  1. I've been on a hunt for primers and varnishes to use with my Vallejo paints. I don't normally prime or clean my models before I paint them, and just started to use varnishes on a few of my models. However, I just switched from using Testor's enamels in my airbrush to Vallejo's model air. I don't want my paints to react with anything I do end up getting. As far as primers go, I can't seem to find something that is just an overall good primer. It seems that Vallejo brand primers get a really bad rap and don't "adhere to the plastic, just create a film on top of it". Throughout the research I've done, Stynylrez primers seem to be a favorite. I'm also considering Mr. Surfacer 1200. Is it worth mixing brands or do Vallejo primers work well enough? And is there a certain color I should get? And for Varnishes, my paint set came with a couple of varnishes- Gloss, satin, Matte. I did use the gloss but it seems to have not done mush with the surface of the airplane after about 3-5 coats. With this, I'm not sure if I was doing something or it was the varnish its self. I'd like to get some GX100 since it seems to be a great clear coat from what I read. Any ideas of what I should do or past experiences you can share? - Joanna
  2. As I'm in a gap between building models, I decided to check all of my paints (Revell, Humbrol, Tamiya, Aqueos Gunze, A-Mig, Vallejo and Life Colour), to see which were starting to thicken up and therefore have to thin down (or replace). The A-Mig & Vallejo are fine and I do have thinners for Revell/Humbrol enamel, Tamiya, Aqueous Gunze and LP paints, so no problem. The Life Colour paints I purchased along with the 1/700 IBG boats and have really only used the Hull Red and White since (cannot find a comparison in other makes for the others). The rest of the paints are starting to thicken up a bit. I can't find any Life Colour thinners as such. Is there a thinners for Life Colour paints or I can I just use water? Thanks in advance.
  3. Does anyone have the suggested paint list for this model? The retailers sent me a paint list for another kit which I was interested in by the same manufacturer but not this. I'm assuming that the paints are Aqueous Gunze (MrHobby/MrColor), but I'm not concerned if the paints are in Ammo-Mig, Vallejo, etc., as I have conversion charts for most of them. I usually use Scalemates, but as far as I can tell, the kit is not listed on their website. Thanks in advance.
  4. What do the letter codes mean? My nephew has a old model kit from his great uncle and he wants to know what the letters mean for which paint colours. The kit was made in 1983 apparently and.... WOW!!! It tells you how to assemble it but barely. There are no numbers and there is no chart telling what paints to use just letters.
  5. There are many times at exhibitions where we've heard people say that they love our products but they don't have a workshop. Well, we're now working on a range of travel cases. It's early days but we thought you'd like to see what we're working on and feel free to chip in with thoughts and ideas. The initial thoughts are to produce cases based around A3 and A4 cutting mats, i.e. the removable front will be sized so that it can support a mat. The interiors of the cases will be customisable to cater for the different paint mixes people use and personal requirements. Drawers will be available to store the paints as per the existing range and also in plain format. Cases will have a carry handle. No decision has been made on the material yet, either MDF or plywood. Ply is lighter but more expensive and crucially not usually flat unless braced. MDF weighs a bit more, isn't as strong but is normally flat, or at least the wood we've been getting is. Here's an early build of an A3 sized case. Whilst the frontal area is just over A3 size, the depth is around 185mm.
  6. I about to purchase the FlyHawk 1109S Flyhawk Hms Penelope 1940 1:700 Deluxe Edition, Can anyone tell me or point me in the right direction where I can find the assembly manual for this build please. I'm looking to find the paint colours or codes required for this model. I'd rather buy any required paints (if I don't already have them) at the same time as buying the kit. Thanks
  7. Hello, after many years of not building a Model Aircraft kit I decided to buy one. Its a Revell Yak - 3 1:72 Level 3 kit. My question is the box says 10 tins of paint but the instructions say 12. Which is correct and also where is the cheapest place to but it? Thank You
  8. Dear Colleagues: does anyone have a good acrylic recommendation for BS.633, the blue-grey used at different times on RAF ground vehicles? Alas, Xtracrylic does not appear to make an acrylic version of its enamel X013. Is there a good combination of Vallejo that might work? They seem to have something that looks like it could be a starter: blue grey 71.115. Thanks! Alex T.
  9. We now have the full range of Tamiya's Lacquer paints in stock and ready to ship! They come in a 10ml bottle and are suitable to paint plastic model kits and come in three finishes, gloss, flat and translucent. The Tamiya Lacquer Paint range can be brushed straight from the tub over small areas, or thinned to be used in an airbrush. Tamiya's lacquer paints feature a quick drying time, robust finish and can be over painted with either acrylic or enamel paints once dry. These paints also do not require the use of a primer and even the gloss colors can be applied directly to the plastic parts. Due to the nature of lacquer paint they should only be used outdoors or in a well ventilated area. Eye protection, gloves and a vapor mask should be worn at all times when using lacquer paints. See the full range here; https://www.wonderlandmodels.com/model-paints/paints-glues/tamiya/lacquer/
  10. After several attempts at locating information that I need, I determined that maybe this has never been done before and should possible have it's own forum partition. I will get to the skinny of my request. Basically, what should a beginning modeller have in their workstation if starting from scratch, before they ever open their first kit and begin building? I.e. For modern warplanes, a beginner should have airbrush, compressor, a list of paint codes to have for, say US Navy aircraft, as well as paints that are used for non-FS painting, but will be used often. Basically the list of all paints a modeller should have in their everyday colors, then the paints for specific color call-outs. This is in military terms, a PCI (pre-combat inspection). Make surs you got the right gear before you go out and pick a fight, I hope to acheive the same for beginners like me. Hand brushes, sandpaper (what level of grit) puddy (type and why) exacto knife with different blade shapes and their uses, panel line tool, weathering effects and washes, decal solutions, thinners field both enamel and acrylics, paint tent/box, ventilation. Anyway, I am new (again, after a 30 year layoff) to modelling, and things have changed a lot, mostly the quality has gone up I hope, and the aftermarket has exploded for upgrades and conversions. Having a workstation with the basic tools and paints to begin, is itself stressful. I would hate to start a kit, only to find out that I need a certain tool or paint or whatever, and all progress halts until the missing aspect arrives. This could be added to each group of modellers with a list of the basic paints used on almost all kits of that genre, and an explanation of how to determine the specific paints required. This could be fun for the more experienced modellers, see who has the best list, make a contest out of it. Mostly though, I really need to know that I have at least the minimum tools and paints/glues/overcosts required to begin my first build. Hope to hear from you all soon and thanks in advance, sincerely, Stalker6recon
  11. I am making a 1:72 Lanc' and Halifax, one in gloss, one in matt, one in gloss and can't decide which looks better, I wonder what types of paints people us here.
  12. Hi, I can see this topic comes up from time to time and it looks like the best option is Ushabti Bone as the primary layer and NYC Mulberry Street 221b as the top layer... except looks like 221b has been out of production some time and I cannot find it on ebay or amazon. Next option seems to be Halfords Ford Champagne Gold but I cannot find it in the US or on the ebay/amazon. Other option would be using Revell paints except I cannot find the local and getting it from ebay would cost as few bottles of Tamiya or Mr. Color. With all this in mind is there any other good option to getting the body color using Model Master/Testors, Tamiya, Mr Color, Citadel or some other paints/nail varnish? PS: I have an idea of trying to have the same mix as Revell suggests except using Mr Color paints but I am out of Clear Orange so it'll be few weeks till it arrive :(
  13. Hello everyone, is there a good reference for some of the Warsaw pact air forces camo schemes to western references? For example I know there the excellent range of colors put out by AKAN and I have few of those paints but they can be a bit tedious to get here in the U.S. as they are email order only and I hate to spend twice the amount of money on shipping for one or two bottles of paint and usually the color I need is OOS when I need it. I know that Eduard lists Gunze colors with their MiG series of kits but how accurate are they? Unfortunately Gunze paints are getting scare here as well. So if any one know of a table or some other type of reference I would be most appreciative.

    Where to start...

Hi everyone, My first question and my first real post besides my intro post. As a new modeler I have a question about paints: How do you guys go about your paint buying/collecting. I've tried searching but cant really find any discussions or solid info about this on the web. Do you buy paints per kit or do you buy a handful of paints and only purchase that missing specific/exterior paints? Things like the various greys / greens /blacks, both matt, satin, and glosses. The various metals etc. Is there a list of common colors that are good to get for a starting modeler? My LHS went out of business last year so i have to order online. If i'm missing a paint it means i cant continue for a couple of days :/ I still have some 10 year old Testor paints, but i think those are lacquers and mostly gloss. I don't think i will used those very much and don't really feel like dealing with Lacquers anymore... 2 years ago I took an interest in miniature painting (battletech to be precise) and ordered a starter set acrylic paints from The army painter . I've been using these so far and they seem fine. I definitely enjoy painting with acrylics a lot more! I've since ordered 2 Vallejo paints (the 2 main exterior colors for the dutch navy helicopters) but im interested in Ammo by Mig(both are the same price) and some Hataka paints as well(they have some nice paint sets and the paints seems to be true to real life). I'm building my firsts real model now (a revell UH1) which came with some revell paints (i think the Aqua series, but seem to be Lacquer based by smell) but i'm missing a lot of paints, hence the question on where to start. I've managed to mix some of the included grey with some black and white from the army painter set (yea... mixing water based with lacquer based... i wanted to continue!) to match reference pictures but i'm at a point that i need to buy some more colors or spent half my day mixing paints wasting alot of paint. I'm keen to hear your thoughts on this
  15. Hey guys, I am very very new to this site. I am an American veteran, now living in the Philippines. I have had an extremely hard time finding the paints and tools that I need to reenter model building, after a VERY LONG gap. My last build was in the very early 1990's, and I am hoping to get back into the game, so to speak. As I said, living here is not the best place if you need to find paints, tools and kits. I have resorted to using Ebay for most of my buys so far, and it just so happened that I sent a question to a seller located in Hong Kong, with more than 12,000 feedbacks. I was asking about a 1/48 scale V-22 that I want to add to my kits. He was able to send me to his website, which offers lower shipping costs than ebay. When I went to his store, which is NOT very well constructed for a website, but you can find a lot of items from different brands, at what seems to be extremely good prices. As an example, a Tamiya 87086 weathering stick, which sells for 4.10 dollars on Amazon (US), is only 2.30 cents on his store. Nearly half the price. The same goes for the paints, all of them seem to be at half the prices found on ebay/amazon, and he has different brands, some I know, others I have never heard of. The guys on here that can create military aircraft that just need an engine, and they would fly, probably have experience with the other brands available there. I am making this post, just because I am so happy to find a place that has a lot of what I believe I need, and at MUCH better prices than I have found in the Philippines. I am on a fixed, limited income, so money means a lot. When buying one bottle of paint, a few dollars doesn't mean much. But when you plan to fill up on FS colors or their equivalent, needing to buy a few dozen, every dollar saved, really counts. He also has a lot of tools as well, saws, sand paper etc, and at what appears to be some of the best pricing I have ever seen. Sorry if this post is inappropriate, I don't really know the rules, and I was so excited that I thought I would share this with my new friends and mentors, that have the same passion that I do, but probably a LOT more skill. I am doing reading and watching videos, trying to consume as much information/tips, as I can get. I hope that I too, can create the "it would fly" look that so many of your are able to do, probably with ease. I did post on my profile, a bit of information about myself, and requested and tricks/tips that you have, if you have the time. I would greatly appreciate it. Anyway, here are the links that got me to his page, let me know if these is indeed a good price as compared buying locally in your area. I know that it is HUGE savings in my area, which is more than double, even triple the prices that are offered on this site. Anyway, this is where I started on ebay, https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tamiya-25163-1-48-v-22-oaprey-with-jp-marking/271350442464?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908131621%26meid%3D51040936a9cb426480c9d0eb4e9292bd%26pid%3D100678%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D271350442464&_trksid=p2481888.c100678.m3607&_trkparms=pageci%3A99717105-b704-11e7-a283-74dbd1809bac%7Cparentrq%3A433d2e6215f0ab6b48125d9efffcea63%7Ciid%3A1 And this is the link to his store, http://www.wahwahmodelshop.com Anyway, I hope this help others to save a buck or two, or at least to get an idea that there may be deals in your area that can stretch your dollar, peso or pound. Cheers, Stalker6Recon PS. I tried to add a photo of the item/price from a screen grab, but I can not add photos, not sure why.
  16. I'm currently building a few 1:350 scale ships; two plastic kits and two scratchbuilds, and could do with some expert advice on which Acrylics to use when I get to the painting phase. I currently use Vallejo but they are mainly produced for aircraft and AFV colour ranges. From your experience, what are your recommendations; by brand name and part numbers, for modern RN and RFA vessels? cheers Mike
  17. Hey, I am a new guy in modelling and I´m asking myself for a long time some questions. 1. I am searching for a shop selling Xtracolor paints, I checked Hannants, Aviation Mega Store, Martola and Falsh-aviation. 2. 20. Finished today the nice Airfix Seafire F.XVII, completely OOB. I decided to build this to try the Agama Alcohol based paints - specifically the EDSG, DSG and Interiour Grey-Green. These paints behave nicely when thinned with IPA or Mr Levelling thinner, close to Gunze to spray, and has the advantage that Agama do colours that gunze dont :-). Unfortunately at the moment you can only buy them direct from Agama but hopefully that will change. The paints: And the finished Peter
  21. I finally want to try Mr Surfacer, often recommended by many people as a great product. I tried Hiroboy first, but they are out of stock. Yesterday I called into the Plymouth branch of Antics, and the first assistant I spoke to hadn't even heard of Gunze Sangyo or the "Mr" range of paint products... I go there very occasionally for a browse but I have to say they are usually very disappointing, and their prices aren't much cop either... Can anyone recommend a source for Mr Surfacer? Is the Tamiya aerosol similar product as good, or at least worth trying? Thanks, Tony
  22. For those of you who have been following my topic on Douglas Bader's Spitfire, you will already know that I recently bought the Airfix 1/48 model. Having now satisfied myself that more research is complete for the project begin, I suddenly realised that I had absolutely no idea of what to do with the paints included. I know that they are acrylic, also the box says? However, how do you use them in the airbrush? Should they be diluted with a reducer. If so, what reducer? I normally use Tamiya paints and thinners. When I bought the model and went over to the pain stand to grab a few bottles of Tamiya paint, my wife stood glaring at me, saying "TThere is paint in the box". I tried to convince so that this was a bigger model and that they would not be enough paint. The helpful shop assistant to took her aside and said that I would have more than enough paint if I was using a airbrush. I am not convinced!!! So, If any of you wise folk have any sage words I'd like to hear them. 1. Will I have enough paint 2. do I need to thin the paint 3. if so, what thinners do I use 4. should I just toss the Airfix paint and go and buy the corresponding tamiy colours?
