  1. Evening All, Was debating whether or not to enter this GB as wasn't convinced I'd complete in time, I'm a leisurely modeller, especially at the beginning when its all the fiddly bits I'm not that good at! However, with a deadline into December, I ought to be OK. I got a Revell GR.1 for Christmas a couple of years ago just after they'd gone out of service so this GB was rather timely. I'm doing this pretty much OOB, although undecided on markings at this point. Might stick to the 9 sqn in the kit or go after market for something else. Also unsure about the weapons, but that decision can wait. One question that has occurred to me is the presence of the refuelling probe. I remember reading that the RAFG Tornados didn't do a lot of AAR, given that the baddies were on the doorstep. Did that equate to the IFR not being fitted on the whole? And if that was the case, did it change after Op Granby when their expected operations were a lot more widespread? Obligatory box photo: Lots of bits in here, probably the most complex kit I've built since restarting modelling a couple of years back. A fairly meaty instruction booklet too! And now the usual conundrum - how many pots of paints do I need to buy for the cockpit detailing? I reckon I need 4 or 5 for the cockpit and the exterior metallic bits. Added to the complication is the varied paint brands stocked by my local model shops, struggling to find one place that has all the ones I want. But an online order is going to incur (relatively) hefty postage costs 😞 Need to phone around tomorrow and see who's got what.. And that's it - stuck one of the seats together just to show some progress. Just hope I haven't made painting it a pain now! Al.
  2. Hi All, I don't seem to recall ever posting a W.I.P. on BM, which is very remiss of me, so I thought I'd share my current build - Airfix's 1/48 Tornado GR.1 in the 'Desert Storm' Boxing. It's a kit that doesn't seem to have much of a good reputation. the fit is indeed awful, but so far I've enjoyed it - so much so that I've ordered another GR.1A, a GR.1B, a GR.4 and an F.3... It's been pretty much OOB, with the addition of a PE cockpit, and although I've kept the raised panel lines on this one I have rescribed the missing detail along the seams as I find it's the simplest way of replacing it. On the next build I plan to rescribe the whole lot (and add additional). So that's where I am thus far, I've recently added the guns to the nose and done a bit more filling - Most of this work I'll add, has been done in my car during my lunch breaks. Cheers!
  3. Hello all. It's been an inconceivably long time since my last post. Many things have happened in this time, some good, some not so much. Between it all, some very good friends have been there to whisper words of support and encouragement to me. For this, I am eternally grateful. One of these kindly souls is a serving member of the Royal Air Force, and is also a modeller. He recently found himself in the position of being asked to provide table models for a banquet to mark the RAF's centenary, and very little time in which to accomplish this feat. Cue your's truly to aide in the fight to produce enough models to fulfil the requirement. Rather than bore you with endless photos of build logs, in this instance, I will share a few shots of the finished Tornados. Yes, there are errors and glaring omissions on all the kits, but I have done my level best to provide completed (for the most part, hehehe) subjects. Bearing in mind that I am also differently abled (I detest being referred to as disabled)I think I've done not too shabby a job. Apologies also for the photos... I have been playing with my settings, so some are not quite as good as perhaps they could've been. Without further preamble - I present to you my contribution to the RAF100 celebrations. Please, be gentle Hobby Boss 1:48 Panavia Tornado F.3 Revell 1:48 Panavia Tornado F.3 Revell 1:48 Panavia Tornado GR.4 Revell 1:48 Panavia Tornado GR.1 (from GR.4 kit)
  4. Hi all, Kit manufacture: Airfix Scale: 1/72 Type: Hawker Siddeley Harrier Gr.1 Extras used: Totally OOB Paints and colours used: Mr Hobby Aqueous H330/H331/H332 for the Dark Green, Dark Seagray, Light Aircraft Grey camo. Vallejo Metal Color Magnesium for exhausts, Tamiya and Vallejo acrylics elsewhere. Weathered with Flory Dark Dirt and Grime, and oil paints. All sealed with Aqua Gloss. Long time no see! To be honest with you, I got a bit disheartened by the photoshop thing so have been out of forums for a while. But, I've got a new photo setup and I'm back in! This is one I have just finished for a SiG on another forums. This is my first inflight model and whilst I've never been too into them, I have to say I love how she looks in the air, so will definitely be doing more airborne jets! The kit, other than a few fit issues in the wheel wells that didn't affect this build, is great. Falls together! I think the surface detail looks good and, although slightly overdone for 1/72, is more than acceptable. Here's the pics: That's about it. Thank you for stopping by! As always, comments, criticism and advice is always welcomed! Val
  5. Hi all, I am about to start the Airfix 1/72 Harriers GR.1 and Gr.3. Both have this strenghening plate on the fuselage sides which I can't find on any pictures in my reference books - but then again, this area is almost always in dark shadows. Does anyone know if all Gr.1/3 Harriers had those or only certain aircraft. I am in doubt wether do leave them or to sand them off. picture see below.
  6. I've picked up one of these for £10 and having a quick search I realise I can't do a GR.1 without a lot of work, so can I make one of the 6 delevopement batch a/c prior to the pre-production GR.1s'. The ejection seat in the kit is with the large head box, when did this change from the earlier type. Cockpit colours look like gray. I need to fashion the two vents directly behind the canopy. I've just started to fill in the sink holes and research is ongoing but any info would be greatly received. Steve.
  7. It seems like everyone is building Tonkas on here at the moment, so I didn't want to be left out! Lovely little kit (save the dodgy nose profile...) All OOB, except craft wire AoA probes. This was built to hang from the ceiling at work, so I didn't go all out with aftermarket goodies to tart it up; in all honesty, it's only got about half a sheet of stencils on it that you can't tell are missing, too! 17 sqn scheme is depicted, purely because I couldn't be bothered with masking out a 2 tone wrap camo scheme... maybe next time. I think I got the Tornado bug after building this, so I'll be keeping my eye out for the 1/48 kit for sure, now. C&C welcomed as always. After seeing some of the Tornado posts recently and following Melchie's WIP, I'm under no illusions that this could hold a light up to some of the others on here, but I hope you enjoy nonetheless! Daryl.
  8. I work as a volunteer, at the Helicopter Museum at Weston Super Mare, and I was in for a treat when two lorries turned up late this afternoon transporting the parts of a Harrier GR.1. It is not a normal GR.1 though as it is the one that was used by Rolls Royce as a test bed for supersonic harriers. This aircraft was, until recently, on display at Kemble in Gloucestershire. The aircraft serial is XV798 The harrier is being off-loaded (in the dark and in pouring rain!) to be laid up for a while outside the main hangar. I'll let you know what future plans there are for it when I find out. I'll leave it to the real harrier enthusiasts here to provide descriptions, histories and specifications of those massive forward thrusters! cheers Mike .
