  1. Hello everybody, as I'm quite new here I decided to finally contribute something meaningful and treat you all with a build of mine. Since I'm working from home at the moment I figured this to be the perfect time to start one of my long-term projects, a Sukhoi Su-17 (Fitter-C) in 1/48. The Real thing The Su-17 started life as a project at Sukhoi to improve the low-speed and take-off/landing performance of the basic Su-7 design. Liftjets proved to be a not feasible as they were dead weight most of the time and occupied much needed space in the airframe. Variable-geometry wings on the other hand seemed to offer a perfect solution to this problem. The outer part of the Su-7 wing was redesigned to be moveable and a demonstrator, based on the Su-7BM, was built and proved successful during tests. The first Su-17 variant (Nato Code: Fitter-C) that went into production was basically an Su-7BKL with Variable-geometry wings, a dorsal spine holding additional avionics, a clamshell canopy instead of a sliding one and a hydraulic drive system for the moveable wings. Still, the performance left something to be desired compared to the Su-7. While low-speed and take-off/landing performance improved markedly, range and payload did not. This was largely because the Su-17 retained the old AL-7F engine while overall weight increased. Only with the introduction of a new engine, the AL-21F, all performance data finally improved significantly. This variant went into production as the Su-17M ("M" for "modernized"). The References The subject of my build will be “Red 16”, a Su-17 assigned to the 217th Fighter-Bomber Air regiment based at Kyzyl-Arvat (todays Serdar, Turkmenistan), patrolling the Iranian border in the early 80s. They received second-hand Fitters in 1979 to replace their old MiG-21PFMs used as fighter-bombers until then. Inspiration came from these articles from the site “easternorbat.com” (fantastic site for all Soviet aviation aficionados): http://www.easternorbat.com/html/217th_reg_su-17_bb_eng.html http://www.easternorbat.com/html/217th_regiment_80s_eng.html I have a soft spot for Soviet equipment stationed at the remote parts of the Soviet Union and in recent years, many photographs from private collections emerged, showing daily life on some of these remote spots at the edge of the red empire. Often these places lacked even basic commodities like running water: https://ok.ru/kizylarvat/album/51975801143379?st._aid=Groups_Photo_Album_List_openAlbum Then I've collected some walkarounds for detailing the kit: https://www.scalenews.de/suchoi-su-7-fitter-walkaround-46/ http://walkarounds.scalemodels.ru/v/walkarounds/avia/after_1950/su-17_omsk/ https://www.scalenews.de/ngg_tag/suchoi-su-17-walkaround-39/ http://litnik.in.ua/walkaround/reaktivnye-samolety/walkaround-su-17m-ot-peps-chast-2 The Kits Till now, there are no kits available in 1/48 to build the earlier marks of the Su-17. Therefore, the only possibility to portray one of these variants is to combine several existing kits. In this case it will be: The Kopro Su-7, which will be used mainly for its fuselage: The Hobby Boss Su-17, which will provide its wings, landing gear, weapons and various detail parts: Of course, some aftermarket help is thrown into the mix too, namely: Eduard Brassin Su-7 ejection seat Eduard photoetch Su-7 cockpit Quickboost Su-7 air Master Su-7 pitot and gun barrels Wolfpack Su-7 exhaust Reskit Su-17 wheels Master Su-17 pitot and gun barrels Although quite a complete package, some scratch building will be required too. Thanks for reading and hope to see you along my journey! Cheers Markus
  2. A&A Models is to release a 1/72nd Sukhoi Su-17 Samolet R (1949) prototype (link) kit - ref. 7208 Release expected in March 2020 - more details soon. Source: https://www.facebook.com/1048501705294464/photos/a.1090974107713890/1949183641892928/ V.P.
  3. Su-17 (1949) Advanced Prototype (7208) 1:72 A&A Models - ModelSvit The Su-17 (Aircraft-R) was an advanced porotype aircraft from Sukhoi and should not be confused with the later Su17 Fitter aircraft; it would appear that Sukhio reused the designation just to confuse us in later years! The aircraft was designed to match data developed by the Central Aerodynamic Institute in Moscow. The aircraft would feature a 50 degree swept wing fitted with air brakes and boosted flight controls. As well as an ejector seat the aircraft would feature an entirely detachable nose section. Problems with the wing design, and also the types proposed TR-3 engine would hinder the project, though not as much as Pavel Sukhoi falling out of favour did. Sukhio OKB was scrapped which ultimately ended the project. Only one airframe was built which never flew and then was used as a gunnery target. Kit This is a new tool from A&A models, part of the Modelsvit group. The kit arrives on five sprues of grey plastic, one clear sprue, a small PE fret, small decal sheet and a sheet of masks. The plastic is of good quality and while it may have a slight feel of the shorter run type of injection plastic the details are sharp and there is no flash, Construction starts with the cockpit. Behind the tub is also the front wheel well, and the sides form the insides of the intake with the cockpit being at the very front of the fuselage, A seat with PE belts is made up for the inside along with a control column being added. Instrument panel and side panel details are provided in decal form. Once these parts are together the exhaust and wheels are made up. Masks are provided for painting the wheels which is a nice touch. The main gear well is also then constructed. Once all these sub assemblies are finished they can be placed inside the main fuselage and it can be buttoned up. The opposite fin side is then added. We then move onto the wings. These are of conventional build with left & right, upper and lower parts. Three prominent wing fences are added to each wing. Clear lights are provided for each wingtip. Once competed they can be added to the fuselage along with the tail planes and the hump behind the cockpit. To finish off the landing gear is made up and added along with the gear doors. Two different canopies are provided depending of whether the modeller wishes to display it open or closed. Mask are provided for painting the canopy. . Decals A small decal sheet provides 8 red stars only for the aircraft. Conclusion It is good to see a new kit available of this design. Even though it never went any further data from the design undoubtedly went into later Sukhio OKB designs when the design bureau was reopened in 1953 after Stalin's death. Highly recommended. 10. Its been a while since I have posted an RFI (work, travel and children!), but here is the 1:48 KittyHawk SU-22M4 Fitter. Not a kit to cut your teeth on, but certainly not as bad as some of the online reviews would have you think. My biggest issues were: The multi-part fuselage (take your time and try not to introduce an error, ask me how I know!). Wing Fences needed a little bit of dry fitting, trimming and fettling (not that difficult). Pylon locations were indistinct and the instructions were vague and missing detail. Jet pipe was too long, easy enough to cut out a section. Nose cone has no wedge shaped splitter, either FOD guard it or use AM. However there are some very good bits in regards to the kit, the wing fit was exceptional. Huge selection of stores and a plethora of potential options for users both in the kit decals and aftermarket. Aftermarket used: Eduard Interior 49829 Eduard Brassin B-8M1 Rocket pods and pylons 648 041 CWS nose cone Wolfpack resin seat Master Pitot (very, very fragile) and Model Maker decals and stencils (really thin and lots of stencils, instructions got a bit vague with the high numbered stencil identification but they are reccomended) Paints were Gunze with levelling thinners, oils used for cockpit, seat details, wash and weathering. I have been informed since taking the pictures that the dorsal spine blade aerial has been updated, so that's a minor job for later this week to scratch and correct.

  12. Kovozávody Prostějov is to re-re-release in 2017, in its Premium Line, the classic OEZ/Smer 1/48th Su-7BKL and Su-17/-22M4 "Fitter" kits. Of particular interest is a two-seater variant Su-22UM-3K "Fitter-G", based on the OEZ Su-17, but with a new tool fuselage, resin part, PE and masks. 13. Modelsvit 1:72 with Linden Hill decals. Although a 'short-run' model, one of the better models I have ever built - its details surpass those of 1:48 offerings, yet it builds really nice due to clever design.
  14. This beauty arrived yesterday and with the best of intentions I want to finish another swing-winger first (Revell's 1/48 Tornado), but I know what I'm like and there's every chance I'll cave and start this sooner. I've always wanted to build an Su-17/22 so when the KH CAD shot appeared last year it was merely a waiting game! Im surprised there hasn't already been one started here, and the kits come in for quite a bit of stick online (so did Revell's Tornado mind you and mines been a pleasure so far!) so I'm looking forward to seeing if this really is that bad. The he box and content is certainly impressive so far, will post a few more pics tomorrow. Eng

  17. Got to the stage where I need to decide what to hang under the inboard wing pylons of my Su-17 Fitter G. Instructions suggest that the 'drainpipes with fins at the end' are some sort of AAM but don't look like much like AA-2 (unless I squint and pretend that they've shrunk in the wash and lost the front fins), given early Atolls were very much 'inspired by' Sidewinder I'm thinking some early AIM-9s wouldn't look too out of place - reasonable modelling workaround or utter sacrilege ?
  18. 1/48 swing-wing Fitter could be next Avantgarde release after the Foxhound, Tomcat and Albatros. Unconfirmed speculation at local modelling discusions but here are some connections between the AMK and Czech modellers.
  19. Some of the original OEZ/Kovozávody Prostějov's (KP) classics Sukhoi 1/48th kits were becoming difficult to find. 20. Build 9 Su-22? Sorry Dragon, you got it wrong! Because the markings supplied are only for a Russian Fitter, Su-17M4 is the correct designation, Su-22 is only used for export versions. Now that's cleared up... ;)This looks to be a very nice little kit and I'm looking forward to building it. It'll be built OOB except for the wing/wing glove joint which will need some work. Price: 99p eBay. The decals have yellowed a little and are currently Blu Tacked to my window...
