On July 9th, 1943 Allied transports took off from Tunisia with 144 assault gliders in tow in the opening move of Operation Husky, the invasion Sicily. The assault gliders, 136 Waco CG-4/Hadrians and 8 Horsas, were to deliver 2075 troops of the British 1st Airlanding Brigade in a daring night time assault to secure the Ponte Grande Bridge. The story of the assault can be seen here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Ladbroke but the 1st Airlanding Brigade would run afoul of bad weather, friendly fire, poor nighttime navigation and a lack of communication between the gliders and their tugs. Released at the wrong point, 65 of the assault gliders failed to make landfall and ditched in the nighttime sea. The remaining gliders were scattered, and only a dozen gliders hit the landing zone. Of the remaining gliders only 59 more reached Sicily but some missed the LZ by as much as 25 miles. Regardless, the 1st Airlanding Brigade was able to take the bridge (with a force totaling only 87 men) and hold it until they ran out of ammunition. The Italian forces then retook the bridge but they where unable to demolish the bridge because the 1st Airlanding Brigade had removed the demolition charged the Italians had rigged on the bridge. In a small tribute to the brave men of the 1st Airlanding Brigade I will build the 1/72 Revell Waco CG-4/Hadrian in the markings of the craft used in Operation Ladbroke. (Which, oddly, are USAAF markings as the Waco gliders were "loaned" to the British for this operation) The kit it self is an older Revell offering (does anyone know the release date?), very basic interior but some nice "fabric" work covering the wings and fuselage. The first step is to glue in some flat stock along some of the edges of the fuselage halves to avoid the thin butt joints that the kit has. I hope that you will enjoy the build. Greg in OK

Hello I am searching infos about the Fulmar mk. I (N4004) of 800X Squadron, shot down by Italian anti-aircraft fire, off Siracusa (Sicily) on the night of October, 8, 1941. The wreck lies on a sandy bottom at about 15 meters depth. I would like to build this aircraft in 1/72 and I need info mainly regarding camouflage pattern and individual code. Thank you for your help Domenico

So as promised I am joining this GB! I can't stand ideally by while everyone builds an 88, especially as most are building the same kit I have! So you guessed it.... tonight Matthew, I will start building.... the 1/72 revell ju88 a4. (Actually I started building it last night....) So the kit! Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Box art you all know and love Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr And the scheme I would like to do... I did have to put some real thought into this choice, I am currently re reading Roald's going solo (he would have been 100 this year) with the kids and thought of doing the Greek option, however the the sicily option won out as a) I will be doing the chaps that fired at it in the MTO GB b ) the Greek scheme is to late for when Roald was in Greece c) I prefer it d) did I mention it had a link to malta and I pretty much love anything to do with the place and e) it operated not far from where me and the wife had our honeymoon... rude not to Untitled by robert mulvey, on Flickr Last night I opened the box to take pictures and had the overwhelming urge to start something on it. I, for reasons completely unknown to me, started and completed masking the glazing by hand with tamiya tape..... half way through I regretted this, it was about the time the blade went straight through the tape, glazing and into my finger. Looking at it, it will be covered by paint once painted so hopefully I will get away with it 😕 Stix is having and influence on me, I have prepped parts before I need them and then sealed them away for safe keeping!! Does this mean my models will look like his now.... Anyway, there may not be much progress on this as the cockpit scares me and I want to move ahead with my hellcat (and tiny buffalo mate) so I can focus on this. Cheers for dropping by Rob

My Vintage Malta- collection is crying for a reason to build a Frog Do-17Z. As far as I know the Germans didn´t use them anymore as bombers in the Mediterranean. But, I wonder if anyone can point we towards information of one used as weather reconnaissance or liaison aircraft by Luftwaffe units in Sicily, and by which unit? One aircraft is enough!
