from various 1/72 RAF builds.   10. You can't have a WHIF without a TSR2. Sorry no kit bashing involved with this, but I will be using lots of spares from the box to build a Wild Weasel variant. The aim is to have a rotary bomb bay, alarms on the wings, ECM & chaff pods on the spine and so on. Also a new cammo wrap, possible to match the current MTP or a desert style with dark earth, mid stone. Oh yes and all in smashing 1/144. Thanks for looking, pictures to follow.
  11. Well - In keeping with my routine I will build a 1/48 model as well as the 1/72. Without going 'Full Limey' with the Hase FG1, I decided to kill 2 birds with 1 stone and build the F4G from Spang as part of my childhood USAFE memories project. Jury is out with regarding the finish....I was going for the Lizard/Euro 1 finish, but the other Tim is doing that (I also like 3 colour cam finishes and masking....) So I may use the Xtracolor 48005 decals for the later grey model as I am not sure about the Hase decals? Also think about some aftermarket HARM's or may just build OOB...choices choices!!
