  1. This will probably take a bit of time, not just as it is resin, white metal and vac form canopies but the colour scheme of Aluminium over black/yellow target tug stripes as well as trainer bands, make it a bit of a challenge. And it is an relatively early Magna kit so I predict a fair amount of sanding and filler in the coming months. The Sturgeon was initially destined as an anti submarine aircraft but as the war finished it wasn't really needed. However post war the FAA needed a modern high speed target tug and the Sturgeon was redesigned to meet this need. It was carrier compatible and could land and take off at sea although the squadrons were shore based. It served the Navy well from 1950 to 1956. The Magna kit is a bundle of fairly well moulded resin parts with a bit of flash and some pretty big pour stubs. The shape looks reasonably good and the panel lines nicely restrained. A bundle of white metal metal parts for prop blades, undercarriage and some interior parts. They will need careful cleaning up but my experience of Magna kits is the white metal usually cleans up well. Detailed instructions and a number of options to build. Though apart from the natural metal prototype the scheme are all the same. There are no transfers but I think I should have enough in the stash. There's nothing fancy just roundels, serials and Royal Navy titles.
  2. Now here's a challenge first a Magna kit, and secondly yellow and black stripes underneath. The Sturgeon started as an anti submarine aircraft but became a sturdy land and carrier based target tug. A fairly substantial machine and served the Navy for a number of years in the 40s and 50s. A little bit about the aircraft later but here's the kit. The main parts are in Magna's familiar cream resin with fairly large chunky mould gates. But fairly well moulded and a basis, like most Magna machines, for a decent looking model. The smaller and detail parts are in white white metal and although they're in there there's a lot of filing to be done to get them into reasonable condition. Four pages of information and instructions which although more than a bit 'old school' are comprehensive and helpful. The transparencies are vac formed with the fuselage windows on a piece of acetate sheet. There's doubles of them all for the cack handed like me but unfortunately the main canopy has yellowed somewhat. I'll have a ponder along the way but it looks not unlike a Firefly canopy and there may be something in the stash. There aren't any transfers but good plans for a number of TT2s and a TT3. I should be able to find something in the transfer stash by I'll have to be careful about badges, etc..
  3. During the recent Trainer Group Build here on BM, I decided to build my Magna Hawker Henley. This is only the second Resin kit I have every built, but if you want to build a Henley, you only have this one or the Formaplane vacform. This is the Work in Progress Please let me know what you think cheers Pat
  4. I’ll have a crack at this With some 310 Squadron markings
  5. This is my Hawker Henley, I originally started a Formaplane Vacform version, then was gifted the Magna Resin one instead, this is the ideal chance to build it. Good luck everyone ! cheers Pat
  6. Despite being old enough to know better, having recently found this kit again after I mislaid it, it seemed only right that I build it during this iconic GB. This GB will no doubt be awash with other Hawker Henleys, so I'm afraid it just shows a distinct lack of imagination on my part. I haven't built a Formaplane vacform before, so this will be a first. Also I have an old Airfix Hurricane which I plan to use for parts to supplement the vacform parts. Fortunately the kit comes with scaled plans, so I can immediately see whether a part is suitable or not. Heres the kit, which compared to a Rareplanes Supermarine 224 I built a while ago looks a bit more agricultural. However let's see how it goes. All tips, encouragement and Micky taking greatly appreciated cheers Pat Edit : As you will see from the thread below, I had originally intended building the Formaplane vacform version but will now be building the Magna resin version instead ! I have only ever built one resin kit before and never used metal parts so lots to learn ! cheers Pat
  7. The new museum at Filton, the home of the Bristol Aircraft Company are repatriating a Freighter from NZ shortly, which in my world is great news. To celebrate I have taken my Superfreighter from the stashlet and decided to make it as a Mark 31 using the Magna resin conversion kit. So without further ado.....the boxes. A little surgery... Now here's where I need some help, what goes on behind the pilots seat in that big hole? The answer is not freight.. there are I think some racks with equipment on and possibly another seat? I have looked at previous builds, searched the internet, bought the Freighter book etc. but cannot find a nice clear guide. Any one know?
  8. About time I built this as I suggested it to Martyn from Magna and gave him the drawings and photos! It's been waiting it's turn for about 8 years so this is a good opportunity to get it done. I'll have to tidy my desk before starting this.......... Steve
  9. Hi, Just finished the Magna 1/72 Short Sperrin as part of the Non Injected Moulded Group Build More photos in the Group Build Gallery and the build is here. Thanks for looking. Steve
  10. Obscurity Corner! First attempt at a Resin Kit, not as bad as I suspected, all parts fitted quite well but still a fair amount of filling. The model is a Bristol 148, two prototypes were made in response to Air Ministry Spec A39/34 for an army co-operation aircraft. The 148 undertook trials against the Lysander in 1937 and performed well, both met the spec but the Lysander's better visibility and fixed undercarriage won the day. Bristol transferred all efforts into developing the Blenheim, the shape of the tail on the 148 looks familiar!
  11. In the just received July copy of Scale Aviation Modeller International, there's, on p.749, a small Magna Models advertisement and under the title "New 1/48th scale kits for Summer 2011", I read: 1/48th Hunting Percival Sea Prince T.1. - ref.0648 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percival_Prince Quite a delightful piece of news, despite the fact that Magna Models resin kits are for advanced modellers only...
