  1. After finishing the AV-8S the desire for the AV-8B Plus Harrier II increased, so it landed on my bench as my next project. Only kit in 1:72 is the one from Hasegawa, a quite good joice anyway. The only realy weak point is the cockpit. Some goodies from Aires, Quickboost and again decals from Series Españolas will complete this project. This is what Hasegawa gives you for the cockpit, the panel is as plain as the side walls, the instruments are only shown by decals. For comparison, the parts from Aires. So much for the beginning... Daniel
  2. Thanks to a reminder from @JOCKNEY I have started my (first ever?) Heller kit. I think I bought this at a BDAC show a couple of years ago; it was a bargain anyway. It’s the early 109, I’ll do it in the box art scheme. I’ve prepared the parts and done some priming, I’ll post a few pics before long. Cheers Will
  3. Hawker Siddeley (BAe), McDonnell-Douglas/Boeing Harrier AV-8S/TAV-8S & AV-8B/B+/TAV-8B - Monographs #70 (9788366148833) In the Spanish Navy Kagero Publishing via Casemate UK The Harrier began life in the 50s as the Hawker Siddeley Kestrel, which was the proof of concept that led to the Harrier with the collaboration of McDonnel Douglas, working together to create the first GR.1 and AV-8 that was put into service with the RAF and the US Marines respectively, with subsequent upgrades eventually leading to the Harrier II and AV-8B with composite materials, an improved Pegasus engine and avionics, although it is renowned for having one of the highest pilot workloads in aviation, especially during hover. From the 1980s the Spanish Navy began taking on AV-8Bs from McDonnell Douglas’ factories in the US, with a total of 12 forming the day attack squadron and another tranche of the AV-8B+ with the night attack capability, plus a two-seat trainer aircraft that made them self-sufficient in the training of new pilots alongside simulators. The Book This is number 70 in the Monographs 3D edition from Kagero, with English used throughout. It is perfect-bound in a card cover and 138 pages in colour and black & white, and is written by Salvador Mafé Huertas. The book is packed with text interspersed with many pictures and their accompanying captions, mostly in colour, most of which is contemporary and some current. The last 7 pages plus the rear cover are devoted to some general arrangement drawings and a page of handsome side profiles of various airframes, with more on the rear colour. The chapters break down as follows: Acknowledgements The Origins First Generation Harriers in the Spanish Navy Landing at Gibraltar Royal Thai Navy AV-8S and TAV-8S Harriers Novena Escuadrilla, second generation Harriers Upgrading the Legacy Harriers Rover Constant Updates Upgrading the USMC Harriers The Two-Seat TAV-8B Air-to-Air combat with the “Radar” (AV-8B Plus) Air-Air Gunnery Exercise Carrier Pilot Training in Spain Third Plan Green Deck Night Vision Goggles Vertical Landing on Aircraft Carriers Anonymous Professionals: Maintenance of the Harrier Preventative Maintenance Phases Private Industry Commissions and Deployment Spanish Harriers in the Royal International Air Tattoo 2019 The best show in the world General Arrangement Drawings (6 pages) Side Profiles (1 page plus back cover) There is a substantial amount of text in the book which gives a lot of detail on the development, entry into service with its various sub-variants. The photographs are of great interest to anyone with a historical bent, and coupled with the captions there will be plenty of reading time after which you'll be a bit of an instant expert on the type in Spanish service, and ready to build some lesser seen Harriers. There are even a few pages devoted to the performance of the Spanish Harriers at RIAT in 2019, which will have been an absolute treat for the British contingent in the audience, who have been starved of Harrier displays for a long time now. Conclusion There has been a lot written on the subject of the Harrier, but perhaps not that much on the aircraft’s Spanish service, which this book does much to rectify. It is full to the brim of excellent photos, informative captions and text that will provide hours of entertainment for the reader, then serve as reference material for your builds. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  4. I-16 Type 10 Spanish Republic Air Force ICM 1:32 (D3202) ICM have been doing many versions of the I-16 in 1.32 scale now they are bringing us a decal sheet for those used by The Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. The sheet provides markings for 8 aircraft used in 1938 & 1939. Conclusion This is a great addition from ICM to an already great kit. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  5. Spain in Arms - A military history of the Spanish Civil War 1936-39 ISBN : 9781612006376 Casemate UK The Spanish Civil war was fought between 1936 and 1939. This was fought between the Republican side loyal to the Second Spanish Republic, and the Nationalists. Even though the war ended in 1939 it left a legacy in Spain which is felt even to this day. Much has been written about the war however this book looks at it from eight major conflicts. The author has obtained and studied texts from German, Italian and Russian sources, as well as previously secret British intelligence intercepts about Italian air operations, and in addition British and French Archives. As well as the history of the conflict itself the book aims to place this conflict within the historical context of both WWI and WWII. Of interest is the look at the extent of foreign intervention and how it may have been exaggerated in history. The book is A5 hardcover in format and 212 pages long, It is has 20 maps and 20 black and white photos. Conclusion The history for this bloody conflict is examined through eight major campaigns and it aims to dispel many of the half truths stemming from propaganda which still exist from this conflict. As the culmination of 60 years research the book shows this in its quality and depth. Highly Recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  6. Chaps, Excellent photography database, with a focus on Spanish subjects. As an example, beautifully weathered F-18s ! http://www.aviationcorner.net http://www.aviationcorner.net/show_photo_en.asp?id=422174 http://www.aviationcorner.net/show_photo_en.asp?id=227515 http://www.aviationcorner.net/show_photo_en.asp?id=464798 http://www.aviationcorner.net/show_photo_en.asp?id=464289 Cheers,
  7. This is the 1/72 Azur short run release of the Cierva C.30 Autogiro. A curious looking aircraft which is unlikely to have seen use during the war, there were a few in the Spanish Air force before the war broke out but their fate is unknown. The kit is what you would expect from Azur and didn’t cause any problems, it is best to take your time around the under carriage at the front as its very delicate, I also had a slight issue with the rotor blades as the resin part in the middle was damaged, I replaced those parts with stiff wire. I finished the model in Mr Metal aluminium buff-able metallizer, with details painted in Tamiya acrylics. I used the kit decals but I think the markings are fictitious.
  8. Hello Here is the first of my couple of Northrop Delta. This one is the Delta 1C, c/n 7, EC-AGC from the Spanish Postal Airline (LAPE - Líneas Aéreas Postales Españolas ) in 1938. The work in progress is here : The TWA Delta 1A will follow soon. Patrick
  9. Kit - Hobbyboss 1:35 Paint - All Tamiya acrylics. Decals - Revell Extras - None. Just a hair over three weeks start-to-finish, a cheap and excellent cure for loss of 'modelling mojo' also know as AMS - Advanced Modellers Syndrome. Yes the details are soft, the wheels are at best 'round' and the one-piece tracks are a little toy-like, but it went together quickly with the minimum of fuss and I really wanted my own Leopard tank in the cabinet. Thouroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and in the end, is that not the point of this hobby ?? - As ever thanks for taking the time to look, all comments, questions and criticism welcome. Ian.
  10. Dear Readers, In preparation for my Cold War ASW 212 build, I have been looking for the inside cabine pictures/drawings of this helicopter. Especially the seating and equipment arrangement that would have been installed on anti-submarine missions Have found absolutely nothing. Is there anybody around who has some detailed information regarding this "Secret" anti-submarine helicopter from the Peruvian/Italian/Greece/Turkey's Navy. Any info is welcomed. Highest Regards, Dirk
