  4. VPAF Shengyang J-6 (MiG-19S 'Farmer-C'), '6066', 925st FR, Noi Bai, 1974 Shengyang J-6 was the Chinese license built version of the MiG-19S 'Farmer-C'. Even if MiG-19 was the first supersonic fighter to go into mass production - it is overshadowed by it's predecessor and replacement. One reason is because it had quite short life span, just filling the gap between MiG-17 to MiG-21. Even if it had better performance than it's US counterparts - for example MiG-19 had superior rate of climb when compared to F-100 Super Sabre - the type was plagued with all kinds of technical problems, engine issues and design 'features' that made it somewhat dangerous to fly in inexperienced hands. Many of those flaws being caused by the hurry to get the plane type into production. '6066' is one of the 24 Shenyang J-6's that the Chinese provided as combat attrition replacement in 1974. - - - - - - Kit: KP Shenyang F-6C 'Farmer-C' "late" (#KPM0160) Scale: 1/72 Aftermarket: Master pitot tubes & guns, Pavla resin seat and Print Scale decals Paints: Vallejo acrylics Weathering: Flory Models Wash, Mig & Tamiya weathering products Newly tooled MiG-19 from KP is good all-around kit and probably the best kit choice for this subject in this scale. Built for Vietnam GB. Build thread:
  5. VPAF MiG's, Part 4: MiG-19S 'Farmer-C' (KP 1:72) Shengyang J-6 (MiG-19S 'Farmer-C'), '6066', 925st FR, Noi Bai, 1974 Shengyang J-6 was the Chinese license built version of the MiG-19S 'Farmer-C'. The kit, newly tooled KP Shenyang F-6C 'Farmer-C' "late". Back of the box, not that we're using these with this build. Which is kinda shame, looking for a GB that gives me an excuse to build Pakistani jets (*hint* *hint*). What's in the box - plus some aftermarket stuff. Like I said, this is a newly tooled kit. And while not quite up to par with the big names - it's a good looking kit and MiG-19 is something that has been neglected for quite a long time. Great thing is that KP is releasing even more MiG-19 goodness soon. Aftermarket stuff - Pavla seat, Master gun barrels and Print Scale Decals. This is what Print Scale offers as a scheme - and it's definitely not a bad one. But... ... when I saw this, I had to choose it. It's even got the same number - so it's simply meant to be! But as can be seen, Print Scale VPAF insignia are way off, looking at the pics, the bars are slightly chunkier than 'normally' (US etc.) - but what Print Scale offers is very thin and wide bars. I'm thinking of cutting them down and see if they look any better. The scheme on the plane is quite non-typical - as it is Chinese scheme that was left on the plane as it was taken into service. BTW is anyone familiar with Chinese J-6's? I'm guessing getting any color codes for these is a long shot - but for example the underside, is it gray or metal? Also any pics where the scheme can be seen (on the wings etc.) would be highly appreciated - my Google skills are failing me... My other MiG's: VPAF MiG's, Part 1: MiG-17 'Fresco-A' (Zvezda 1:72) VPAF MiG's, Part 2: MiG-17PF 'Fresco-D' (AZ Model 1:72) VPAF MiG's, Part 3: MiG-21PFL 'Fishbed-D' (Eduard 1:72) VPAF MiG's, Part 5: MiG-21F-13 'Fishbed-C' (Modelsvit 1:72)
  6. What is the best MiG-19 kit in 1/72nd scale? I know of the old Heller and KP kits, and Mastercraft do one. Are there any others? I'm specifically looking for the cannon-armed version, as opposed to the missiles-only version. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Best Regards, Jason P.S. This is an aeroplane that cries out for a new-mould kit. Airfix? Zvezda? Anyone?
  7. Dear BMers, I picked up the old KP 1/72 MiG-19 (Nr.4) last year, and recently bought some Print Scale decals to replace the old ones in the box. The problem I have is that I don't know which mark of MiG-19 it is. Can I use the kit to represent the Chinese J6 or Pakistani F6? Or an East German one? Or the Indonesian one on the decal sheet? It is a relatively simple kit, but I'd really like to use the DDR markings for variety. Any advice welcome (except to junk the kit, I love old kits). DennisTheBear
  8. I would like to introduce to you my last finished model. MIG-19S Syrian Air Force. Here are pictures, enjoy.
  9. I picked up a Russian make MiG-19 kit from E-bay figuring that it would be a reboxing of some tired old mold. However when I checked the sprue I could not find a mold that matched the kit. So I appear to have a bit of a mystery on my hands. Does anyone know who made this 1/72 scale MiG-19? Greg in Oklahoma
  10. The is the “Mistercraft” MiG-19S, which I think is a copy of the old KP kit albeit with recessed rather than raised panel lines and moulded in a strange soapy plastic. I built this partly because I think the MiG-19 is a classic Cold War design but also because I wanted to try out some of the new(ish) Vallejo metal colours before trying them out on something less "disposable". That said, I couldn't stop myself from adding Extratech details (designed for the Bilek kits but some elements are useful), a Pavla cockpit, and the Master air data probe & gun barrels (beautiful pieces of casting). The overall shape of the Mistercraft/KP kit isn’t bad but the following are some of the adjustments I made to try to get it a little closer: · Reduce thickness of all trailing edges and wing fences · Add jet pipes and reshape the ‘pen nib’ fairing · Delete forward small intake from the fin · Add gun blast squares · Open up the nose intake and build up the internal structure · Reduce the span of the tailplanes by about 2.5 mm each side · Drill out and glaze the landing light · Fill the side airbrakes and replace · Build up the profile of the nose intake to reduce the prominence of the gun camera · Extend and re-shape the rear fillet of the wing root · Reprofile the spine at the rear of the cockpit · Reduce the chord of the fin leading edge · Lengthen the fuel tank pylons · Replace/rebuild the mainwheels with 9mm diameter substitutes (the hubs are scratchbuilt and still not perfect, but better) · Add an additional member to each main landing gear · Rebuild the nose landing gear (6mm diameter wheel) – mine includes elements from a F-8 Crusader plus Albion Alloy tubing · Plus an awful lot of fill-sand-shape repeat! The kit decals were out of register so the markings are from the spares box (Bilek MiG-19PM for the Czech national markings and KP MiG-21MF for some of the numbers). By the way, one thing to watch is that the kit has the long fin fillet, so is not suitable for the early batch Czech MiG-19s (S-105s) with serials in the 01xx and 02xx series. There is most definitely a need for a decent MiG-19/J-6 in 1/72 scale (I bear the scars of having previously fought the Bilek MiG-19PM into submission) but I was pretty pleased with how the Vallejo metallics worked out; by the way, there is more lustre and contrast between the panels than the photos bring out.
  11. This thread deals with the MiG aircraft. For the Shenyang J-6 Farmer please see our separate thread here. MiG-19PM, Pics thanks to Mike Cosello, taken at the Polish Aviation Museum, Krakow.
  12. So i have narrowed the contenders down to: -A "spotty" MiG-17F no. 2072 using the Hobby Boss kit. or -A "patchy" Shenyang J-6 no. 6065 6066 using the Trumpeter kit. BTW i'm using this decal sheet: http://www.lds.airplanephoto.net/decals/12-lds-48007/index.htm but i still need to decide which one to build..........
