The Finnish airline Kar-Air operated two DC-6B’s in the 1960 and 70’s. The other one of them, reg. OH-KDA underwent a conversion in 1968 by which the rear fuselage was cut and hinged to be turned to the starboard side. (hence the plane’s extra marking ST=Swing Tail). The conversion made it able for the airline to use the DC-6 as a cargo plane, as well. Of all the DC-6B’s built only two planes were converted in this way. I built my model from a 1/144 scale Minicraft kit which in all honesty was very simple and not very detailed. According to the Scalemates pages the kit has its origings in the year 1997. The plastic was kind o' soft, the parts needed quite a lot of sanding and putty and there was some flash in the smaller parts, as well. As to the decals I finally found them from a Californian manufacturer, Pointerdog7. I had always wanted to build the swing tail DC-6B of Kar-Air. A fellow modeller gave me the hint that Pointerdog7 make the Kar-Air decals. Firstly, the model needed quite a lot of ballast in the nose to prevent it from being a tail sitter. After assembling the model I primed it Mr. Surfacer 1000. Then I painted the white areas with Tamiya Fine surface primer which I afterwards sprayed with Tamiya rattle can clear gloss. As to the metal areas, I first sprayed them with Tamiya rattle can gloss black which I then airbrushed with Alclad aluminium. For the smoke trails in the wings and engines I used black pastel chalk. ...that next to the engines, that is! Hi chaps, I was just browsing through Pointerdog7's decal list and from doing a bit of on-line research I got to discover this picture: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Uganda_Airlines_Boeing_707_Groves-1.jpg Can anyone please tell me what that pod hanging near the wing to fuselage join is? Was there another example hanging on the opposite side? Any detail pictures of it anywhere? I was pondering about what livery to use on my first 707 and this looks kind of interesting. I also noticed that there were at least two slightly different liveries worn by Uganda Airlines 707s: the one pictured above and this: Is the livery as shown by the Pointerdog decals the second (final) one? Any idea what year the font and tail design got changed? Thank you! Cheers, Niki
